General chat thread for puree lovers!

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

Hi again girls,

OK, have fbooked many of you! Hope I'll not get confused with all the names & nicknames Soon I'll start remember who's who... for now, please indulge me!

The link you've sent is interesting Neenz. Am generally very interested in reading BLW-related research.

Right. Since this is the puree thread, back to pureeing news . Today we had a bit of a pureeing disaster. I gave DS carrot puree for lunch (mixed with EBM & baby rice, to make it more palatable... although now that I think of it, carrot & EBM.....uuuuuggggghhhhh) Anyway, he gobbled it all up, as he does (so far / touch wood). BUT THEN: he became as hyper as he's ever been! Would NOT go down for his lunchtime nap (let alone his afternoon nap), was constantly on a high until bedtime. Exhausting. And since he's been in bed at 6.45 he's woken up at least 5 times (asking for his dummy). Could this be related to the carrot???? Carrot seems innocent enough but I've heard that in some kids it can actually have this effect. So tomorrow it's courgette for us, because, I ask you, HOW hyper can a kid get when eating courgette?

Maria2007 · 19/01/2009 21:06

(well I meant to say 'soon I'll start remembering who's who... for now please put up with me, or something like that... what I wrote is something else. That's tiredness for you!)

neenztwinz · 19/01/2009 21:42

Mmm, I'd hope not very hyper Maria! That is totally mad with the carrot!

I have given up on DD, she seems to want to do blw . Well she will let me spoon feed her oatibix and yogurt but any of the mains I make (today was 'popeye pasta' - long story) she refuses to open her mouth. But she will eat toast and rice cakes so I put the popeye pasta on some bread and she had a go. Didn;t get much down. I normally get really stressed thinking they won't sleep if they don't eat but I am going to try not getting worked up about it and just see how she goes. She is still only 16lb (at 8.5m!) so prob doesn't need much. We will see!

I listened to the debate on WH with DH, and found it v. interesting, but AK came out of it better, I thought. But possibly because I'm totally unconvinced by pure BLW for my baby and I get really annoyed about the sanctimonious attitude of BLW folk - the cool club.

DS defnintely doesn't suck food off the spoon. And he swallows - doesn't need to chew for that!

With the breakfast debate, my main issue is timing. The nursery has quite a strict timetable so breakfast is at 8.45. Not wishing to brag (again) but DS doesn't wake until 8 (or had to be woken at 8.30 this morning! ) so 8.45 is a challenge. Well, I'd be in pjs! I think we'll persevere with teensy amounts of yoghurt or whatever at the mo but not panic too much. Besides he took 100ml of ebm at nursery today and nursery have requested...more ebm tomorrow!!

Whinegums last night you were roughly where we were at last week: DS goes to bed at 8pm, then sleeps till about 11.30 when he gets a feed; then (now!) wakes once in the night. If we're lucky. My main worry is if he wakes several times when DH is away, I'll just cave and feed him. Have I got the right person - is your DH away too, in Russia recently?

pudding25 · 19/01/2009 22:34

Carrot is the cocaine...

What is popeye pasta? Sounds interesting.

Essie, would nursery not just bung him a couple of rice cakes or something when he gets there?

Essie3 · 19/01/2009 22:45

Good point. Or cold toast.
Lunch at nursery is around 11.39.

Essie3 · 19/01/2009 22:46

No, it isn't. It's around 11.30 - they're not that tied to the clock! LOL

Maria2007 · 20/01/2009 08:12

Morning girls!

Right, about to rush to dentist (what fun... ) so just a quick hello. Pudding, do you really think carrot was the culprit of yesterday's hyperactivity?? Seems very strange to me, as I always thought of carrot as an ultra innocent food ... but to a baby it may very well be cocaine. So no carrots for us for a couple of weeks.

Got to run. Speak soon!

whinegums · 20/01/2009 09:47

Morning! Maria, that is mad about carrot, hopefully he was just soooo excited by puree eh?? Hope you get on ok at the dentist, from my name you might guess I'm not so good with all things dental!

Essie, yes, it was my DP who was in Russia, he got back last week. Last night we went til about 10pm, but DS hadn't taken much at his 7pm bedtime feed, so I went with it. Another two feeds in the night, and a few (very short thankfully) wakings apart from that. So, we will persevere...

That's great that nursery are getting the EBM into Iestyn.

