Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

thanks arthymum - crikey, hadn't thought about that! (I assumed veg / fruit would be fine!). Will heat up thoroughly from now on. I hope you're OK - I've been lurking on your sleep thread. I should join as we're still on one / two wakings per night but as that's loads better than it was a month ago I'm somehow feeling positive about it - but that said he woke three times last night. Fingers crossed it's not all going backwards again...

giantkatestacks · 09/03/2009 16:03

As well as the lack of protein the jars all taste very sweet so I thought that was why dcs normally express a preference for them.

arthymum · 09/03/2009 17:34

Well, the doctor doesn't think the rash is anything too significant but says to withdraw dairy for a fortnight and then reintroduce it just to be on the safe side. And I had just bought some over-priced fromage frais as his intro to yoghurt! Now I will have to eat them all myself, hehehe... [licking lips greedily emoticon]

averagemum - hope nights continue to improve for you. If not, you know where we are...

No I've never made stock. I think some food at room temp is probably OK - and a good thing if your DC will eat it cold cos it helps when out and about.

giantkatestacks · 09/03/2009 18:11

Yep we have never made stock either - we just use water - you're boiling the chicken/lamd/lentils and veg to death anyway so it makes a pretty good stock on its own I reckon.

arthymum - have I mentioned my obsession with plain natural yoghurt? once you start them on the admittedly lovely fromage frais then they wont go back but if you start them off on the plain then they wont know any different iyswim - its like juice and water.

potatoes · 09/03/2009 19:17

Re: stock - apparently Boots do salt-free stock in their baby food range, I'm going to go soup-tastic in our house as fussy veg-hating DS scoffed loads of home-made soup at a friend's house the other day. Lots of nice soup recipes in the recipe section to tempt DS (and maybe even DH who is allergic to anything too healthy ).

giantkatestacks · 09/03/2009 19:22

Yeah Boots do sell it but stock is really just a load of celery/leeks/carrot etc boiled up though isnt it - plus some herbs if you're going all fancy (neenz you are excused from the herbs part ) - then you can just freeze it if you really want to - not worth buying really...

potatoes · 09/03/2009 19:26

Yeah but TBH I cannot see myself ever being bothered to boil up a load of veg and herbs and freezing them in DS-size portions as well as everything else so if it can be bought then happy days

arthymum · 09/03/2009 19:28

Giant - thanks for tip on plain yoghurt. You are right, if I start off spoiling the little beast, they'll be no end to it. I was thinking plain yoghurt might be a bit tart but I guess I'll be adding fruit mush to it anyway. Does everyone always use fresh/frozen fruit for pureeing or are tins a good bet too (if no sugar or nasties)?

Maria2007 · 09/03/2009 19:39

Arthymum, I agree with GKS, I do the same with natural yoghurt and greek yoghurt. I just give it plain, sometimes after supper, without fruit. DS has learnt to love it!! He pulls an extremely funny face when the first spoonful goes into his mouth, but then gobbles it all up!

OK girls, here's my schedule at the moment (food wise). Let me know if it sounds right (or right-ish).

Breakfast: 2 tablespoons porridge with EBM & 1 cube fruit

Lunch: 5-6 cubes protein based meal (e.g. chicken casserole, lentils with veg etc). After the meal- IF DS eats it relatively well- I offer 2 cubes fruit

Supper: 5-6 cubes carb & veg meal e.g. carb & veg based soups, sweet potato & other root veg with a bit of mild cheddar etc. After supper (again, provided that DS has eaten well) I offer plain yoghurt. No fruit.

How does it sound? He's been eating really well recently btw. So the not-eating phase is, I think, behind us.

katherine2008 · 09/03/2009 19:46

thanks for the stock tips - maybe I'll try making it again - I am Nigella, I am Nigella.... re heating up frozen puree - yeeks - I have just defrosted and then warmed in microwave. Is that not ok?....

arthymum · 09/03/2009 19:52

Microwave is fine too - although I think it destroys more of the nutrients than pan-cooking.

giantkatestacks · 09/03/2009 20:31

I know potatoes - thats why I dont make it either - I just make casserole with water instead

And Katherine - I defrost my cubes in the microwave - its not optimal but hey ho...

