Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

So, I have my half tin of chickpeas all poised and ready and then I notice that on the ingredients it says "sulphites". I know these are a preservative but should I avoid giving them to DS or am I being overly neurtoic? Help!

Deanna1977 · 13/03/2009 08:55

Hi. I understand that sulphites are a common trigger for allergies. So I guess you just have to keep an eye on any reactions.

Talking of reactions - my LO has developed a runny bottom. So no more carrot...I think I'll just go back to Baby Rice for a while.

bitofadramaqueen · 13/03/2009 09:11

hi everyone, just marking my place really but on bananas ... My DS has them quite often but early on he did have a massive alien style vomit a couple of times. No idea why and it freaked me out but he was fine and has them no problem.

I googled sulphur before deciding whether to give him some dried apricots that had some sulphur in and it really put me off! I'm not particularly precious about that kind of thing but I'd really recommend looking into it before giving the chickpeas.

neenztwinz · 13/03/2009 18:20

Interesting about the sulphites... never heard of that before.

All is well here but it has taken so long to catch up I have no time to post! Bath time now so got to go.

Thanks Deanna and dramaqueen - think I will hold off on tinned chickpeas and investigate dried.

Thanks also Deanna for giving me chuckle of the week - your retort on a recent weaning thread:

Post: some people set it up [this pureeing thread] because they wanted to be able to talk about how to dismantle the annabel karmel food grinder without some well-meaning mner saying 'you know you don't have to do that, don't you?'

Deanna1977: Well I am glad that there is a seperate BLW thread now so that the lovely Mums can talk about how to cook porridge to the right consistency for finger food without some well meaning mner saying "you know you don't have to do that, don't you? Use a spoon!"

Hehehehe

neenztwinz · 13/03/2009 20:28

Ooh has it kicked off somewhere [looks for ruck]

bitofadramaqueen · 13/03/2009 20:39

I found out About sulphur on this thread I think. It's used in dried apricots to make them bright orange.

Funny post btw deanna.

potatoes · 14/03/2009 10:17

Thanks MKK for advice re suction bowl, yet another shopping trip hurrah!

Speaking to friends about weaning the other day, they are all starting pretty well at 16/17 weeks, but double at friend of a friend who weaned all 3 of her DCs at 3 months!!!

katherine2008 · 14/03/2009 15:42

hi all, couple of quickies - I noticed from earlier on this thread that Yeo Valley is a good way of introducing yoghurt - I've tracked down a full fat organic version, but it's a probiotic - is that ok? Also, we haven't started on protein yet - but have made chicken and veg for the freezer and aim to try next week - what can I expect? Being bunged up?... again..

neenztwinz · 14/03/2009 16:28

Hi Katherine, I use Yeo Valley and it is fine. All yogurt is probiotic I think, that is how it becomes yogurt ie the bacteria in it and it is good bacteria. I add a little of Hipp Organic puree fruit jars to my natural yogurt cos they didn;t like it too much on its own.

Chicken and veg sounds great - shouldn't be a problem!

katherine2008 · 14/03/2009 17:23

thank you for that advice, very appreciated, will report back!

artifarti · 14/03/2009 17:26

Katherine - we are also starting chicken next week so we can compare poo action!

katherine2008 · 14/03/2009 17:30

hoorah, looking forward to it - i made AK's one-pot chicken earlier and it tastes gorgeous, if I say so myself!!

potatoes · 14/03/2009 20:14

Hi katherine and artifarti, my DS had chicken for the first time this week and i must admit it was the first real test of my cloth nappies - can't think how best to describe it..."slow digestive transit for 2 days followed by super fast turbo-charged explosive digestive transit" maybe. But back to normal now. Just cross your fingers you're at home when everything speeds up as complete outfit change was necessary

katherine2008 · 15/03/2009 19:19

thank you potatoes - i shall be extra careful to fasten those nappies properly this week and carry an extra set of clothes at all time!! we had sweetcorn for the first time today - pureed with carrot and sweet potato and she has been sick on and off most of the afternoon! I didn't mouli it as
a) I don't have a mouli
b) Annabel Karmel says if it's frozen then puree it...
anyway, we'll give it a week before we try again (grrrr, 7 more portions in the freezer taking up room!!)

giantkatestacks · 15/03/2009 19:54

sweetcorn is a weird first one - is that AK? (I dont know anything about her recipes sorry) I only say so because sweetcorn is very high in fibre so a bit hard on their digestion...

artifarti · 15/03/2009 20:18

AK is a bit inconsistent with her do mouli/don't mouli things. I pushed peas through a sieve (yawn, it will be a while before he has peas again) but haven't tried sweetcorn yet.

