Non-vegan who believe themselves to be animal lovers

How do they ignore the obvious hypocrisy?
How do they live with the cognitive dissonance?

I am almost jealous of their ability to live in such a state that allows them to detach themselves from the reality of the consequences of their choices.

OP posts:

Quite easily OP. I make sure our animals are well cared for. As i sit here now looking out of the window i can see the sheep knowing i will one day eat them.

Why are you posting in the vegan section then?

Carnivores can discuss veganism. I don't think I've ever seen a meat related discussion on here without a vegan popping in.

Surely it's better for an animal to never be born than to live a short life of suffering then get killed?

You don't need to be vegan in order to avoid a shorter life of suffering .

My meat comes from a local farm. The animals are kept outside and have a very fulfilled life albeit a bit shorter than you think it should be.

Locally grown, seasonal and non UPF food is the way forward.

That's if you care about the environment and ALL animals not just a few cows, chicken or pigs.

CurlewKate · 02/04/2024 16:20

I am aware of the hypocrisy. However, I only eat ethically sourced animal products. I can live with that.

CurlewKate · 02/04/2024 16:22

@TheMixedGirl "You sound like a typical judgmental holier than thou vegan"

That's not what most vegans are like. It's a ridiculous, inaccurate stereotype.

BresciaBike · 02/04/2024 16:26

WHO WANTS SWEET, WHO WANTS SALTED? hands out popcorn

Just out of curiosity, is “hypocrit” the new spelling?

My phone seems to think so it keeps autocorrecting it to drop the e, I just go with it

Humans can thrive on plants. Plus if you’ve seen the canine teeth of a gorilla (herbivore) or a hippo (herbivore) you’ll see they are not a very good indication of what we need to eat.

But we aren't talking about gorillas and hippos are we?

Wolfpa · 02/04/2024 17:05

@Milake you can ask the same about vegans having pets. How can you say you love them while forcing them against their nature.

the truth is not all animals are seen equally, people say they are animal lovers but what they often mean is the cute fluffy ones. I have seen many an animal lover squash a spider or remove a bees nest.

animals that are bread for food are seen differently to animals that you would have in your home.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/04/2024 17:27

This is the vegan board, OP is asking other vegans. It is hard to understand the cognitive dissonance for us (albeit as above I do think I understand it at some level).

Well it shouldn't be hard for the OP to understand, judging by the post quoted upthread where she said she roasted a chicken with lovely crispy skin in her airfryer. Hmm

Exactly this!

How pathetic to come on the vegan board just to say that. Ffs.

Its not just about 'meat'.

What do you think happens to all the male babies that don't lay eggs or produce milk.

Only females really have any value in farms (why do you think you see fields of cows, sheep and pens of chickens but rarely see bulls, rams or roosters) so that equals the mass culling of males. Very short lives.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/04/2024 18:40

@SunsetAtTheRiver I didn't realise it was on the vegan board. It was on the active threads feed.

I suppose it’s similar to people who believe that they care about human rights and children’s welfare yet buy phones and clothing etc. made by people/children in unacceptably inhumane conditions.

Do you not own a phone then?

OnHerSolidFoundations · 03/04/2024 02:16

You realise that most animals eat other animals right op?

SunsetAtTheRiver · 03/04/2024 02:19

OnHerSolidFoundations · 03/04/2024 02:14

Do you not own a phone then?

Hardly comparable to large scale industrial farming.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 03/04/2024 02:23

@SunsetAtTheRiver that's the comparison being made by the poster I was asking. Hence the question.

SunsetAtTheRiver · 03/04/2024 02:26

OnHerSolidFoundations · 03/04/2024 02:16

I meant to quote this, not the one about phones. This is hardly comparable to large scale industrial farming.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 03/04/2024 02:32

The op is about eating meat 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes, and humans killing and eating meat isn’t comparable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

🥱

Of the people I’ve spoken to about this who eat meat and other animal products, but say they’re animal lovers, they generally say they don’t think about it, try not to think about it or see different animals in different ways.

My meat eating partner says if he does stop and think about it, he feels he’s doing wrong, but then he wants to eat animals/animal products, so he just distracts himself until he forgets about it. He has cut down the amount of animal products he consumes and has periods where he doesn’t eat any at all. Another relative says they see dogs/cats as more important than cows/pigs/chickens. Occasionally, people have said they simply don’t care.

None if that is a way of thinking that I can pretend to understand. I try not to get into it with others but unfortunately some people seem to take exception to the fact I’m a vegan. I’ve had relatives start picking at me because I’ve ordered a vegan meal in a restaurant and sometimes weird reactions from strangers too.

WandaWonder · 03/04/2024 05:12

so the superiority vegans I find never able to answer if they eat any foods that are produced using bees, have shellac nails, have leather items they own and other hypocrisies

I have no issue with people who are vegans but when the lecturing starts they start choking on their inferiority burgers

Being vegan for me (and other vegans I know) is the vegan societies definition of it. Excluding exploitation and cruelty to animals as far as is possible and practical.

I have to eat, (I make an effort to eat local products) work and live in the modern world and no system is perfect and can completely eliminate all harm.

I don’t have my nails done or buy leather products.
