General chat thread for puree lovers!

Neenztwinz · 25/11/2008 13:39

Before I started weaning my twins, I read about BLW and thought it looked like an amazing idea.

When I tried it I found my darling LOs didn't pick up a single thing never mind get it into the mouths.

So now I puree food and spoonfeed them and they are eating massive amounts and loving it - and sleeping all night!

So I thought I'd start a thread for others who are doing the same as me - we can swap ideas for meals and say what works for us (ie what makes them sleep ).

I gave my twins four plums plus ebm and baby rice for breakfast and they have had a big bowl of sweet potato, haricot beans and brocolli for lunch. More of the same for tea (plus maybe some swede and parsnip). They are 6.5mths old.

What did yours eat today?

neenz - same here - I have been prescribed some disgusting nutrition drinks from the doctor which you're welcome to [proffers minging banana flavoured one]

neenztwinz · 18/01/2009 22:15

Wow giant how skinny are you now then?

OP posts:
pudding25 · 18/01/2009 22:26

How come when I was bf practically all the time and only a bit of formula, I managed to put on weight-I hate you all

Neenz -other thread is great...cheered me up.

whinegums · 18/01/2009 22:33

Hi Neenz. I haven't actively tried to cut the night feeds - when he wakes, and if it's more than 2.5 hours since he last fed, I offer, and he takes. I'm too knackered during the night for my resolve to be strong enough for anything else.

I don't think I'm ready to do CC - I wish I could, but I know I would get too upset. I might have to revisit when I start work again though, but as I haven't even got a job atm, it's not my biggest worry.

I'm trying to get him to have milk before his solids during the day, but he's not that interested, so I think that's the problem. I'm hoping for a solution like Essie's, i.e. it resolves itself!!

And I've put on half a stone over Christmas, grrrr, so not enjoying the miracle weight loss benefits like the rest of you. But that'll teach me to be a total pig!

Maria2007 · 19/01/2009 08:15

Hi girls,

Neenz, I'm following the other thread too... quite interesting! It's a discussion that was needed, I think.

Pudding, me too, I'm about all those mentions of 8 stone flying around!! I have to admit though that I have lost quite a bit of weight this week because of my accident(hope I linked correctly). Am sure though that losing weight due to an accident & not being able to eat is not that great. Good news is that I'm pureeing for both me AND my baby . By the way, I upped quantities last night, DS had 4 tsps baby rice mixed with EBM & 2 cubes pear & he gobbled it up (could have been more!) He was 24 weeks yesterday but I feel he's as ready as can be. BTW girls, when should I add breakfast (a couple of cubes of fruit initially)? In a couple of weeks?

Maria2007 · 19/01/2009 08:16

BTW. Anyone on facebook interested to be friends?

giantkatestacks · 19/01/2009 09:04

I'm on FB but am too tight to pay my CAT sub...so cant tell you my name to search on

neenz - got below 8 stone before christmas - not very good at all but christmas helped a lot - not doing 4 mile school run and eating chocolate orange all day as is traditional.

and pudding it wasnt all the bf dont worry - theres other rubbish medical things going on as well...

I cant remember when we started breakfast - about 6 weeks in I think...when we did breakfast though we moved the baby rice/porridge there and had veggies at lunch and dinner.

pudding25 · 19/01/2009 09:50

Maria pretty crap way to lose weight but at least you feel thinner -got to have some benefit out of it.... Hope you are feeling a bit better now.
I last saw 8 stone when I was about 15 I reckon! Obviously, am 6ft tall though.

Do you have to pay to CAT? Am on facebook and happy to be friends too but don't know how to give my name without all the world seeing who I am!

We went to lunch and dinner first before we brought in brekkie. I think we moved fruit and rice to dinner and then had veggies/rice at lunch for a week then started with a little yoghurt and fruit at breakfast. After a couple of days of that, moved onto some plum organic porridge and fruit.

Maria2007 · 19/01/2009 09:55

Right, I'll pay for my CAT & then I'll try emailing you girls

As for the meals... I've made a rough meal planner for the next 2-3 weeks, so that I know what veg/fruit to buy & puree etc. I've based it on the GF book, but have included a couple of extra things from the AK book, e.g. papaya, mango, & a couple of combination purees (obsessive cook that I am ) My meal planner is more or less until my boy is 27 weeks, and until that point it's all vegetarian i.e. no protein or dairy added (apart from EBM of course). When he's 27 weeks, just over 6 months, which will be after 29 days of weaning (ok ok I KNOW I'm obsessional!!), I'm planning to add protein. As for breakfast, I've included it in my meal planner- just 2 cubes of fruit at first, & then a bit of oat cereal later on- from day 11 of weaning (which is this friday). Do you think that's too early? He does seem ravenous & seems to love whatever we've given him so far (baby rice & pear... not much so far actually!)

giantkatestacks · 19/01/2009 10:00

lol at the obsessional aspect of it Maria...

I think I would wait for breakfast until you had done some veggies for lunch and it was properly established and you knew that he was still taking the same amount of milk - I think if you up the solids to early then the milk can tail off a bit...when we introduced breakfast the midmorning bf was definately smaller...

