Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

I just use normal (cheap) ice cube trays as well and then pop them out into a bowl to defrost.

and no you dont need a hand blender but it does make it easier and you can pick them up really cheaply at argos - they're especially useful when you're doing stuff like chicken casserole that has big bits of stuff thats hard to mash. and think of the soup you can make as well ;-)

consistency wise...hmm thats difficult to describe and mine tends to have whatevers come out of the blender - so sometimes its quite thick - the lentil stew for instance - still with bits of veg and sometimes its pretty runny and needs thickening up - apple or pear for example - it shouldnt really run out of the bowl though if you tip it up - more a sort of glacial slide if you see what I mean...mind you as I said you could hold my lentils upside down and there would be no movement

BSQ -I bought the Annabel Karmel ones (before I read on here that they were crap) and they are overpriced and quite crap!

I got some goodcheap ones from Sainsburys.

I boiled the veg/fruit and pureed it with a bit of the cooking water (using a hand blender). Mixed with baby rice, I started off a bit thinner and gradually it went really gloopy, like porridge.

Started mashing fruit now. Banana and pear went ok. Tried to give her mashed plum with her porridge this morning. It was a bit lumpy. She was crying. Not sure if it was the lumps or the plum as sh's not had it before. Abandoned that and made her some more with a bit of mashed banana.

Goint to start mashing most things from next wk when she's 7 mths.

pudding25 · 03/12/2008 13:47

And she ate her first rice cake all by herself today! (I am sure I had a life before dd where I had something interesting to say for myself )

giantsantasacks · 03/12/2008 13:48

plums can be quite sharp cant they - mine doesnt like them either unless they've been stewed.

Neenztwinz · 03/12/2008 16:32

Which rice cakes are they? Are any OK or does it have to a certain type?

I use cheap rubber ice cube trays from Tesco, they seem more robust than plastic ones which always crack when I am trying to get stuff out of them.

BSQ/BDQ To prepare I would bake some sweet potato then mash/whizz the insides and put in ice cube trays to freeze. When frozen pop them out into a freezer bag. Do the same with butternut squash, parsnip, swede, carrot, apple, pear etc etc and then over Christmas you can just grab a handful of cubes from various bags and mix them together. Don't worry too much about the combinations, just throw anything together. 'After first tastes accepted' I imagine you'll be using about six-eight cubes per meal.

I think they were the organix ones, although I am thinking I could have saved money, bought a big pack of normal thin rice cakes and broken them up for the same price. Had to stop myself eating them as I love rice cakes.

giantsantasacks · 03/12/2008 21:13

lol...again with the eating of the baby food...

pudding - has she got any teeth?was it scary?

mulledwhinegums · 03/12/2008 21:13

BSQ - ho ho ho! I like the Beaba thing too, but can't can't buy any more stuff for my kitchen full stop. I let B gum on my banana and pear today. A bite for mummy, a gumming for B. He didn't get much, maybe a little banana, but obviously liked the taste!

giantsantasacks · 03/12/2008 21:16

btw I found with my last ds that he would eat the frozen white fish - i think it was hake or whiting just the same as cod and its much cheaper - every supermarket does them and you can just defrost them and then cook them all the same - in milk or whatever.

neenztwinz · 04/12/2008 09:13

Oh good tip Giant! I always put bits of bread on their trays now and DS is good at getting them in his mouth. DD is good at dropping them on the floor.

They were off their food yesterday, I think DS is teething or has a cold, he was really whingy yesterday which is not like him and then woke three times between 7pm-10pm and then again at 11pm and 2am! Luckily for me DD only woke at 10pm and then slept till the morning. It is hard when I have to get up to both of them. Thankfully that is rare.

But yesterday made me realise that they don't have to eat enormous amounts to sleep OK. I sometimes find myself shovelling food in thinking 'you have to eat cos I have to sleep' . I am playing the twins card (again)!

I had to reorganise my kitchen cupboards mulledwhinegums to fit in baby stuff and create room for baby food, bowls, spoons etc. We've got an ok size kitchen but could easily do with twice the cupboard space.

