Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Yeah you can put sweet pot in microwave like normal spud, then just scoop out the insides. Same for squash (I'd bake though if you can)

G43 thanks for that, will try cooking it!

G43, just tried the potato, spinach and quinoa recipe from your book suggestion and she has demolished the lot!! I couldn't find quinoa flakes so just bought the normal quinoa and threw that in for 10 minutes and did puree in the end as the bits of spinach were quite long so didn't want dd3 to choke on a long bit. I love your book!
Hi kate again! For night feeds I am stretching out the time between feeds as she was back to newborn stage , ie every 2 hours. So, she's now up to about 4 to 5 hours and I can cope with that but she is waking inbetween and I have to go and soothe her so still getting up just as much. I think it will get better soon, always one step forward and then 2 back when you are trying to change a habit.
Thanks for all the bf timings, I think mine is similar to most so once there's only one nighttime feed I think she will be getting just the right amount.

Janus · 27/11/2008 13:17

One more thing, are you now giving yours vitamin drops (for bf as formula has added vitamins)? I haven't as I thought a balanced diet should do it but I do remember giving them to my first in particular (very poor eater) and wonder what you are all doing?

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 13:24

no - i didnt with my ds and so arent now - my hv hasnt mentioned it - i saw a great post on another thread about it with links to kellymom showing that you shouldnt have to - unless you were one of a specialist group - ie breastfeeding veiled mothers etc.

isnt it the case that formula has added vits and minerals but the ones in bmilk are much easier to digest so it evens out?

another question - can yours pick up rice and spaghetti from their tray? mine really cant at all...

goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 14:36

Janus DS loves that one too. I have the rice pudding cooking at the moment (normal not coconut). I will also make some apples with cinamon to go with it. I didn't give drops to my girls and am satisfied that ds has a balanced diet - certainly better than mine!!!

goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 14:37

giantkatestacks ds can pick things up. Managed some chickpeas at lunch and sliced runner beans.

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 16:11

hmm I havent tried big things just slippery things like pear and stupidly tiny things like rice and bits of spaghetti - will try bigger stuff when I get more confident about the nonchoking business...

pudding25 · 27/11/2008 17:55

No, dd doesn't have anything between 8.15am and 11.45am. She doesn't get hungry or grouchy. I must be lucky. She's very rarely cried for milk either. Never been a hungry baby (unlike her mother

She's got lentil stew to look forward to tomorrow.

pudding25 · 27/11/2008 18:00

DD can pick things up and put them in her mouth but nbot tired with proper food yet. Am going to give it a go next time DH is off (in case she gags and I have a breakdown

I just boiled the sweet potato and pureed it. Was bloody nice! I am finishing off all her food. Am going to end up the size of a whale.

tassisssss · 27/11/2008 19:26

hello there!

my dd (3rd child) is 25 weeks and about 3 weeks into weaning but has been piddling about with the teeniest amounts for the past few weeks and most of it ending up on the bib (or my sleeve as she prefers to feed on our lap!). Anyway in the past 24 hours things appear to have clicked - today she has a cube of pear this am with her daddy, a cube of cauli followed by pear at lunch and a cauli/carrot combo for tea. So 5 cubes and loads of BM today...here's hoping for a good night sleep!

I love purees. I love popping the icecubes into bags, I love eating more soups and stews and things like butternut squash and sweet potato. This is such a fab time of year to wean (much harder to puree a lettuce leaf!)

simpson · 27/11/2008 20:24

Pudding - i finish off DD's food too so will also be the size of a house

tassisssss - LOL at pureeing lettuce leaf

Giantkatestacks - my DD is really lazy and wants everything just put her in her mouth. The only things she will feed herself is bread sticks, rice cakes and the odd biscuit. But she will chomp on some big lumps of food. Today she wouldn't hold a broccoli baton and had a total hissy fit when I put it on tray but if put it in her mouth she will then eat it, same with pasta shells I pop them into her mouth one at a time She still doesn't have any teeth and am hoping when she does (eventually) get some she might be more inclined to try some finger foods.

Forgot to mention, her absolute favourite is blueberries!!Again I have to pop them into opened mouth though!!

Neenztwinz · 27/11/2008 22:31

Tassisss, have you tried mixing her food with milk and baby rice - she might find it more appealing. Bloody hell, look at me telling everyone to use baby rice! Before I started to wean I was like 'I just don't get baby rice - there is no substance to it and it must be so processed to get it into that state' . How opinion changes! I find that adding it to almost anything the DTs refuse makes them eat it.

