If the children to whom you refer aren't 85 (at least), it's not all that bright a statement.

That's all.

scaredoflove now I am even more confused. The report you have quoted from says that solids can be given after 4mths if a baby 'is not gaining weight adequately'.

My HV told me to start weaning dd at 4mths as she was only putting on a little bit each week. I didn't and I am just in the process of starting her at 25wks. However, all the info I read and all the advice on mn told me that she was talking crap and that milk (she is mix fed) is far more calorific than a bit of baby rice and fruit.

So what is correct. Have I now done dd an injustice by not weaning her at 4mths to help her put on some more weight?

go to world health website, then to nutrition or search complimentary feeding all the pdfs are there to download, the original one is the 1998 one, but there are others that expand and compliment that one (2001 & 2003)

pudding, you are getting confused and worried for nothing I am pleased to say

The pdf with the quote in is from 1998.

If a baby was unable (or if the mother was unwilling) to increase milk intake, then I suppose anyone would suggest giving something in the face of a baby not gaining weight adequately.

However, since 1998, we have more research, we have, in particular, data on how normal breastfed babies gain weight, and we can see that it is normal for weight gain to slow a little from around 4-5 mths. So your baby was gaining normally, and it would have been inappropriate to give solids to deal with a 'problem' that was not a 'problem'.

In most bf babies under six months, it makes sense to tackle any issue with weight by offering more breastmilk. The baby is easily able to regulate his own intake when he is bf (less easy with spooned-in solid foods). If he needs more breastmilk to grow better then he can have it

which is what I said tiktok, if you had bothered to read, I also gave her directions to find the literature herself

Glad you feel better, pudding

scaredoflove, who rattled your cage?

I explained in a slightly different way, and with more detail....that's all.

Sheesh.

Have lost track of the thread a bit but some evidence here of the difference between 4 and 6 months. I dont think the main argument is for allergies but for gastrointestinal problems?
