Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

How did it go snowqueen?

we also just use the Yeo Valley natural yoghurt and add defrosted apples/pears/cooked plums etc...

do people make their own baked beans? the normal ones are quite sugary arent they?or have i got that wrong and you can get different ones now?

bitofasnowqueen · 13/12/2008 18:45

It went really well thanks giantsantasacks. He took quite a few mouthfuls and was opening his mouth whenever he saw the spoon coming. He didn't deliberately spit anything out, although obviously a lot just slipped out of his mouth as he has no idea yet how to get it to the back of his throat and swallow it!

We've been and bought a shed load of root veg and fruit, so will be stocking up the freezer with purees over the next few days. As long as I can get my handblender to work/buy a new one!

Re: baked beans - I remember the recipe for these and many other heinz products being changed because of sugar or salt.

pudding25 · 13/12/2008 19:40

Yeo valley yoghurt with tinned fruit puree is yum.

I gave dd Sainsburys low sugar/low salt beans the other night (couple of tablespoons). It was in my GF book so must be ok

DreamingOfMincePiesInAustria · 13/12/2008 22:13

Fish - I used to cook a fishfinger(good quality one with fillet not minced fish), eat all the rubbish coating myself then mash up the fish for ds

MERLYPUSSEDASAFART · 14/12/2008 21:40

They had kidney beans instead. The supasave (or whatever) ones form sainsbos have no salt in the juice but the next price range up does. We get the low salt/sugar b/beans from sainsbos too.

neenztwinz · 15/12/2008 09:32

You could also use cannelini, haricot or butter beans in a tomato sauce for baked beans.

OP posts:
pudding25 · 15/12/2008 13:12

Good idea about the fishfingers. Think I will try that one.

neenztwinz · 16/12/2008 13:41

Haddock was a big success today, mixed with parsnips and green beans. I bought a box of four frozen fillets from Tesco and poached one for 15 mins. It tasted lovely (nicer than cod!)

giantsantasacks · 16/12/2008 13:54

well done neenz - we've gone backwards as we're full of cold and not eating or sleeping - its horrendous.

am going to start on fish like that when/if we get our appetite back though.

neenztwinz · 16/12/2008 19:24

Yeah giant, when I say big success, I mean Theo ate it all (Esther's half too!). Esther is not eating at all well, i can only get baby rice down her at the moment. She has a cold too . So does Theo but it doesn't seem to have affected his appetite .

OP posts:
bitofasnowqueen · 17/12/2008 18:38

Theo clearly doesn't want to miss his food neenz!

Just popped on to say that weaning going well so far here after starting at the weekend. We had a few days of baby rice, and then a couple of days on carrot. He's taking a full ice cube worth each day quite happily.

neenztwinz · 17/12/2008 20:44

That's great BSQ! Esther was up every 2-3 hours last night BFing after eating very little yesterday . I think she has eaten more today (at tea time I just kept making more food thinking she keeps opening her mouth so i am going to keep shoving food in) - so hoping for a better night tonight!

OP posts:
bitofasnowqueen · 17/12/2008 21:47

Fingers crossed Neenz. S is really unsettled so far so suspecting a dreadful night .

giantsantasacks · 17/12/2008 22:18

mine is coughing away on the monitor as well... though shes much better than at the weekend...and she did demolish some sweet potato today so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

the worst thing is when they cant even bf they are so bunged up...

neenztwinz · 18/12/2008 09:29

Giant, I have found that they struggle to BF too when bunged up.

We did have a better night last night - Esther woke at 2.30 but then chatted to herself for an hour. After an hour I went in and fed her and she went back to sleep - she was keeping me awake! But obviously not that hungry cos she wasn't crying. She ate much better yesterday (esp at tea) - how anyone can say solid food is not linked to sleeping is beyond me!

OP posts:
giantsantasacks · 18/12/2008 09:32

yes neenz - dd is back to sleeping through as from last night - phew.

She is eating enormous amounts of food today so far.. am getting a bit stuck for ideas though - think will have to do a lamb dish of some sort - maybe lamb and apricots - have you got anything like this?

neenztwinz · 18/12/2008 20:14

Wow, lamb and apricots - exotic! I tried them with apricots for first time today with a bit of yogurt and they were not keen. It did taste really sweet to me, I know dried fruit is high in sugar so maybe did too much.

I haven't actually given the DTs any meat yet, only fish. I have a book by Patrick Holford (nutritionist who I love!) who says to introduce meat at 9mths, I think he is being overly cautious but I am happy to give them fish/beans/lentils at the mo. They are 7.5mths old now. I think at 9mths they will just be eating what we eat.

