General chat thread for puree lovers!

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Oh, neenz avacados, my SIL suggested mixing with mashed banannas. Didn't work for my first, but will try again with this one.

Neenztwinz · 26/11/2008 22:12

Fairey, I found apple was a no, think it was because it is a bit tart. I put it in with sweet potato and parsnip and they love it tho. Try butternut squash, you can just bake it in the oven for about 1.5hrs on 200C and then slice it open and scoop the insides out. Before 26 weeks I would just stick to fruit and veg and baby rice. At 26 weeks introduce red lentils (just boil for 20 mins, no need to puree!) and mabe cod - they are pretty bland tastes so will probably be accepted. I found salmon was a no cos it was such a strong taste. They wer Ok with tuna though. Haricot beans are also very convenient and a good source of protein. Just drain them from the tin and mash/whizz.

Pudding, mine are on similar routine, but I have to give lunch at 11am or they are just too tired. They hav e breakfast at 8.30 and lunch at 11 abnd nothing in between (29 weeks old).

Another reason why I started this thread is because when I first started weaning I was scared to ask questions on this board about purees (cos I started at 22 weeks too). At least people starting out can come here and ask questions without having BLW shoved down their throat

I do feel duty bound to point out for any lurkers though that the advice is to exclusively bf until 26 weeks because of the risks of food particles leaking into the gut...

neenztwinz - am going to start on lentils next week - good tip about the haricot beans as well - have you done chickpeas too?

simpson · 26/11/2008 22:44

Can i join??

DD is 9mths and has a dairy intolerance so can't have cows milk or yogurt (pity because she LOVES it)

She is a good eater and loves fish pie (ok mashed spud and flaked salmon to you and me!!)

I have a 3yr old DS so sometimes have to feed ellas kitchen pouches, plum pots but sometimes add things to it like couscous, cooked chicken etc.

The only thing she totally HATES is butternut squash.

Have quickly skimmed thread and Egg I take my hat off to you, I struggle with just one LO!!

Talking of cups DD manages fine with tommy tippee with water but have just started her on nuby cup for milk.

Fairey - I second Neenz DD only likes apple mixed with something sweeter (I normally do it with parsnip or sweet potato)

MERLYPUSS · 26/11/2008 22:59

Great thread. My DTs are 10 months this w/e
Today they had:
7am - 7oz formula
9am - 1/2 banana and 1/2 avocado and greek yog each with prunes (DT1 has poo problem). Mugged my toast, handful of cheerios to entertain them whilst I washed up. Squash.
11am - 4oz formula milk
1pm - mince, sweet pot, carrot Heinze mild curry pot. They both spat the curry and the mince out so I squidged it in with a stage 1 jar that was reduced and they ate that. greek yog, Squash
3pm - 4oz formula milk
5pm - Turkey stew, jacket spud innards, baked beans. Fruit
6.30 - 8oz formula milk.
Crawling it a mine field. You need 3 sets of eyes.

flourybaps · 27/11/2008 07:42

egg thanks so much for the post and the links to the cups, very helpful.

flourybaps · 27/11/2008 07:49

with naps 3 times a day and bottles 4 times a day and puree twice a day Im finding it realy hard to get out of the house at the moment, I feel trapped! Anyone else feel like this? I honestly feel Ill be glad to get back to work at least then i can leave the house!

If you do go out how do you warm puree up? or will your lo's just take it cold?

ErnestTheBavarian · 27/11/2008 08:03

I felt like you and quickly got my dc used to room temp food/drink much easier

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 10:06

you can always plan to be near somewhere with a microwave - not always easy and I know that reduces the nutrients...debenhams and a few other cafes - m&s etc have them...if not and you're out all day then they defrost in the tupperware and yes they have to eat them room temp...[bleugh]

fbaps - could you make one of the naps a trip out so that they dc sleeps in the buggy?am the other way round - in this weather I hate leaving the house. my ds has to drag me out for his school run brr...

Egg · 27/11/2008 10:16

If I am giving pots / sachets I just give them at room temperature (same with formula) but if it my own stuff I either give it freshly cooked so warm, or warm it up as straight from fridge is a bit too chilly!

goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 10:36

DS also tends to have room temp food. When you have three kids anything to make life a bit easier!

Neenz, do you cook the quinoa flakes? I don't think it can just be added to food like baby rice. I also use the four super grain porridge. I have also started giving DS the 7 month one with the added fruit and he likes that too. It's seems expensive but it lasts for ages.

