Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Dd is loving baby rice and was better with carrot today. Yesterday I mixed it with some rice and her milk but she wasnt sure. Today I just gave her pureed carrot and she seemed to enjoy it more.

When I mixed in baby rice I just added a spoon full to the carrot IYSWIM.

I am going to try sweet potato tomorrow!

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 08/12/2008 20:42

Thanks Giantsantasacks - I will give that recipe a go

bitofasnowqueen · 08/12/2008 21:28

Ooh, which book did you get Essie? We have the meal planner and the 100 puree one (I think we got both as gifts).

Another question about baby rice... We're going to try some of that on Saturday. Do I just warm up DS's FF as usual and mix a little of the milk from his feed with the rice? Presumably I don't need to be making up some milk seperately for mixing with purees and rice?

Likewise, when thickening purees with rice do you just mix it straight from the pack when the food is warm, or mix it cold and then heat up?

neenztwinz · 08/12/2008 21:54

Whinegums - three times during the night ! Maybe try to get a bit more protein into him during the day? That is supposed to help with sleep (but protein can strain the kidneys so not too much!).

Essie, When mixing food with baby rice I just heat the food, put it in the bowl, add some milk and then add baby rice straight from the packet to make it the required thickness.

Snowqueen, yeah you can just use milk from his usual feed, or make separate, I suppose it would depend how much milk he wants after his solids. They are supposed to have as much milk as before but it is OK to mix it into food. I don;t think my DTs have as much milk as before now (7mths old) but its difficult cos I am BFing.

neenz (hi again btw ) my dd definately wants less milk now and yet all the meals apart from dinner are milk first and shes only having 3-4 small cubes a meal. Strange isnt it...

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 08/12/2008 22:18

I make up a 1oz bottle of milk for food as dd has solid food an hour after her bottle. I make the small bottle up and use it for lunch as its still hot then heat it for her tea.

What food combinations did your lo's like? Im thinking carrot and potato?? Maybe brocolli and potato. I guess you cant really give them potato on its own?

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 08/12/2008 23:16

Hi Snowqueen - I now have the meal planner, and 'feeding your baby and toddler'. I think they're basically the same...

bitofasnowqueen · 09/12/2008 09:15

There's definitely a lot of the same recipes in both my books Essie. I did notice in the 'meal planner' that chicken isn't introduced until stage two 7-9 months, but in the 100 purees there are some chicken and fish recipes for 6-7 month.

Thanks all for milk chat - Lauraloola I might just try making up an oz at lunchtime to start with to see how I get on.

pudding25 · 09/12/2008 13:49

I have decided that DD has hollow legs. She doesn't stop eating but has only put on 9 oz in 2 wks. Got her weighed today and she's 16lb 3oz (7mths). Yesterday, she ate 6 shredded wheat with banana, tuna fish pie and brocolli, a rice cake and 2 carrot organix crisps, potato with cheese, milk and pea puree plus 3 x bottles formula and 1 bf! I think she would have eaten more if I had offered it too.

pudding25 · 09/12/2008 13:51

Snowqueen - When I made the baby rice (or for cereal), I just add a couple of scoops of formula and then however much water to make the consistency I want. I tried making it up in the bottle but when I added it to the rice, it was far too runny.

giantsantasacks · 09/12/2008 15:53

6 shredded wheat? blimey shes eating more than me

bitofasnowqueen · 09/12/2008 19:06

Thanks pudding, will bear that in mind. Going shopping for all my root veg tomorrow to make my first purees .

DH would like to point out that after 4 years together I've never cooked him a meal. DS has been here 5 minutes...

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 09/12/2008 20:14

Today I have steamed and pureed brocolli and potato - It stinks! I did some potato in small pots to add to the carrot to make that a bit different.

I am surprised at how quick steaming is - It seems to take less time then boiling. I thought it took longer?

giantsantasacks · 09/12/2008 20:59

yes steaming is good - i must admit I'm too lazy to clean the thing so never get it out . Apparently we absorb lots more nutrients when oil is added to food so it might be an idea to add a tiny bit of olive oil as well.

neenztwinz · 09/12/2008 22:03

Good tip re the oil, didn't know that.

at Pudding's LO eating all that . Mine went through a phase like that where they just seemed to eat and eat. They seem to go up and down with their appetite. I am much more relaxed about it now.

