Me again!

Thought id stick to one thread! Right, DS just had some toast (which he went mad for!) but he rips it apart. Is that OK?

TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 11:51

why wouldn't it be okay? his manners don't have to be great, he's only starting out.
did you give him anything else? some fruit or veg? has he liked those? try some green beans or broccoli, DD never gagged once on those.

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 11:53

I dont mind the mess... its the fact he is getting it in his mouth, ripping bits off and chewing... and swallowing scared he'll swallow a big big!

Tried mushed pear on top, but it fell off.

Bananas - too slippery ATM

Carrots was good, will try them again in afew days

Thats all ive tried so far. Did buy some brocolli but DH cooked it

oh, going to do them pancakes but need to buy a part for my pum & im scared he'll rip bits off like the toast

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 11:55

pump

OP posts:
TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 12:31

you know you can make the pancakes with water? and if you look at my blog here you will find a few helpful hints about bananas. i do it one way, some of the comments suggest other methods, so give them a try.
try to relax about the choking, do you know anything about infant resuscitation? as i've said before, i would strongly recommend any parent doing one.

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 12:37

ive looked up about choking... and know how to deal with it, need to write out resuss (sp?) stuff though. I didnt realise it was you aitch! You 100% sure its ok for DS to be chewing toast and ripping bits off? hes 6 months and quite small... Ive asked a million times, but when I do it im like "is it hard enough? soft enough? chewy enough? too chewy?" He literally shredded the toast to little peices.

Is butter ok on it? Cottage cheese? Philadelphia (sp?) Mashed fruit?

Arent I a pain in the arse!

OP posts:
TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 12:39

mmmmm, unsalted butter would be my first choice... yum. although i do give her philly or hummous as well. i've not had great success with putting anything else on toast as it just seems to fall off.
tell me honestly, quootie, has he actually choked on anything yet?

TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 12:41

i got a few resus leaflets from the hospital and i gave them to my mum and husb and i keep one in my purse. (it's a small leaflet). i also keep one in the medicine cabinet so that if something goes wrong and my mind goes blank i'll know exactly where it is.

SoupDragon · 08/10/2006 12:41

Aitch, have you got nigella's "Feast" book? Her potato latkes and the apple ones work well as a finger food (ie they're easily shredded and scattered all over the floor by small dragons). I made them at half the quantities given with just egg yolk.

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 12:42

gagged but hes getting bit bits of toast in his mouth... im paranoid!

Unsalted, yep.

OP posts:
QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 12:43

*big

OP posts:
QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 12:44

can I do eggy bread? never had/done it but thought about it. Well, eggy toast.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 08/10/2006 12:45

Supposely you should use just egg yolk as the white is the "more allergic" bit.

Lact8 · 08/10/2006 12:48

Don't worry about the choking. Obv, you need to know what to do just in case but I found if dd swallowed something too big she would just gag and it would pop straight back out.

Carrot is a good one. Try banana again but you hold it and let him guide your hand, still messy tho!

Wracking my brain trying to think what I gave dd, only a few months ago to

She liked sticks of cheese too. And toast.

Whatever veg we were having for sunday lunch I would just stick on her tray and carry on eating my own meal and let her maul it about a bit.

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 12:48

oh right Never knew that. Maybe i should dip his toast fingers into yolk for him... or let him do it himself

OP posts:
QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 12:50

cheese? is that safe?

now... could i melt cheese on toast?

OP posts:
TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 12:50

of course i have nigella's feats, soupy, am i not a bourgeois pig? i'll go and look at it now. i love a potato latke, but they are a bit faffy. do you think you could freeze them?

quootie, it depends how soon you want to be giving egg. dd is nearly ten months and only recently tasted egg yolk. my friend's wee boy has an egg allergy so that made me a wee bit cautious. but if it's your intention just to give egg from now then eggy bread (or french toast as Nigella and I call it) would be lovely.

if you are confident about your resus stuff there's no need to be paranoid, i believe. when dd started she gagged once or twice a day, within a few weeks it was hardly ever. as for choking, she's done it twice i think once on apple and i can't remember what the other thing was. probably something raw, though, rather than cooked.

take deep breaths, quootie, he'll be fine. and if he's not, then dd's choking has always been solved with a slap on the back and nothing more dramatic. not to mention the fact that she has immediately gone back to eating afterwards so was a great deal less bothered than i.

TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 12:51

nigella's feast. not feats.

Lact8 · 08/10/2006 13:04

You would think by no 3 I would know whats safe wouldn't you? In my defence I do know about the egg thing tho

I just gave her fingers of cheese and she wolfed them and didn't seem to do her any harm

I'm sounding very lax aren't I? DD wanted to eat so much that she tried all sorts just by grabbing them off people when they're eating.

And she sampled lots of half chewed biscuits off the floor at playgroup too

SoupDragon · 08/10/2006 13:05

They didn't seem too faffy and I can't see why they wouldn't freeze.

TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 16:34

quootie, have you read the finger foods bit of the blog? cos all these things (apart from the latkes) are on there, written up in near-obsessive detail. and deffo yes to cheese.

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 08/10/2006 16:37

oh righty - o.... I keep forgetting to check the blog

OP posts:
TheBlairAitchProject · 08/10/2006 17:50

thanks soupy, i don't mind a bit of faff so long as you can get it all over in a oner and freeze more for later.

QueenQuootieSpookypieBee · 13/10/2006 21:42

More Q's....

My DS grabbed some cucumber from my sandwich and sucked on it... and gnawed it abit. Is cucumber ok? How should I "serve" it? Fingers minus the "skin"? and he grabbed a strip of lamb ... and loved it. Didnt have the heart to take it away, but, I think its abit tender. What meat is ok? and when? and how? Hes become abit food obsessed now!

Thanks!

CastsSpellsWitchySpells · 13/10/2006 21:53

Hi Quootipie - not sure that I'm classed as a true blw'er, but DD (8 months) will currently only entertain the idea of eating if she's feeding herself, so I know lots about finger food!

Cucumber should be fine. I serve it in fingers without the skin, yes.

Pretty much all meat is ok to give, but different ones will prob be eaten in different ways. You could give big hunks of beef/lamb which he will prob chew a bit but not actually swallow, or you could give softer meat that he can actually break through and swallow. DD had chicken livers as finger food today as they are lovely and soft to eat, as well as being packed full of iron and thus good for her.

You sound very worried that your DS might actually eat something, but that is really the idea of weaning! Do try and relax a bit if you can - the gag reflex really is a great thing, and you will always be there when he's eating to administer a pat on the back if necessary. We've given DD all sorts of things to munch on, and she's not choked once!