Well, I concocted a cod and spinach sludge pie today, so we'll see how that goes down tomorrow.

One thing - how do I know how much he should be having? DS is a bit of a piglet and would just keep on eating but I am drawing the line at 6-8 ice cubes at the moment.

Deanna1977 · 15/03/2009 20:43

Waves to all. (cheers Artifarti & BOADQ for nice words!)

Given up weaning completely for a few days as DS has still got runny bot. Could be teething....I just don't know. He had it for a while & then it cleared up so I thought I should start him on solids. Has anyone tried weaning during teething? Probably a recipe for disaster (excuse the pun).

bitofadramaqueen · 15/03/2009 21:27

Deanna I started weaning my DS around the time his first tooth came through and he was fine. However, others have said that their LO's go off food. My DS's nappies changed a lot (and still change) when I started weaning so any major changes are necessarily a bad thing.

Mouli - dont There's really no need unless you think you'd use it longer term. I haven't and DS has had peas etc without any problems.

Portions artifarti - there's no definitive answer unfortunately! I just gradually increased the amounts until I got to what seemed like a good portion size. Once I got past the first tastes I just started freezing whole portions in pots - I hated all that pushing the ice cube trays out!

The plum yoghurts are pretty tasty btw and come in really handy small sizes.

Re: early weaning potatoes - I think people often get the 'you were weaned/I weaned X at... etc and they're fine'. I think there's a general ignorance about more recent research and why it helps to leave weaning till nearer 26 weeks. I personally thought weaning would just be more to do so was happy to put it off as long as possible. I'm not criticising anyone who's decided to wean early for whatever reason btw, just passing on my general musings on the subject.

Some recent food things here... we were having roast chicken so whizzed up some of that with some veg but it was a bit dry so added a spoonful of pesto - very tasty! We also tore up a yorky pud for him which went down well.

Bit of multi-tasking yesterday too... We were having some root veg mash instead of normal mash because we thought that would be a bit more nutritious for DS's tea, and we steamed some veg over the top of the pan at the same time so had some finger food too. Ok, ok, I know that's pretty basic to most people but you've got to remember that I'd never cooked in my life before DS came along!

katherine2008 · 16/03/2009 10:15

Drama Queen, woweee!!!!! my dd has been weaning for nearly 4 weeks and is nearly 28 weeks and we have six icecubes (or equivalent) at lunch plus a little bit of yoghurt - and at tea time we are having six tsps of baby rice with 2 fruit or veg puree plus a little yoghurt - although that will change with the intro of protein this week. she still has a little milk before her lunch (about 3oz).

When did you guys start finger food and is veg or toast the best to start with?

Re Peas/Sweetcorn - obviously you know the problems I had with corn yesterday (!!) but we didn't have a problem with peas at all - she loves them too and we have only ever pureed! My worst pureeing experience was sieving sweet potato through a sieve (thank you Gina Ford) - by arm was nearly crippled by the end. we didn't do that again!

oh and Deanna, we tried weaning at around 4 and a half months and it was a disaster, so we waited another four weeks and tried again... with success. so there is light etc....

bitofadramaqueen · 16/03/2009 16:54

I started finger foods fairly quickly I think - before 7 months. Toast, bits of banana, rice cakes. He's 8 months now and has little sandwiches, raisins (new development), fruit and veg, those organic stick things. Once they're 6 months the sooner you introduce texture and finger foods the better IMO. I stopped blending and started mashing or whizzing with the chopper blade quite quickly. I've maybe been lucky but ds has never refused anything. I never really did the mixing stuff with baby rice or milk except maybe the first couple of days.

katherine2008 · 16/03/2009 17:02

we will try finger foods soon then - can't wait! we are mashing banana now - will try whizzing instead with our next excursion into the AK cookbook! guess Finger foods are just an addition to their normal meal?

neenztwinz · 16/03/2009 17:36

My two are best with toast and rice cakes as finger food - I put marmite or soft cheese on. Never had much success with carrot sticks or other veg batons, they do like apple though (didn't give them that raw till 10mo tho)

Slices of ripe pear are good although slippery and mine does like broccoli and big chunks of mash/boiled potatoes. In fact mine will eat anything tsk. This afternoon she had a go at a doorstop.

Maria2007 · 16/03/2009 20:01

.....Yawn.......

Am so so so tired. So this will be very quick. Just to say hi to everyone really, & I'll be back soon with ideas about finger foods etc. Hugs to everyone!
