General chat thread for puree lovers!

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Wow am so whinegums - where are you staying? I love the tapas in madrid sooo much - I love that little chain of patatas bravas places...

BA were very good when we flew with them and the baby - I had trouble bf on takeoff and landing with dds lapbelt attached to mine but that was cos we werent used to feeding in the position (sitting facing me).

wahwah1270 · 10/03/2009 21:57

Im VERY [ENVY] whinegums. We got back last Mnoday and it seems like forever ago. You can always buy food etc for the baby in the fruit veg aisle of the supermercado? That's what i did, oh an d chucking jamon iberico at nina went down well, oh and bits of bread and the like. Dont stress too much about the pots. BA are really great btw - a big help, not vsure re terminal changeover but they let us take the bugaboo to the gate. disfruta

whinegums · 10/03/2009 22:33

Hey wahwah, was looking for you a few days ago, you posted on the thread I started about Madrid the other week.

Kate - we're staying just off Gran Via, super central, and should be able to walk to most of the places we want to go. I haven't been to Madrid before so v excited.

Yeah, I could buy stuff over there, but I thought I may as well take it as we're only going for a few days, and I don't want to waste time in the supermarkets if I can help it - would rather be looking at Goyas than jars!

wahwah1270 · 11/03/2009 10:19

hi whineums let me know if you want any info. have fun.

wahwah1270 · 11/03/2009 12:04

i have posted more on your thread.

artifarti · 11/03/2009 13:55

I was browsing the net for chickpea inspiration when I came across something that recommended no spinach until 12 months - but neglected to say why. What's that all about then? I know some people are funny about the nightshade family but spinach?! Surely it's a great iron-rich veg for babies (and DS had it for lunch and hasn't keeled over yet). Anyone else ever heard this?

First Weetabix this morning - a surprising success although I think I might have to scour him later to fully remove concrete remnants! (previously Arthymum)

potatoes · 11/03/2009 14:04

HURRAY HURRAY DS has eaten veg again! Tried the 'chicken for sweet-toothers' recipe from the recipe section and he ate loads! Just chicken, dried apricots, sweet potato and carrot. First time he has had meat so I'm not looking forward to the nappies.

Don't know what's wrong with spinach, everywhere I've seen has suggested it as a good food as it's got loads of iron. Might even try it with DS (mixed with apricots of course!)

giantkatestacks · 11/03/2009 14:24

Maybe the spinach thing is because of the amount of fibre so could bung them up like bananas sometimes does? [looks unsure]

whinegums · 11/03/2009 15:37

Thank you wahwah! Can't wait!

Arti - it may be because spinach isn't actually digested very well by babies (as evidenced by DS's nappies afterwards!). I want him to get used to the tastes of 'strong' veggies, so I give him it anyway - the frozen stuff is great, it's in perfect cube portion size. Haven't heard anywhere not to give it though.

mookickkick · 11/03/2009 15:47

first i've heard of a spinach thing! dd had salmon and spinach (plum pot) without any obvious trouble.

very good news about the chicken, potatoes!

artifarti - i make a chicken and chickpea stew with lentils and couscous flavoured with cinnamon and ginger. dd loves it! haven't tried the really strong stuff like whinegums though. well done!

dd is teething at the mo. at least, that is what i think it is. chews everything, won't nap properly and shrieked all night (until the nurofen, [evil laugh]). the gums don't look red though -- do they always?

mookickkick · 11/03/2009 15:49

oh, and whinegums - we found avocados and bananas to be our friends while travelling. instant baby food. have fun in spain!

Habbibu · 11/03/2009 19:26

penne is a bit of a bugger for self-feeding at the start. Fusilli much better, or best, if you can find it, is spirali.

Maria2007 · 11/03/2009 20:33

Thanks Habbibu for the tip about fussili. Will definitely keep it in mind. What's spirali btw?

Habbibu · 11/03/2009 20:40

Spirali is spiral shaped pasta - perfect for little hands to grip - looks like this. I bought it in Sainsbury's, I think.