Maria - so pleased its back on track - well done... hows the finger food going as well?

Maria2007 · 09/03/2009 21:22

I use the microwave as well (she even uses it for EBM, she whispers guiltily).

GKS finger food is going slowly. I steamed some mixed veg yesterday to offer with supper. In the end forgot to give it! Have successfully given rice-cakes though. Am also planning to give some boiled pasta pieces e.g. penne.

giantkatestacks · 09/03/2009 21:36

I just cook too many green beans/peas/broc etc when we are having some and then keep it in the fridge and offer it with lunch cold the next day.

We struggled with penne btw Maria and we are a couple of months older - mine finds spaghetti easier if you really want to do pasta.

potatoes · 10/03/2009 10:13

Maria I'm very impressed by your DS's eating!

katherine2008 · 10/03/2009 12:48

another question - am looking at the fish recipe in Annabel Karmel and wondering if I can buy frozen fish or only use fresh - if I use frozen I guess I can't refreeze (and I'm looking at a Supermarket frozen one - not fish I have bought and frozen myself...) thank you!!

giantkatestacks · 10/03/2009 13:18

katherine - I dont know about the AK recipes but I use cheap frozen white fish (in bags in the freezer section) to make a fish pie - see up the thread (its not really a fish pie but its poached then whizzed and combined with a couple of cubes of mash) and then I refreeze the fish in portions and its fine.

katherine2008 · 10/03/2009 14:27

great - hurrah!

Maria2007 · 10/03/2009 19:24

Katherine, I'm sure frozen fish is fine, as long (as with other things) as it's good enough quality...

katherine2008 · 10/03/2009 19:29

Tesco finest don't ya know!! only the best for the princess!!!

mookickkick · 10/03/2009 19:36

wow maria, your ds is a fab eater! dd ate well today. hoovered her tuna pasta bake - don't know which recipe you're planning katherine, but this is super easy: cook your pasta with peas and corn, or whatever veg you have to hand, make a white sauce, add cheese and mix the whole lot together. same sauce as for cauliflower or macaroni cheese in fact. her tummy is totally bulging. afraid i'm going to mention (poo): twice she's had 6 in one day! yet today only 2. i'm a bit concerned that she'll erupt in the night.

katherine2008 · 10/03/2009 19:56

we haven't done pasta or cheese yet - all these exciting things to come next week!! recipe sounds fab though! i'm glad I'm not the only one who worries about the nighttime poo! will it wake her... will it wipe out her grobag!!!

whinegums · 10/03/2009 21:16

Hi everyone, just marking my place. Everything fine here on the food front. We're off to Madrid on Sunday for a few days, so it will be interesting to see how we get on. I'm taking a few Plum pots and those new Ella's Kitchen pouches - the fish pie and chicken casserole have gone down well so far - otherwise we'll be chucking tapas at the nino and see how he gets on!

Any travel tips are welcome btw. We're flying BA via Heathrow and we have to change from T5 to T3 - anyone done that before, and we will be able to get our buggy back during the connection?

He does like to try whatever we're having, and seems to like strong tastes best - smoked salmon, garlic bread, mature cheese etc. I made a beef casserole with red wine, anchovies, garlic, herbs etc the other week, and I didn't think he'd like it - how wrong I was!

Mookickkick - what a lot of poo!!! We have the odd day like that, when it feels like I'm constantly changing him. Yuk. The worst was post prunes.... Won't be doing that again in a hurry.

I use the microwave to reheat food too - I think if you're scrupulous when you're preparing it - storage containers freshly cleaned and rinsed in very hot water, chill it as fast as possible, into the freezer, and not hanging around once defrosted - then it's ok not to frazzle it on reheating. In other words, if there's no bugs when it goes into the freezer, there won't be any when it comes out either.
