Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Not had the pram problem yet but I have heard it is common once they can crawl - DS has become very spirited lately so can see that one coming!

The worst thing about the nappy changes is even if I hold his legs and hips down he can still turn his torso 180 degrees! So I have to try to hold him down on the chest - not easy when you are using terries. Think I will have to get more birth to potty nappies, they are easier but I don't have enough of them at the moment.

DS was happily immobile on his back playing on his mat until just two weeks ago. Then he learned to roll over and now the front is the place to be. All of a sudden I can't leave him anywhere even for a minute or he'll be on the other side of the room with a biro nearly in his mouth . And, oh yes, the nappy changes...

I can't begin to imagine two of them, Neenz...

katherine2008 · 18/03/2009 20:56

my breakfast refusing dd is six and half months... have been leaving about half an hour between milk and breakfast but will try to leave longer!! have had first projectile vomit tonight woo hoo!!! gave her a taste of a rusk, before we started dinner, imagining that if it was going to come up it would do so straight away. we had just finished pudding when it all came up, and up and up and up, like mount vesuvius!!!! fortunately i hadn't put the towels away from swimming this morning so i wrapped her up, dunked her in water and we started again with low key rice and banana... bless her little heart, she just looked a little surprised. and damp!!! .

giantkatestacks · 19/03/2009 09:22

Neenz - we use Motherease stay dry which go from birth to potty - in fact am using the ones from my ds for my dd so very cost effective...you have to get sized wraps but presumably you've already got them.

Maria2007 · 19/03/2009 09:28

Hey everyone, morning!

Poo is changing here... yesterday DS had beef for the first time, & what changed was the SMELL. Phew! Really really bad. So far we'd only had chicken (loads of different versions of it) & lentils. So now beef is on the menu too, & this week I plan to also introduce fish. But the smell...the smell...

Other than that, we're struggling with sleep issues atm, which is why I've kind of disappeared a bit from this thread (but I do still follow it!)

I'm wanting to start finger foods in a more organized way. Steamed veg is probably a good place to start, and maybe toast as well (I've only tried rice cakes so far). What toast do you use? Just plain white? or brown?

potatoes · 19/03/2009 11:10

Hi Maria, saw your sleep thread, just wanted to say good luck with it all and i hope you get a decent night's sleep soon

neenztwinz · 19/03/2009 15:23

Yeah I like Motherease, just trying to get hold of some cheap. Think I might have found some on the nappy board but waiting to hear back.

Katherine, sounds awful! I leave an hour between milk and breakfast even now (10mo) so maybe a bigger gap will make the difference.

Maria, I find when they have cod their poo just smells of cod! Hope you get somewhere with the sleep. You know I only have one answer to sleep issues so I won't repeat it .

I have been having a problem with sleep too actually. They are sleeping through most of the time but sometimes DD wakes at 2/3am and her room stinks like she has filled her nappy, but she hasn't. So it must be her farts, and I wonder whether something she is eating is not agreeing with her, giving her smelly farts and waking her up (due to discomfort rather than the smell lol!). Someone on my PN thread said salmon could do that, and last time it happened she'd had salmon. The day after she had cod and slept through, but yesterday she had tuna and it happened again. Anyone else had this? I have given her tuna again today to see if it happens again. She wakes and cries for about an hour then goes back to sleep.

mookickkick · 19/03/2009 19:30

Neenz - haven't noticed about the fish, as dd had a cold and was up anyway the last time we had salmon! I do give Infacol just before the last bf.

giantkatestacks · 19/03/2009 19:42

I havent had any fish related windyness either its only the egg that produces that here.

DD ate so much at dinner tonight - bolognaise and rice followed by yoghurt that I thought she was going to explode...

katherine2008 · 19/03/2009 19:46

breakfast report... she took 3.5 floz, we waited nearly an hour and she took one tsp baby rice and two cubes of fruit, which I call a HUGE success!!! So tomorrow, we will try a little porridge again. Think I'll give the chicken a try tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!! Good luck with windy bottoms and sleep tonight all!

potatoes · 19/03/2009 19:47

Neenztwinz can I just say how impressed I am that not only have you BF twins but also cook for them instead of jars AND use cloth nappies. Well done you!

giantkatestacks · 19/03/2009 19:49

I think you're grand too Neenz for all that but potatoes imagine the cost of 2 lots of disposables [shrinks back from screen in fear] and formula [eek] and jars [double eek]

bitofadramaqueen · 19/03/2009 20:07

Maria GKS suggested to me that the salt content was the most important thing in bread, so we use wholemeal as that seems the lowest of the breads we use.

We started with rice cakes, toast (with mashed banana, philadelphia, avocado, no-added sugar jam), giving veg from our plate, little sandwiches (tuna, philadelphia etc), toast and cheese...

More recently raisins, different fruit, those organix corn snack things, bits of stuff from our plate, and other things I can't think of just now.

I was pretty rubbish at 'being organised' at finger foods, but have been good at introducing lumps etc so it all balances out!

neenztwinz · 19/03/2009 21:45

Thanks potatoes but it's not so hard, like anything I suppose it is just a case of being organised and getting into a routine with it. I think making up bottles would have been harder than BF, I really enjoy using cloth nappies so that is no bind, and I always cook all my and DH's food from scratch so it is no problem to do the DTs' food like that!

Also, Kate is right, think of the cost (I am a right tight bugger )

I gave them tuna today again to see if we get windy pops again. I might try a bit of gripe water before the last feed if it happens again tonight.