Deanna1977 · 11/03/2009 21:31

Hi all. I have just started LO on baby rice for the last 3 days. I am giving him about 1-2 teaspoons once a day for breakfast. It has gone down really well. Today I gave him rice and then decided to give him the tiniest bit of banana mashed to a fine puree mixed with ff. This was about 10am. Now this afternoon (about 4.30) he was a little sick after his milk feed (not much - v small amount, about an hour after his milk feed). Now he is rarely sick - I can count on one hand the times he has thrown up. Could this have been the banana (delayed reaction) or was it just one of those things (I was jiggling him on my knee at the time!). Any advice? Was thinking of giving him some carrot for breakfast - would this be OK?

giantkatestacks · 11/03/2009 22:02

Deanna - I dont really think that banana is the best food to give them first (even leaving aside the sick it tends to bung them up a bit) - can you get hold of some ripe pears and poach them and whizz them up instead? carrot is better than banana as well imo.

I would go slowly too and only do one thing every few days if you can bear to.

Deanna1977 · 11/03/2009 22:19

Thanks GKateS. I will go with carrot for a couple of days & take things slowly. I will try and get hold of some pears too. Cheers.

potatoes · 12/03/2009 10:20

Morning all, quick question for those with older DCs - my DS tries to feed himself (well, if i put food on a spoon and give him the spoon he gets some in his hair, some on his clothes, some on my clothes, flicks some onto the floor and gets a bit in his mouth ). Now he's started grabbing the bowl, chomping on the rim and vaguely aiming the spoon in the general direction of the food to try and get some more, but the bowl usually ends up skidding across the table or being waved around above his head. How can I make it easier for him to feed himself?

katherine2008 · 12/03/2009 10:25

i gave dd banana about 2 weeks into weaning and it made her v sick and gave her a very runny bottom! tried again 10 days later and it is now a firm favourite! but as the others have said, the best first tastes are apple, pear and carrot. have fun!!!

Maria2007 · 12/03/2009 10:33

Deanna, welcome to the thread!

Exciting times, starting to wean your LO... I would agree with the others though. Banana is definitely not the best food to start with. Pear is much much better, more mild & easily digested. I would personally wait even about a month to give banana (the same goes for avocado, also hard to digest food).

Also, I would start (if I were you) with only very tiny quantities of carrot, because it made my DS hyper when I first gave it- gave him far too much in one go!- & so I'm almost a bit supersticious about carrot.

artifarti · 12/03/2009 13:57

Hi Deanna - bananas bunged my DS up good and proper, I still haven't dared try them again five weeks in! Carrot is good but a very strong taste (especially organic ones, which my DP hates as they "taste carroty" ) - we tried them first and nearly put DS off food for life! But mixed in with milk and baby rice they should be good to go. Agree with everyone else - pear is definitely a winner.

Mookickkick - loving the sound of your chicken and chickpea dish. Am introducing chicken next week so will add that to my menu. DP and I eat a lot of strong flavours so I like the idea of introducing (mild) spices. In fact, DS is about to have sweet potato, turnip and cinnamon; sounds disgusting, tastes quite nice.

mookickkick · 12/03/2009 14:37

Good for your ds potatoes! We have a bowl with a suction cup on the bottom. Sticks fast to the tray so little hands can't move it. The Baby Bjorn bowl is also difficult to lift as it has curved edges.

Deanna - I only gave veg for the first two weeks, mean mummy that I am. Root veg like squash, sweet potato, swede, carrot all went down very well.

mookickkick · 12/03/2009 14:39

Artifarti - cinnamon is a huge hit over here! I'm thinking about baking some cinnamon and raison bread. Sort of the last hurrah before I go back to work...

Deanna1977 · 12/03/2009 17:12

Hi ladies. Thanks for your advice. Carrot was on the menu today & it didn't go down as well as rice (even though I mixed it with milk) .I don't think much went down at all! Not that it matters - its just getting him used to textures & tastes. I will try again tomorrow. May mix in a little rice (thanks for the tip artifarti). I think I will try a different veg/fruit every 2 days & see how that goes. I have bought some pears today so I'll try that in a few days. I have a freezer full of ice cube veg ( swede, carrot, squash, parsnip & potatoes) & some apple. I will avoid banana for a bit & although I was going to try him with avocado soon I will wait a while for that too. (thanks Maria)

BTW I love this thread! I need to read the whole thing though. Lots of great tips on here.

Mookickkcik. Love cinamon & raisin bread. I think I might make some tonight. Will cheat & use a breadmaker though!

lou222 · 12/03/2009 18:31
