Me again!

Thought id stick to one thread! Right, DS just had some toast (which he went mad for!) but he rips it apart. Is that OK?

OP posts:

I just get worried about what to feed him - im abit simple. I didnt know kiwis were a no-no. Once I know the food is ok, for his age, im OK. I never think about wheat or eggs or alergies because ive never come across them. And im blind to choking risks.... I nearly gave DS apple for his 1st food Didnt occur to me. So, I have to double check everything Hes so tiny aswell.... Theres the added thing about whether the food is for babies with teeth, or more experienced eater... etc. etc.

AitchTwoOh · 02/11/2006 20:14

i think a cream carpet it somewhat inconsistent with child rearing in its entirety, not just BLW, to be honest. i make a normal spag bol but i don't break up the mince very much so that there will be some meatballs left that i can pull out for the baby.
littlepiggie is right, quootie, try eating all together if you can. and try not to give a shit how much is eaten, they'll make up the differnce in milk.

and soupy i think your daughter sounds amazing. she'll be a hilarious teenager, if you live that long...

DizzyBint · 02/11/2006 20:16

you can give apple quootie. dd has hers grated. she just grabs it in her chubby fist and shoves it in her mouth. anything too big she just shoves back out again with her tongue. she loves taking huge bites of banana, fills her mouth with it. squishes it up with her tongue and whatever she can't swallow she shoves back out again.

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:17

ds has two teeth now and eats ermmmmmm, everything, hes like a bottomless pit (27weeks), Best so far cripy duck.
If he gags we pretend that we are not bothered, oh i am horrid.

QuootiePieBANGERSandMash · 02/11/2006 20:18

Aitch - can DS even have the pasta spaghetti stuff?

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:19

QP, he will soon let you know if he cant.

QuootiePieBANGERSandMash · 02/11/2006 20:19

im sure I read apple was a no-no somewhere.... see how useless I am?!

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:22

Its a bit hard if you give them bite size chunks, try eating one with him on your knee and let him have a chew at a whole one, or grate it. (will scrape it with bottom teeth)

opps

but quootie, if you read the blog all this information is already there. you can tell what my dd was eating (nothing particularly allergenic) if you start at the bottom of the finger foods section and work up. she was 6 months when we started blw and i started the blog a fortnight afterwards.

if you don't have allergies in the family then i wouldn't bother so much (apart from peanuts). the only reason i said that i didn't want to put photos of kiwi up is that there are some latex allergy associations and i didn't want someone to come along and think 'oh there's a photo, kiwi must be okay'.

equally it's not something i know about and i haven't given it to dd yet (nor strawberries, but morv's baby eats both frequently) so i'm not in a position to write something about it yet. when dd gets to a year you'll see an entry on kiwi, no doubt, but until then i'm just avoiding the issue. try to relax about it, sweetheart, you are not in the least bit daft, you are actually being pretty bold in trying BLW, it's kinda new. we're all just feeling our way through it here, but if you read the blog (and use the search facility, paying attention to the dates of entry) then you'll at least have some thoughts from some people a few months ahead of you.

DizzyBint · 02/11/2006 20:26

the danger with apple is if they take a chunk and choke on it cos its hard. it's like you wouldnt give an uncooked potato..kind of! but if you grate it then it's very manageable.

AitchTwoOh · 02/11/2006 20:32

deep breaths, quootie, you are NOT DAFT, just concerned. that's perfectly right, you are his mum after all.

in my opinion (and 95% of that blog is just my opinion) apple can be tricky when they are starting off.
like littlepiggie says you could give them it sitting on your knee and watching them like a hawk (knowing that you can turn them upside down in a flash) then fine. I couldn't be bothered, for the most part, not when there were plenty of soft fruit alternatives in summer.
some people steam the apple to soften it, some grate it, again , i did this a few times but largely couldn't be bothered. once they get a bit older (7, 8 months, maybe?) or get a couple of teeth you can give them the whole apple, take a bite yourself and then they'll scrape at it, effectively grating the apple with their teeth. honestly, this is on the blog in excruciatingly geeky detail... did you manage to have a look at it? make sure you read the comments as well as we have quite a few more experienced BLWers who pop on and give the best advice.

dd is particularly enjoying pears at the moment, why not try them? the skin's easy to break so you should just be able to hand it over with a bite out and he might surprise you and get on with it.

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:33

give spaghetti, then sit and watch as he tries to work it out, (note to self, must try)

QuootiePieBANGERSandMash · 02/11/2006 20:33

thing is... im jumping up and down the page...are all the foods suitable for all ages/abilities then?

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:35

Aitch, i meant a whole apple, my dad ate an apple with master piggie on his knee, guss what, he went for it.

AitchTwoOh · 02/11/2006 20:37

there's nothing i can do to change the format of the blog at the moment, sorry, just read it from the bottom and work your way up. she started in July at 6 months, so entries in July are suitable for beginners. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera... and onwards to the dizzy heights of Novemeber and a baby of 10months-ish.

AitchTwoOh · 02/11/2006 20:37

oh yes, sorry, that's what i thought you'd meant too, did i get mixed up? sorry.

SoupDragon · 02/11/2006 20:38
Envy
QuootiePieBANGERSandMash · 02/11/2006 20:39

no, no, your blogs great - Im just picking and chosing the food... should I be doing it in order?

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:41

whats to do soupy?

QP, GIVE DS WHATEVER YOU ARE EATING, SIT BACK, AND TRY TO EAT YOURS! if you can stop laughing long enough.

QuootiePieBANGERSandMash · 02/11/2006 20:43

anything? at 7 months? lasagne, spag bol, stew... (minus fancy ingredients, salt etc.) Sure? 100%? Poor things had carrots, carrots and carrots for a month

littlepiggie · 02/11/2006 20:48

no added salt or sugar
no honey or nuts

Anything else is up to you, i am not giving master piggie eggs as my brother has an egg alergy.

And will leave kiwis and berrys untill the summer, (or until they are in season)

DizzyBint · 02/11/2006 20:49

yes! and yes ditch the salt, add it to yours after if you wish but no bad thing in you cutting back on the salt anyway. and there's nothing wrong with them having a bit of spice, aitch has a jolly nice onion bahji recipe on her blog, and lamb tajine. yum!