Sorry, not particularly puree related chat - forgive me as I really popped in to spread some Christmas cheer

giantsantasacks · 04/12/2008 10:08

neenz - do you do bread and not toast? does it ever go a bit claggy in their mouths and get stuck? A hypothetical question becuase am not doing either yet for wheat related reasons (had one toast lapse last week but am ignoring that).

neenztwinz · 04/12/2008 12:43

I just use bread cos it is easy to put on their trays without any prep! I had not thought of doing toast. TBH they only suck on it anyway (actually DD ignores it, DS sucks), don't think he has actually ever eaten any of it. Might try toast later though and see how they do. Don't really want them eating wheat yet anyway but I do it so they can practice feeding themselves. They would not be getting any food at all with BLW! But I hope to move more to BLW when they can get more in.

DD has no teeth. She sat on my DH's knee while she ate the rice cake and kind of sucked at it. It goes really soft. She seemed to eat it without any probs.

pudding25 · 04/12/2008 12:59

I have spent 4 hrs this morning cooking for DD!!! Macaroni cheese, chicken gratin, root veg medley, corn chowder and still have fish pie to make! It is all going in the freezer. I am shattered. I kind of pulsed it with the hand blender so that it is not totally pureed. She had better eat it all. Our freezer is now pretty uch full of food for her.

neenztwinz · 04/12/2008 13:44

I bet your kitchen looks a right state Pudding. I couldn;t believe the state of mine yesterday.

DTs have been off their food a bit last couple of days - had to go back to basics again and have realised they need lots of sweet-tasting veg (sweet pot, parsnip, swede, butternut squash) in order to really like stuff. They had cod, parsnip, sweet pot and broccoli for lunch and have both had a really good lunchtime nap .

Afternoon all!
I'm going to start my little son on solids this weekend, and I have the Annabel Karmel book (but have forgotten it in Wales). So some questions for puree fans:

  1. What to start him on? Carrot puree? Or is fruit better? Or baby rice?
  2. How much do I give him?
  3. And, er, how? On a spoon, I assume but warm or cold? And is there a better time?
EssieAStarInBethlehem · 04/12/2008 14:18

I've read the whole thread now, I'm abnormally excited about weaning, but it's been quite helpful.
Do you go from bfing to 3 purees a day straight away? Or go slowly?

goingfor3 · 04/12/2008 14:27

essie do it slowly. Your baby will let you know when they need another meal. I started with lunch, then did breakfast and dinner and then added lunch back in. Do it at the times that suit you. He may only take a couple of spoons at the start or may eat loads!

giantsantasacks · 04/12/2008 17:00

agree with gf3 - lunch is definately the best to start on so if it doesnt agree with them its not going to upset their sleep.

and I would start with carrots or pears - one or the other and if they completely refuse just leave it for a bit and try a few days later - you can tell if they're just not ready...

pudding25 · 04/12/2008 19:59

I would start with a bit of baby rice at lunchtime, then if that is ok, try a bit of fruit or veg. Go slowly like everyone says. It takes a good few days for them to get used to eating something different.

I am starting to wean dd on Saturday but at the mo her feeds are all over the place.

I have seen that your lo shouldnt be too hungry when you start but she has started crying for her bottle as her routine is out the window.

Am I best to give half a bottle then baby rice even if she cries for her bottle?

neenztwinz · 04/12/2008 21:09

If she cries just give her the bottle until she stops, then try the food. No point trying to give her baby rice if she is upset. At first she won't eat much anyway, it is just to try to get her used to swallowing (she'll spit it out at first) so there's no need for her to be really hungry. Once mine got the hang of it (within a few days) I didn't bother with half a milk feed first cos I felt they weren't hungry enough for food, I gave them a full milk feed an hour before solids.

Essie, I just started with a bit of fruit or veg mixed with ebm and baby rice (or plain baby rice) at 11/11.30am, then when they got the hang of it started giving them baby rice at 6pm too. Then after a couple of weeks I was giving breakfast too and more substantial amounts for lunch and tea.

Essie - I am v.excited too! I have everything ready and waiting to be washed. The video camera will be charged tomorrow and I expect I will take 100 photos of the occasion