My DD is hardly eating anything . I hope it is just her cold or teething.

MoooCow · 18/12/2008 21:48

Hi puree fans!, Ive been struggling on with weaning for what seems like forever! My LO was really keen aom food at 20 weeks, then went off it. Due to a tooth we then realised. Started again with gusto....only to get a cold/cough so no food interest...'we are now at 26 weeks and food has become intersting the past two days. But not keen on milk, Has anyone else weaning foung that their LO's have gone off milk at weaning times? Im confused as I thought milk was the major thing for ages beyond now.

giantsantasacks · 19/12/2008 08:37

neenz - I have only done chicken and lentils and not fish/eggs etc as am super cautious as well but now shes taking chicken I think I can move on with other meats and the apricots was just a way of making it sweeter - may just fall back on the default position of sweet potatoes. she seems to struggle more with the dairy than with the meat tbh so am laying off cows milk and cheese sauces for now though she does have a little bit of yoghurt.

mooocow what is your schedule now then? we posted some of ours for 26 weeks at the top of the thread - fwiw I think my dd (7.5mos) is taking a lot less milk now though she still has a good feed at 6-7am and at bedtime, shes less keen at midmorning and midafternoon.

I leave at least an hour between milk and food though and tea is the only meal she has before milk - thats at 5-6pm.

neenztwinz · 19/12/2008 11:46

Mine went off milk too - but I find that if I feed them in their bedrooms (ie away from each other and any other distractions) they take a better feed. I still BF them first thing, 30mins after lunch, at about 3pm (they never take much then tho) and before bed. Also at 11pm and sometimes in the night too at the moment (I think cos they have a cold so keep waking and I feed them to get them back to sleep! They are maybe not eating too well either cos of their cold so are hungry in the night)

neenztwinz · 22/12/2008 13:24

I boiled up a load of apricots this morning and mixed with natural yogurt and they liked it. I was shocked to see that Muller Little Stars yogurts had sugar added to them so I just bought Yeo Valley organic natural yogurt and add fruit to it - bit of a faff tho. I am going to buy Hipp Organic fruit jars instead and use them to flavour the yogurt. will prob work out cheaper than Little Stars too.

Just adding this back on to my threads!

TottWriter · 22/12/2008 17:25

Hi all, I've been weaning for a few months now (DS is 8.5mths old). I have to confess to not really following much of a routine with him, and adding things rather randomly.

We've stuck with a rough daily routine, which consists of bottle first thing, breakfast, bottle, lunch/bottle then the other and then dinner, and a bottle in the evening.

Motherhood was kind of sprung upon me, so I've been really slow in sourcing these sorts of places out. Still, finally I made it.

He's got two teeth now, but given that if we give him something solid to eat he wedges a lot of it in (he's constantly having to have the last lump of rusk fished from his mouth) I'm rather reluctant to move on from anything but small pieces. He hasn't grasped the idea of feeding himself apart from chunky finger food yet either.

If I give him the spoon (as it suggests in many books, he hold it in one hand and grabs the food off it with the other and smears it on his trousers. Not productive. Any tips on how to get him to actually put it in his mouth with food on? (once the food is gon he happily chews on the spoon)

jadey24 · 24/12/2008 00:04

Hi everyone

I have just started weaning my dd in the past week.

So far just b.fast and for lunch apple puree & apple/pear puree.

She loves apple/pear puree. These are out the jars and have been giving her only small amounts of this for past few days but earlier after she had finshed it she sat there with her mouth open waiting for more lol so got her some more and again ate that and had her mouth open for more. She ended up having half a jar I think she has took to weaning really well.

I have blended some carrots for her and freezed them so will be starting her on dinner with that 2mor.

I always give her the spoon after to hold for a couple minutes so she can get use to it and she pops its straight into her mouth and licks it clean lol

Had a shock when her poop turned dark green since weaning but been assured it is all normal.

MERLYPUSSEDASAFART · 28/12/2008 20:03

Well, my two demolished a Christmas dinner. turkey, stuffing, broccoli, cauliflower (DT2 spat that out), sausage in bacon, green beans, peas (all time fave ATM), sweet pot, parsnip, carrots, bread sauce, brussels and trifle and mince pie for afters. All smushed up and handed to them. I took a jar in case they were picky but I was really impressed. They had bubble and squeak today mushed up and that was a hit too. I think perhaps they have got bored with the blander tasting bottled stuff and are willing to try more flavoursome food. Next week the chilli sauce