Janus · 27/11/2008 10:37

Great thread! My 6.5 month old is on purees, we started about 3 weeks ago. She is going through food quite rapidly and we are up to 3 meals a day, something like this:

6.45am bf
7.45am breakfast, plum super porridge or apricot porridge or organix banana porridge or readybrek
9.30 ish nap
10/11 bf (depending on sleep)
12.30 ish lunch, chicken and veg or different variations of vegetable purees
2 ish bf followed by quick nap
5 ish tea, similar to lunch, maybe some toast and yogurt, mashed banana, etc
7 ish bf
11 ish bf
3am ish bf

Can I ask those of you who are bf, how often are you doing this, I'm wondering if I'm feeding too much, am trying to drop night feeds but dd3 is not too impressed!

Thanks, and especially to neenz!

goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 10:37

DS likes apples, I buy organic ones from waitrose and they are sweet.

goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 10:38

Janus DS bf's between each feed and about three times between bed and breakfast.

EllieG · 27/11/2008 10:39

Well done neenz - good idea for thread, I was exactly the same with DD. When started the BLW thing she licked foods or choked. And I couldn't cope with all the gagging so we did the puree thing.

She is mostly currently liking fish in cheese sauce with veg. And anything with avocado

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 10:40

hi janus - we've been on aother threads together havent we our dcs are exactly the same age and our days and food sound quite similar too - our bfs are listed above I think - we have only dropped the 10pm/11pm feed this week though, we are bfing:

7am
~10-11am
~2-3pm
~6.30-7pm

what have you tried so far with the night feeds?

hannahsaunt · 27/11/2008 10:53

I've always been a bit re BLW. Most of what we eat doesn't lend itself to BLW anyway. Ds3 is now 14mo and still likes his food not quite pureed but relatively mushed (though is quite capable of self feeding lumps of appropriate stuff e.g. banana, apple - still remember the poster who asked how to thicken porridge sufficiently to make it finger food for BLW...). As long as your baby is being fed, is happy, healthy etc go with how you feel. Ds3 is thriving on a very varied diet.

whinegums · 27/11/2008 11:11

Hi there, adding this to my threads - hi Neenz and others from June thread.

DS is 20 weeks, and we have been weaning for a couple of weeks - as per doc's recommendation as he has reflux. So far I've stuck to baby rice and fruit/veg combos, but am going to try him with some lentils and fish soon to up the protein content. I give him three solid meals a day and he loves them - his reflux and sleep have improved.

Phew, that is all a guilty confession on MN!!! Glad to get it off my chest.

Puree lovers unite!

Neenztwinz · 27/11/2008 11:30

I felt a bit trapped at first but now we are six weeks into it it is all coming a bit easier so hopefully things will improve FB in a while. I just heat stuff at other people's houses, not ventured out anywhwere public at feed time yet! I do get out for a walk for their 4.30 nap though.

G43, the health food shop said the quinoa flakes could be added to food straight from the packet. There are no cooking instructions on the packet. Perhaps I will try boiling them a bit and see if the DTs like them better.

Janus, I am BFing (DTs are 29 weeks) - I BF them at 7am, after lunch, 2.30pm, after tea and before bed. They are now sleeping 7-7

Tried avocado this morning, they were not impressed. Added banana to it, still not impressed, so I addded baby rice and milk and then eventually warmed up some peach pieces and mashed them in, and eventually they ate it!

OP posts:
Neenztwinz · 27/11/2008 11:32

Yes, it is important for lurkers to know the reasons why the DoH says 26 weeks for weaning - there are holes in the gut which close up some time between 17 and 26 weeks, it is different for every baby and there is no way of knowing when exactly your baby's gut is OK for solid food. Therefore it is safest to wait till 26 weeks.

OP posts:
goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 11:37

Neenz I looked in my book and it seems quinoa flakes need to be cooked for about 10 - 15 mins.

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 11:42

neenz my dd isnt that keen on the avocado either tho has just demolished loads of broc...weird...

gf3 normal quinoa is 10-15 so flakes should be shorter surely? where do you get the flakes anyway?am going to stick with the porridge and add that to veggies instead...

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 11:51

also can I just ask everyone what you do with sweet potato cos isnt it disgusting just boiled? so do you roast it with some olive oil and then mash it up? same question with squash really.

goingfor3 · 27/11/2008 12:25

giantkatestacks the quinoa was from a healthfood shop. In my book it's cooked in recipes rather than water so I gues when cooked with food it takes a little longer.

Bake sweet potato like a normal potato but not for as long.

giantkatestacks · 27/11/2008 12:27

gf3 - thanks for that...can you microwave them like a spud then?