Another Neenz-admiration post! On my own with dd for the weekend and lunch did not go well. She wouldn't finish her lamb casserole and refused her mash. Particularly on days like these (she got up at 5:45) I cannot imaging having twins!

Finally received my real nappy vouchers but haven't done anything about it . Have your lo's every had nappy rash?

giantkatestacks · 20/03/2009 12:39

Hi there mookickkick - my ds used to get nappy rash occasionally but my dd almost never - and they are in the same nappies. I use disposables at night as well.

mookickkick · 20/03/2009 12:47

Thanks kate, I think I've got no excuse really...

giantkatestacks · 20/03/2009 13:03

its true though that the longer you leave it the harder it is but its not compulsory you know...

neenztwinz · 20/03/2009 13:36

DD gets nappy rash bad sometimes, but DS never gets it. I use metanium - its magic. It's just about getting into a routine with cloth, not sure how much cheaper they actually are when you take into account the initial cost of them and the washing (and the fact you can get disposables pretty cheap esp when on special offer), but at least your bin doesn't get so full!

I only wash my nappies every four days which means I have to have a lot of them but the labour involved is decreased.

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 20/03/2009 13:39

I think they're loads cheaper neenz but I only have 12 and thats enough for me as I have a load of washing everyday and they just go in with them...and I've used them for 2 kids so 12@9quid each for two kids - isnt bad as disposables are supposed to be a grand a year...

potatoes · 20/03/2009 14:25

I have worked out my Bum Genius nappies pay for themselves at 1 per month, so as long as DS is in nappies for at least 20 months I will be better off. Washable wipes - anyone else use them? - save loads. And I feel smug using them.
DS used to get a sore bottom but now as long as i put loads of diprobase (moisturiser from the doc) on at every change his bottom stays lovely, squidgy and rash-free!

whinegums · 20/03/2009 15:35

Hello fellow puree lovers, we're going to need a new thread soon!

I'm catching up on all the threads I'm on after being away for a few days (good job we didn't go for any longer, I'd never catch up!) and DS is having a nap.

I'm trying to up his portions during the day, not too difficult as he's a little trougher, and cut down the night feeds. It all went a bit tits up when we were away, so trying to get back to a routine now. He was amazing, loved going out at night and making new friends, and wanted to try everything we were eating. Sooo he had his usual three meals a day (I took Plum and Ella stuff with us), and then bits of whatever we had. All sorts of Spanish food, tapas, including black pudding, squid, patatas bravas, etc, and of course loved chocolate con churros. I really was amazed at what he would eat.

BTW, those new Ella's Kitchen stage 2 pouches are great for travelling. Although I had to test the one I had in my hand luggage at Heathrow T5 - not for any of the other 3 flights though .

DramaQ, may I just salute your new found domestic skills btw?!

mookickkick · 20/03/2009 18:54

whinegums, your ds is a champion! even i have trouble with the spanish late nights. hope you pick up your old routine quickly.

dd had tea at nursery at 3:30pm. well, she had some watery puree and then smeared quiche all over her face and arms. by the time i tried to feed her at home, she was super tired and not that hungry. zonked out at 6:15. going to have to think what to feed her after nursery in future.

going to lie on the sofa make dinner now...

neenztwinz · 20/03/2009 20:29

With disposables, I reckon it only costs about £300 a year (5 nappies a day x 15p each = £273.75). I have about 50 cloth nappies (although most are terries ie dirt cheap) but say 30 nappies x £9 = £270 then you have washing costs. Cloth are cheaper overall but it is negligible if you have a large number of nappies (I am amazed at the number some people have!). Although the more kids you have the more saving you make. I wouldn't use anything but cloth now even if it was more expensive. Yeah I use washable wipes too - love them.

Welcome back Whinegums! Wow, your LO did really well. I love the idea of going out late at night Spain-style with the kids and having laid-back tapas and wine... happy days. I have just booked to go camping in May (we went last year but they were fully BF then so it was easier). Might have to check out those Ella's pouches!

The DTs are eating loads too at the moment. MIL was here today at tea time and I gave them finger food first cos their main wasn't ready. They had a slice of toast with soft cheese between them, then a slice of cheese each and then a rice cake with soft cheese on - MIL was like 'they won't eat their tea!' (I thought 'that IS their tea '. Anyway they then went on to eat about 10 dessertspoons of sweet potato, green veg and cous cous. She was gobsmacked. Then an Oatibix between them too (tho MIL had gone home by then).

Mookick, how old is your DD? Does she need a little afternoon nap? My two had 10-20mins at about 4.30 till they were about 9mo. Then they weren't too tired for their tea.

whinegums · 20/03/2009 20:57

EK stage 2 pouches are on offer at £1 each at Tesco atm so I've stocked up. Pretty pricey, but I don't mind for just a few days.

Tonight DS had homemade fruity chicken thing, and then green beans , baked beans , chips and sausage with his sisters who came for tea. Oh and some strawberries and ice cream too. I don't give him loads of 'grown up' food (not that that's particularly grown up), just a one or two pieces for him to taste and try.

I think his late night Spanish party lifestyle has finally caught up with him, he slept for 2 hours this afternoon (never happens unless I go to sleep with him, which I didn't) and has now been in bed since 7 - he normally wakes up after an hour. Oh god, wouldn't it be amazing if tonight is THE night that he finally sleeps through... (Which of course, I've jinxed by even entertaining the thought).