As for mixing food, I mix anything and everything but find it has to have lots of sweet pot or parsnip in (or other sweet-tasting veg) to be liked. Today they had haricot beans, butternut squash, parsnip, sweet pot and broccoli. Parsnip, sweet pot and apple was also a big hit!

Can I ask about defrosting/heating frozen purees? How do most people defrost the purees - overnight in fridge or microwave?

Also, once purees defrosted presumably the food gets heated up and then left to cool to baby friendly temperature?

Early in the thread some people mentioned they give their babies food at room temperature when out and about - do you heat it up before you go out and then just let it cool.

Sorry, probably all very daft questions but just want to check!

giantsantasacks · 10/12/2008 17:27

I think microwaving removes nurtrients but i think most people do it - I chuck a few cubes into an ikea kids bowl and zap then stir, zap again etc - then let it cool down or add some water/ebm if it needs to be runnier.

when out and about I head for a debenhams etc that has a microwave or I defrost it and feed it at room temp - jars I always gave at room temp with ds1 - likewise cows milk when he moved onto it...

other people may be much more fastidious so its best to see what others do...

bitofasnowqueen · 10/12/2008 18:14

Thanks giantsantasacks !

mulledwhinegums · 10/12/2008 20:05

Neenz, I've given him chicken and lentils up til now, and for tea he has had your favourite cod, so fingers crossed eh?! Over the last few days he hasn't really taken much milk during the day (hard to tell as bf, but doesn't feel like as much ifyswim). I keep offering, but he's only taking two really good bfs during the day now, and maybe another two 'snacks'. Anyway, the cod went down well - with sweet pot, carrot, milk and baby rice.

SnowQ - - your poor DH - maybe you could whip him up a little baby rice risotto? I do pretty much the same as giantsantasacks - take out a few cubes of whatever from the freezer, zap on half power. If I'm mixing it with something else, that's usually chilled, so it cools it to room temp. DS doesn't seem bothered what temp food comes at luckily, so I hope I'm spared the faff of heating stuff up when out.

bitofasnowqueen · 10/12/2008 20:41

Very occasionally I make him french toast (eggy bread) whinegums! Am definitely swinging towards the room temperature, was just worried about meat really - if it was defrosted/warmed in the microwave in the morning, is it still ok to serve if out and about at lunch time?

pudding25 · 10/12/2008 21:13

Don't know about being out and about as so far, she always gets lunch at home as she then goes down for her nap and I mumsnettidy

I take lunch and dinner out of the freezer in the morning, put in fridge. Heat in microwave for about a minute and let cool to baby temperature.

That was 6 MINI shredded wheat I must add.

Today, for lunch, DD had a big bowl of baby spaghetti with a sauce made from garlic, onion, tuna and cheese. It was so strong. She loved it but did garlicky burps for the rest of the day . She used to have such sweet smelling breath and now I have made my baby smell of tuna and garlic!!

I can't believe the amount she is putting away. It is so funny -and she chews everything but has not teeth!

giantsantasacks · 10/12/2008 21:22

lol - I did have a mental image of this little baby tucking into their mahoosive bowl of 6 shredded wheat...

MadameCheese · 10/12/2008 21:38

Has anyone got any good lentil based recipes for an 8 month old? Also would like to do something with chickpeas, got any ideas? I'm not a veggie BTW

mulledwhinegums · 10/12/2008 22:55

Ah, eggy bread... bless! I love it when DP makes that (I do all of the cooking apart from the v odd occasion). In general food hygiene terms, I'd suggest defrosting meat slowly overnight in the fridge (it would quite possibly still be partially frozen in the morning) and then taking it out with you - by lunch time it should be fully defrosted and at room temp and safe to eat. Certainly safer than warming it up and then taking it out - breeding ground for bacteria that way!

Pudding - bless your garlicky burpy baby!

B had a good chew at my banana this afternoon - no teeth here either, but funny to watch him gumming away.

pudding25 · 11/12/2008 09:43

She no longer smells of garlic!

Hi Madame Cheese - I made this lentil recipe (from GF book). It was yum.

4-6 servings can freeze

75g red lentils
150g parsnips
225g carots
350g potatoes
600ml baby stock or water

Put lentils and root veg in a pan with the stock. Bring to boil, cover and simmer for 4 mins or until lentils are soft.

Puree and try not to eat it all before your baby gets some
