How do they ignore the obvious hypocrisy?
How do they live with the cognitive dissonance?

I am almost jealous of their ability to live in such a state that allows them to detach themselves from the reality of the consequences of their choices.

@NeverDropYourMooncup of course anyone could quote George Bernard Shaw, or any other writer/poet/playwright.
I just happen to like the quote a gave, and it illustrates the point succinctly 😊

To quote George Bernard Shaw -

'animals are my friends, and I don't eat my friends'

I don't consider people or animals I've never met to be friends. They aren't even acquaintances. I've met some cows at my local farm, but in passing, I don't know them by name, kind of like a neighbour I might recognise and say hi to when I see them. My cats are my friends, and no, I don't eat them, so I do agree about not eating friends.
