General chat thread for puree lovers!

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

We did that too Laura - I'd love to watch the film back now, I bet it is hilarious cos they didn;t have a clue what was happening... but I used the disc to video my sister's wedding so she now has my twins first taste of apple puree then her wedding!

It is great fun, although quite frustrating if they refuse to eat stuff. But that's what this thread is for!

Laura - I agree - we wait an hour after feeds and then attempt the food. Apart from dinner which we do at 5pm and then a milk feed just before bed. Dinner is unsurprisingly the one that my dd eats most at...

I dont know what other people feel but I think its good to always do the solids around the same time each day if possible.

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 05/12/2008 12:06

Well, the carrot attempt last night was a total failure. Although the video is superb!
However, the baby rice elevenses was a success! He had his milk first thing, then after a (rather unscheduled) early nap, video camera at the ready, I tried him with some baby rice. 3 spoonfuls did seem to go down! Should I have carried on a bit longer?
Do I now try again at lunchtime? Or leave it until tomorrow?

bitofasnowqueen · 05/12/2008 15:01

Glad baby rice was a success Essie.

Questions for those with babies already established on 3 meals a day...What time do you feed solids/milk usually?

DS is a GF-ish baby and has milk at 7, 11, 2.30 and bedtime (he's a naughty GF baby because he's already dropped his dream feed). If we stick with GF routines his routine will look something like this once he's on 3 meals a day:

7am - breakfast/milk
11.30-12 - lunch
mid-afternoon - milk
5pm - tea
bedtime - milk

But I noticed that AK meal planner has an extra feeding time in:

breakfast/milk
Mid-morning/milk
Lunch
Mid-afternoon milk
Tea
Bedtime milk

Would be really interested to know what kind of routine people are following once their babies are having 3 substantial meals a day.

I've got a way to go before reaching this stage, but I like to think ahead!

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 05/12/2008 15:38

Is the AK meal planner in the 'Feeding your Baby and Toddler' book? (Sorry, random question there!)

giantsantasacks · 05/12/2008 15:44

snowqueen - cant remember but i think we did put up some schedules inthis thread before - have a look right at the beginning - that may have been another thread though...we are 7 months and our schedule looks like this:

7am bf
7.45-8am breakfast
10.30 bf
11.30 lunch
2.30 bf
5pm dinner
7pm bf

and no dreamfeed!

essie - i think you should carry on until they stop opening their mouth - once they start turning away and fussing then you're done... I would do a few days or even a week of just lunch before moving onto dinner as well.

bitofasnowqueen · 05/12/2008 18:25

It's in the AK 'new complete baby and toddler meal planner' Essie. Was it you who was stranded without your AK book? If so, the first taste stage reads - week 1 lunch, week 2-3 lunch and breakfast. After that breakfast, lunch and tea. No idea how that is in practice obviously as I haven't started.

Will have a look at the beginning of the thread giantsantasacks thanks.

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 05/12/2008 22:41

Yes, Snowqueen, it was me! Thanks - I am currently uploading my video of Iestyn repeatedly rejecting carrot puree to facebook. But looking at the baby rice video, I wish I'd persevered and kept going with the rice.
So early lunch tomorrow as well (he tends to sleep at midday, so it's elevenses here) and for the rest of the week, and start adding meals.

A question about this rice. I mixed it with my milk, and he had some but not all. Do I now have to bin the rest? Or can I give it tomorrow?

giantsantasacks · 05/12/2008 22:57

yes bin it - thats why its best to only mix a little at a time so you dont lose precious ebm.

tomorrow the rice will have all disappearred anyway as the enzymes break it down

giantsantasacks · 05/12/2008 22:58

disappeared sorry

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 05/12/2008 23:24

Damn, a tablespoonful of ebm!!! He will eat ALL of it tomorrow...

pudding25 · 06/12/2008 13:31

Hi SnowQueen -we are doing the GF one. DD (nearly 7mths) now has 4 milk feeds (still has dreamfeed) per day. First thing, mid afternoon, before bed and dreamfeed (plus breakfast, lunch and dinner).

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 06/12/2008 13:38

Dd had her first baby rice at lunch time and loved it! She was looking for more!

