General chat thread for puree lovers!

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

On AK recipes, I made the 'lovely lentils' last night. Accidentally put too much stock in so it was a smoother puree than I planned but it actually makes a lovely lentil soup! So have put some aside for me with some extra stock and seasoning and having it for lunch today. I made it with home made chicken stock if anyone is going to try it.

Oops. I didnt do that, DS did

giantkatestacks · 21/01/2009 10:43

I did that the other day - overcooked some lentil casserole and it turned into a soup - dp just added some spices and took it to work the next day as dhal [makes note to self to use kitchen timer more often]

neenztwinz · 21/01/2009 13:21

Loving the puree chat.

Essie, I am so glad they managed to get DS to take a bottle! That is great news. Re. sleeping through, have you tried Oatibix . Ha ha, only kidding, but I do give the DTs Oatibix every night as a dessert . It needs loads of milk so that's got to be good and its very filling.

hi, i feel like i am finally making a breakthrough with solids, dd happily ate some creamy poridge today. i cant tell you how relieved i am. thanks all for your tips.

neenztwinz · 21/01/2009 15:43

That's great wahwah. I am having some success with food that does not contain (very much) sweet potato. Today was haricot beans, spinach and a little sweet potato.

They hated it, so I got some yogurt and gave them one spoon yogurt then one spoon beans/spinach and they ate loads of it. Cunning plan that, my mum says she used to do it with us .

Neenz - are Oatibix made by the medised manufacturers?

Weaning going much better again here everyone - thanks for advice/support/encouragement at the weekend.

I've been looking at other proper cereals, and was amazed to discover that ready brek is actually just fine porridge . To be fair, I hated all that stuff when I was a kid - I always liked cornflakes, rice crispies etc.

Anyway, back to the cereals... trying to look for a cereal that isn't oats based so he gets a change. Weetabix? Or something else suitable for his age 6/7 months.

mookickkick · 21/01/2009 19:29

That's great wahwah! Over here pea puree is a hit. DD even likes it with broccoli

tassisssss · 21/01/2009 19:33

Hi girls!
I do weetabix mixed with pureed fruit. Dd seems to like it.
Tonights tea was my own lovely combination (step aside Ms Karmel) of potato, leek, milk and lots of cheese. Goes a slightly funny consistency when frozen, but my LOs have loved it.
Neenz, I do that one spoon savoury one spoon yogurt trick too!

tassisssss · 21/01/2009 19:35

and for tea tonight the rest of us had a gammon joint thingy, mash and brocolli and there's leftovers of all 3...do you reckon I can puree this for dd? I've not done gammon/ham of this type at this stage before, but don't see why not...

bitofadramaqueen · 21/01/2009 19:45

Was the gammon joint particularly salty? Only thing that may be an issue tassisssss.

tassisssss · 21/01/2009 19:47

yes I wondered about that...didn't seem specially so...might just use a tiny bit to flavour the rest?

Maria2007 · 21/01/2009 20:49

So, there's a BLW thread going on at the moment where the lovely expression 'shovelling (food) down her gob' is mentioned. Is it just me or are such expressions really really annoying? My DS lurches forward & opens his mouth wide when there's a spoon in sight (somewhere in the horizon). There's no shovelling in anyone's gob going on in our household, I couldn't (he's far too independent!) & I wouldn't (I don't think it's right at all to force-feed, under ANY circumstances).

Maria2007 · 21/01/2009 20:51

BTW was re-reading parts of the BLW book again today, & I was thinking I'm going to try sitting my DS & offering some finger foods just for him to play while I'm giving him the puree (once my high chair is delivered, hopefully tomorrow). What do you think?

Also. I find that my DS wants to eat his puree FAR too quickly, he literally can't wait for the next mouthful & grabs the spoon from my hand & wants to self-feed as quickly as possible! How do I help him become a little bit more.....errrr, patient?

tassisssss · 21/01/2009 20:58

maria, i shovel into my wee one as much as she'll take...how do you think our BLW friends would react to the using yogurt to make them take more savoury mush?!

As for letting them play with finger food that's what we do. So tonight dd sat and had her mush (served by daddy) while I finished making tea and then chomped on a brocolli floret while we had ours. I often give her a bit of bread to chomp while we eat lunch. (very messy though!)

robbiesbiggestfan · 21/01/2009 21:14

I do actually quite like liver kate but had never thought of it as a weaning idea. Was going to try the AK idea mainly cos chicken livers are only about 50p to buy! so helps with credit crunch too
Funnily enough I mentioned to DH about having liver with bacon and onions and mash (salivating emoticon) this weekend so may try your idea too.
Have bought the ingredients for the lovely lentils recipe so will be careful with the adding of the stock!
Never thought of giving breakfast for pudding IYSWIM, guess that if it's been a bad day milk intake wise it's a fab idea.
Well done wah wah with your success.
I do exactly the same tassisssss (right amount of sssss?? ). My youngest DS is almost ready for bed at the mo when the rest of the family eat so usually give him something to chomp on like broccoli bits, other veg or breadstick. BUT is that classed as finger food or BLW I ask
Great thread......lovin it lovin it lovin it!

tassisssss · 21/01/2009 21:25

RBF - that's finger food for sure (according to the BLWers you can't do both!)

So no other thought on whether or not I'm mushing this gammon?

robbiesbiggestfan · 21/01/2009 21:49

Tassisssss I would just go for it. I look at salt content obviously but if it's as a one off I would just try your DD with it, especially as you didn't think it was too bad.
Or mush the veg and give it to her as finger food at same time even if she just sucks on it she'll get a taste and you'll know if she likes it or not for next time?

giantkatestacks · 22/01/2009 08:25

rbf - re the liver - its only cos its such a soft meat - if you slice it really thinly (so you end up with batons) and then fry it for literally a minute each side then its really soft and doesnt really need much chewing - gumming will do it...less of a choking risk as well.

If I'm going to be honest I dont like the idea of shovelling food either - my dd is mostly very happy to eat mush or finger food and if she isnt then we just dont keep trying - we just get down and do something else.

neenztwinz · 22/01/2009 09:45

LOL BDQ, I do have my favourites and Medised and Oatibix are front-runners at the mo!

I'd say yes to the gammon but not too much.. 1oz/30g is plenty.

On the breakfasts front, you can get quinoa porridge (I think it is Ella's Kitchen but not sure). Quinoa is a real superfood, a fab source of protein. I mix a bit in with oats for porridge cos they won't eat it on its own.

Maria2007 · 22/01/2009 10:19

well of course I also don't like the idea of shovelling food! In fact, I hate the idea of shovelling food, but I also get annoyed with the assumption that all puree-feeders are 'shovelling food into babies' gobs'I don't like the terminology & the underyling assumptions, if you see what I mean. As if puree feeding=shovelling / force feeding.

neenztwinz · 22/01/2009 10:30

Which thread is this Maria? I think some BLWers are just very sanctimonious about BLW and they believe it is better for their babies and that they are doing better for their babies than we are. That is up to them. We do what we (and 99% of the general population) think is best, so best to just ignore them.