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 22:34

roasted some sweet potato this evening btw and it was lovely - I can say that with confidence cos i wolfed down half of it before it went anywhere near the ice cube trays tsk...

Parofleurmapu · 28/11/2008 08:53

Hehe at the eating of purees, the way i see it is that i wont get fat but am eating a more healthy diet well all those vegetables!!!!

jeanjeannie · 28/11/2008 13:34

Awww, lovely thread and some gorgeous ideas - thanks ladies

It's a fab time of year to wean, lashings of root veg. Good to see someone else is eating the roast sweet potato before it hits the ice cube trays...tee hee!!

DD2 is 6 mnths and it's the first week of weaning - she's slamming her hands down, grabbing the mush and thoroughly enjoying herself

pudding25 · 28/11/2008 13:43

DD LOVES baby rice (and it is delicious mixed with pureed pear-yum yum).

I was very brave today and gave her a little tinned carrot (salt free of course ) to hold and eat. She loved it and hate half of it.

flourybaps · 28/11/2008 13:54

Well done pudding25 Im just not brave enough to try my dd on 'real' food yet. She even gags on the puree sometimes I hate it, Ill have to get braver.

Neenztwinz · 28/11/2008 13:54

Thats great Pudding. I have been putting bits of pitta on DTs high chair trays and DT1 chases it round, picks it up then drops it on the floor. DT2 is not interested at all!

Welcome Jeanjeannie.

I am giving a massive thumbs up to cod - they eat it no probs mixed with other stuff they like (as it is not too strong a taste - they hated salmon) and I read today in Prima baby that giving fish (white or oily) before 9mths can help fight excema if you have it in the fanily, which we do! Also the twins seem to sleep really well after cod (it's all the protein you see ).

OP posts:
tassisssss · 28/11/2008 13:56

yes babyrice is mixed to most fruit/veg here for a thicker consistency. Pear without it is so watery.

I bought sweet potato, butternut and melon (now that definately needs a thickener!) for my girl to try this week. And she hits 6 month any day so will graduate to readybrek. All fun.

stayatworkmummy · 28/11/2008 13:58

I'm a puree lover and proud. DD was two months prem so isn't hitting any milestones apart from growth ones, she 8 months old and already in 12-18 month clothes, she's very long (unlike mummy).
She loves her pureed veg and fruit and also yoghurts. Tried her with fish and chicken but she's not keen at all. Also give her finger food whilst we eat so she's up in her highchair 'eating' with us (well, sucking and dropping mainly but it's a start). I'm a firm believer there is no right or wrong way to wean, you do what's right for you and your child.

tassisssss · 28/11/2008 14:00

stayatwork - have you seen any of the annabel recipes for fish and chicken? she puts fish with random things like orange and it seems to work...my other 2 loved them. sounds like your wee one's doing great!

goingfor3 · 28/11/2008 14:37

Neenz my DS seems the opposite to your twins, he loves strong flavoured food. Salmon is a big hit here. For lunch today he had garlic and herb cream cheese on toast and loved it. He aslo had some lentil bake.

giantkatestacks · 28/11/2008 15:18

I was caught short (so to speak) at a cafe today after dd ate all of her roast sweet potato and demanded more and so gave her some well buttered toast - a palpable hit even though I wasnt going to do wheat til a bit later...

trouble is shes been quite sick this afternoon and because I broke my own rules and gave her 3 new things today - and the sweet potato had whole milk in it- and now I dont know which one it was...sweet potato, whole milk, toast or butter...doh...

Neenztwinz · 28/11/2008 15:23

Oh dear, giant... I would just introduce the four new things one at a time over the next four days and see what happens.

The same thing happened to me, I tried banana and something else new and their was a reaction, it was the banana but now she can eat banana so maybe it was just a teething rash. Who knows. So it could be unrelated to the food. Perhaps she has just eaten too much?

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 28/11/2008 15:27

yes it could be too much food though the sick had bits of sweet potato in it (sorry if tmi) and thats never happened before and suggests that her stomach isnt happy with it...I would be surprised though and suspect the toast or the butter more...will do some more swpotato tomorrow lunch and see what happens - was going to do chicken tomorrow though...god am becoming weaning obsessed