Right, must crack on - waves spoon at everyone else.

bitofadramaqueen · 20/01/2009 09:49

Hey Maria,

When you next give carrot, maybe give it on its own and make sure that you dont give anything else new that day so you get a true picture of whether theres a real reaction to it.

Good luck at the dentist!

giantkatestacks · 20/01/2009 09:49

that is strange about the carrot - my dd loves courgette - I fry it up very gently in olive oil first and then whizz it up - just boiled/steamed its a little bit grim...and the oil is supposed to help with the vitamins as well.

pudding25 · 20/01/2009 09:57

I used to eat too many carrots and my mum told me I was going orange..Have you tried swede. It is lovely. I kept finished DD's.

Hope the dentist goes well.

Does anyone know what I should do about eggs? DD is just over 8mths now and I really want to give her eggs but not sure if I should? She's got a cold and refused any breakfast for the dirst time ever this morning.

giantkatestacks · 20/01/2009 10:24

dont ask me about eggs - I tried an omelette a couple of weeks ago at 8mths and we had a reaction - not proper swelling etc but she woke up during the evening with an upset stomach - not trying it again now til a year...I should have just done the yolks - its the whites that are the problem apparently.

I would give it a go but do it at lunch - therefore if it goes badly it wont affect their sleep...

DebInAustria · 20/01/2009 10:40

Maria - it might have been something in your breastmilk instead of the carrot. Hope dentist goes OK.

Pudding, ds2 couldn't tolerate eggs until he was about 3 yrs, they made him sick. So I tested ds3 already! I tried him with a tiny amount of hard boiled chopped up egg in some veg I knew he was OK with and no effect so far, he;s just 7 months.

Essie3 · 20/01/2009 10:58

Not going on that other nasty thread again! I don't want to play with those mean girls who do BLW.

mookickkick · 20/01/2009 15:01

Hello all! We just had carrot mixed with rice. It's one of DD's favourite meals. In fact, there was none left for me . Never noticed any (extra) hyperactivity though. She didn't like courgette, so I'll try to fry them as giantkatestacks suggests - thanks for that!

By the way, thanks to all who replied to my second meal question. I went for tea as I am too zombified in the mornings. Can't say I've noticed an improvement in her sleep. Had to get up twice last night.

Maria2007 · 20/01/2009 15:40

Hi again girls,

Dentist was not nice (although effective, as I now am happy to say I've got a front tooth again )... but courgette worked beautifully for lunch, DS loved it & then had a nice long almost-2-hour lunchtime nap; no hyperactivity with courgette, thank you very much

In the end what I'm assuming happened is that I gave him too much carrot all at once (this was only his 3rd weaning food after all) & his insulin levels probably rocketed sky high poor thing

giantkatestacks · 20/01/2009 18:12

well done for being so brave maria...

good news about the courgette as well - swede went down well here too as did broccoli surprisingly

Maria2007 · 20/01/2009 21:47

swede? broccoli? courgette? Well our babies certainly haven't yet discovered the good things in life, if they're getting excited by these things...

giantkatestacks · 20/01/2009 21:54

just you wait - mine gets hysterical about liver of all things...

robbiesbiggestfan · 20/01/2009 22:14

Oooo liver? Or should that be eewww liver?! Found an Annabel Karmel recipe with chicken livers....is that the one you mean giantkatestacks? (great name by the way!)

pudding25 · 20/01/2009 22:20

Liver -yuk. DD refused most of her dinner but did get very excited when she saw the packet of rice cakes come out...

Ok, going to try some egg this week (but just the yolk).

Maria2007 · 20/01/2009 22:21

liver? LIVER?
Anyway, I suppose all is possible after I saw my boy getting really excited & smiley when he tasted his first ever courgette (so NOT exciting). Aaaawwww, he was cute though... got all green bits in his hair!

Maria2007 · 20/01/2009 22:21

giantkatestacks · 20/01/2009 22:51

its not that bad - its my fave meal - liver and bacon and onions...I just cut it into really thin strips and flour it and fry it for a minute each side so its still pink in the middle. DD absolutely loves it - she picks up a strip and does a sort of dance - am going to tape it next time

thanks robbie - I dont get on with AK as am far too lazy to cook complicated things. And of course my dd is now approaching 9 months and so is having one meal of finger foods a day and two meals of mashed stuff (she had potato and carrot rosti alongside it). It would be worth it though as its chock full of good stuff - if you can face cooking it of course