Essie3 · 19/01/2009 10:26

Also on Facebook, Maria!

Whinegums less letting it resolve itself, more throwing money at the problem. Nursery don't come cheap, but they do seem to be the answer to all my problems - they wean babies! They get them to take bottles! They're really good at looking after children (unlike me)! No, seriously, I miss Iestyn, and he's only going 2 days a week, but this week he's going all day every day as troubleshooting! I left him with 100ml breastmilk and my phone number for when he drinks it all mid-morning.

Can I talk breakfast with people?
Iestyn is really reluctant with breakfast. (Much like his father, then!) He hardly takes anything. Is it because he's only just been bfed? (Less than 1 hour usually, sometimes closer to 1 hour than not - today hardly any time.) I don't want to wake him earlier - I saw all the at my 8am start, so you all know why! - but can't leave more time between bf and breakfast really because I need to start the day before 10.30 to be a normal person with normal hours!

Essie3 · 19/01/2009 10:34

BTW loving the ruck discussion on t'other thread, Neenz. Will post in a minute because there is so much bollocks being put on there.
On seeking Mrs. Rapley's qualifications on google, found this which I will listen to shortly.
Might do a Gillian McKeith and call myself Dr. Essie, expert on purees (I am a bona fide dr.; just won't mention that I'm a dr. of medieval history!)

giantkatestacks · 19/01/2009 10:50

we sometimes have the same reluctance essie because of the school run and having no time between the bf and the porridge. I wouldnt worry about it to be honest. With my ds I used to not give breakfast and nursery used to do it on the days he went there.

When he gets to a year you can start doing the breakfast first anyway...

Essie3 · 19/01/2009 10:54

Oh, thanks again Kate. I want him on 3 meals, but he's happy avoiding eating and just being breastfed all the time!! (I don't want to have a bitty situation on my hands, but he seems quite keen!) I think I need to relax - I'm big on breakfast and think sending him to nursery without breakfast - shock horror! But actually it won't kill him. And they (probably) won't judge me.

giantkatestacks · 19/01/2009 11:03

no but I mean if you bfed him when he woke up on nursery days and then just let nursery give him breakfast - I mean thats what you're paying for anyway isnt it...

giantkatestacks · 19/01/2009 11:05

ps Maria - get on with the CATing I want to get onto FB and see everyones pics...

Maria2007 · 19/01/2009 12:29

OK OK am doing it now

pudding25 · 19/01/2009 12:54

Essie - I wouldn't worry too much about breakfast if he is eating fine the rest of the time. What about trying some cereal a bit later on?

whinegums · 19/01/2009 14:23

Hi all, Essie hurrah for the nursery, money well spent by the sound of it. I agree with Pudding, and wouldn't worry too much about breakfast for now. I give B a few toast soldiers while I get on and eat my breakfast after his porridge, maybe you could try that (it's NOT BLW though, it's not, it's not!!!!). Dual benefit of keeping him occupied and maybe getting him to eat.

We had a breakthrough last night, no 9.30ish feed - B went to sleep around 7, but v unsettled for an hour. Then he went off and didn't wake again til about 11.30. I fed him twice more during the night. Now, if we can get rid of one of those feeds next, that will be a result!

I gave him an extra course at lunch yesterday of fruit, rice and EBM, so I'm going to keep that up.

Maria, I've never said hi to you yet, so HI! Your accident sounds awful, poor you, hope you are on the mend.

neenztwinz · 19/01/2009 16:09

Essie, have you tried Oatibix fpr breakfast? It is really tasty, the DTs love it and it needs loads of milk too so quite calorific (ie helps him sleep ).

Peace has broken out on the blw ruck thread which is actually kind of nice. I think MN has become less bitchy since the Moldies left. Everything used to turn into a ruck but now people seem to be able to have their own opinions and can voice them without being made to feel small.

I am on FB, my first name is n i n a and second name is k i l l e n. Hope to see you all there soon

OP posts:
giantkatestacks · 19/01/2009 16:22

neenz, dare I say it - you're evangelical about your oatibix have FBked you...

bitofadramaqueen · 19/01/2009 16:33

Am just lurking today, but Essie just to say that if the nursery doesn't provide breakfast, you could take in some cereal, porridge etc and ask them to give it to him when he gets there. My friend does that with her nursery as they dont provide breakfast. Neither does the one my DS going to actually. Am very envious of my DN's nursery - she is provided with breakfast, dinner and lunch, and its cheaper than DS's.

neenztwinz · 19/01/2009 19:11

LOL at Oatibix Kate, it is pretty good!

I listened to the BLW debate on that link Essie, interesting to see that was nearly five years ago, and what has UNICEF done about it since? I might have a look round google and see what happened there.

OP posts:
DebInAustria · 19/01/2009 20:08

Essie, My childminder used to do breakfast with the boys, so I didn't have to panic before work. It did seem strange at first leaving the house without giving them breakfast but I got used to it!!

neenztwinz · 19/01/2009 20:32

Unicef won't comment on BLW and Gill Rapley's work with them is not related to blw.