I want to try something tomorrow and was thinking of banana or veg? What is best to go for?

bitofasnowqueen · 06/12/2008 16:13

Thanks pudding - I think I might stick with the GF routines if they continue to suit DS - AK has far too many mealtimes for my liking... I'd never get out of the house

CuppaTeaJanice · 06/12/2008 16:21

At the moment he's got 40 meals of carrot, courgette and apple mix in the freezer.

Looks like pondwater, tastes like heaven!!!

giantsantasacks · 06/12/2008 16:25

I would go for veg laura - banana can sometimes bung them up...

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 06/12/2008 16:27

Oh right, thanks.

giantsantasacks · 07/12/2008 20:28

btw first chicken casserole hoovered up tonight - even through intense teething with first tooth poking through today

neenztwinz · 08/12/2008 13:04

How did you make the chicken casserole?

Mine had prunes for breakfast for the first time and loved it - boiled them in water for 5mins or so and then mixed it with baby rice. We are also having some success with BLW (but they don't eat enough to not do purees too)

OP posts:
SamJohnsMum · 08/12/2008 15:34

This is a fab thread - I can stand up and announce my love of purees!!

My DS is currently having a bit of fruit and baby rice for breakfast and some pureed veg for lunch (swede went down well today and he has also loved potato and pea, sweet potato and parsnip with carrot). I'm thinking about adding in some tea tomorrow - by that I mean something to eat around teatime, not a cup of PG, by the way!! He's a bit of a random feeder (exclusively BF and 6 mo) but I'm starting to get a bit more of a routine with solids, which is nice.

I am starting to give him mashed rather than pureed food at times now, too - but scared of the choking thing.

On the subject of ice cube trays, I have the AK ones and I agree, not that great. However, a friend recommended some ones from Lakeland - they're blue and have really easy 'pop-out' bottoms - they're not cheap at £6.99, but I think they are really brilliant and I'll carry on using them for normal ice cubes after DS is weaned.

lauraloolajinglesalltheway · 08/12/2008 16:28

Oh yeah, recipe for chicken casserole please giantsacks.

I have Ak trays from Boots and I am struggling to get the food out aswell! I have small pots from Mothercare that you put the food in, freeze, microwave and feed from so I may try those.

giantsantasacks · 08/12/2008 16:48

I just fry some onion in olive oil slowly until cooked but not brown then add the chicken breast in small pieces and cook - when thats cooked add any veg that baby has had already so we had swede, carrot, a bit of sweet potato and some potato and just enough water to cover - it was like an inch and a half, bring to the boil and then simmer for an hour with the lid on - by that time it will be really mushy - enough to mash with a potato masher and freeze.

really easy and no expensive baby stock needed

bitofasnowqueen · 08/12/2008 18:16

Don't know if I came back and mentioned this already but I ended up buying flexible icecube trays in ikea - only a £1 each, so if they're no good then not a huge waste of cash. However, they are novelty shaped, but I don't think DS will notice .

mulledwhinegums · 08/12/2008 20:31

Hello all. Pureeing fun continues here. I made chicken and veg for DS today, from our roast yesterday. I wasn't sure if he'd go for it, as I used celeriac and leek as well as sweet potato, broccoli and carrot, but it went down a treat. I picked up a couple of silicone muffin trays from the local pound shop, which are perfect for freezing meal portions btw.

I can't believe he is eating so much, but still feeding three times during the night. Might try giving him water, I think a few others have had success with that?

EssieAStarInBethlehem · 08/12/2008 20:38

Evening all!
Well, baby rice is going down now. But not so great on the fruit and veg. The carrot has been a disaster really. Now, Mrs Karamel says to mix with baby rice or milk.
Do I... make up baby rice with my milk and then mix it in?

He did have some apple puree today (the shame of it, it was Peter Rabbit!) and I made a load of pear puree. To make it all thin I just pureed the water too - is that right?

I have really good ice cube trays from Blooming Marvellous: these ones. But I'm also keen on my Mothercare ones mainly for their dinkyness...

SnowQueen I relented and bought a Mrs Karamel (my mum accidentally called her that and it's stuck) book and it turns out to be a tiny bit different to the one I have in Wales! Sneaky!
