@ppeatfruit I’ve never thought of using marmite in a cheesey sauce!

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 25/10/2021 09:02

@BelladiMamma I LOVE marmite (yeast extract) so I eat it thickly spread on toast/crumpets/sandwiches quite often. The main cooking use for me is when cooking something that would previously have been meaty (like stew, shepherds pie etc) I add 1-2 teaspoons of marmite once the liquid is in
Yeast flakes (aka nooch) I use where I would have previously added Parmesan (like yesterday's soup or on beans on toast). Also use them as an ingredient in things like Bosh butternut carbonara or Bosh Camembert

Saturday
B: kiwi, porridge with raspberries, golden syrup and seeds
D: Dahl, Meera sodha’s sprout curry, rice and hm chapati
Also grazed on collective raspberry yogurt, popcorn, salt and pepper cashews, jam sandwich, magnum

Sunday
B: kiwi, garlic roasted cherry tomatoes on toast
L: slice of bread and butter with mixed veg and lentil soup with rose harissa and nooch (bottom of the fridge soup!)
Dinner at my parents house. Dad cooked a curry with quorn pieces (didn’t have the heart to tell him that they’re vegetarian not vegan so I ate some anyway). He also made a pea and mushroom curry, and there was rice and naan. My mum made a vegan trifle for pudding which was lovely

ppeatfruit · 25/10/2021 10:04

I couldn't post my missive earlier (they're doing some site work I suppose). Yes marmite\ yeaast extract is very versatile like British miso! (not so sophisticated of course!!!) You can make a hot drink and stocks from it. What it does have which strict vegans need is B12 and plenty of protein. Not only that it's tasty!!

B. Quince smoothie a few walnuts,
L. Baked, red onions, carrots. and steamed broccolli. Tamari and olive oil,
S. The freezer was left open last night so we needed to start using some of the foods! I made a custard from ground almonds and had it with a hm gf hot cross bun. It was too rich!

I literally only eat marmite on toast (food of the gods) but might try it instead of bisto stirred into “meaty” soups and stews

@PartTimeDomesticGoddess what a sweet effort on your parents’ behalves, no matter about the Quorn, I’d have done the same

I had a horrific weekend of eating junk for various reasons, mainly not having access to anything decent due to babysitting my friends’ toddler Friday morning - Sunday evening. It’s raining And cosy here today so I really want to plan soups and casseroles for the week but it I’ll be 28degree again by Wednesday! Doing a warming winter veg soup tonight though and can’t wait

BelladiMamma · 25/10/2021 19:51

Being lazy and got a vegan Buddha bowl from M&S after the gym

KobaniDaughters · 26/10/2021 04:56

L: miso shiitake soup, half a bagel with cream cheese
S: blueberries and a granola bar
D: winter veg and tomato soup, toasted sourdough and oat butter

SapatSea · 26/10/2021 09:05

PartTimeDomesticGoddess - I also thought it was really nice that your parents had made a vegan meal and would have chugged down the Quorn.

Yesterday:
B: a couple of Hobnobs and an apple
L: Goodlife Beanburger and salad
D: Fennel, Leek, garlic, aleppo chilli, tomato, parsley Butterbean stew with sweetheart cabbage and broccoli on the side.

Today
B: Hot Chocolate
L: Leftover Butterbean stew
D: Five Spice Tofu and Fried cauliflower rice with edamame, peas, spring onion, ginger, sesame oil, soy, white pepper and Pak choi tossed in.

ppeatfruit · 26/10/2021 09:27

Kobani have you tried it with pnut butter on toast? That is my food of the gods! I eat no salt pnut butter so the yeast extract gives it more flavour!
Sapat Did you make your 5 spice tofu yourself? It sounds good.

Finiished smoothie with a bowl of steamed quince\sultanas.
L. Walnuts Ryvita with usual spreads and shallot salad piece of choc. I've got to cut down, toothache again!
S. Pea pasta with green beans sauce.

Yesterday I had a non vegan day but I did my shopping order and added lots more vegan options. I find eggs really hard to give up; my DC aren't vegan they're plain veggie but we don't have a lot of dairy eg we have oat and soya milk but we will have cheese or yogurts every other day

ppeatfruit · 26/10/2021 10:15

Bellad have you tried the tofu yoghurt? That's lovely, some of the health food shops do a proper 'plain ' one .

I don't eat coconut so I don't eat the bought vegan cheese but Ive made a lovely 'cream cheese' from blended soaked almonds. As long as you add plenty of garlic, salt and herbs you like, it tastes nice.

@KobaniDaughters @SapatSea thank you for understanding about the quorn (and see yesterday's food below for more quorn escapades 🤦‍♀️)
Hope you enjoyed your veg soup @KobaniDaughters and @SapatSea I love the sound of both of those meals, but especially the bean stew

@ppeatfruit I've never got around to trying peanut butter and marmite together. Must remember to do that...

@BelladiMamma eggs are the thing I miss most tbh, especially in baking. I don't know which type of yogurts your family likes but my DD15 happily eats alpro fruit yogurts as she says they just taste like yogurt

B: kiwi, 2 satsumas, half a slice of dad’s sourdough bread (toasted with jam)
Lunch out for Mum’s birthday - mushroom risotto and a side of seasonal veg, followed by a poached pear with hazelnut praline and vanilla ice cream. It was all very nice but the desert was especially good
Then our road trip of visiting family continued by coming to stay with my SIL and BIL. SIL had also bought quorn to make a spag bol for dinner, but again had made so much effort that I ate it (she bought violife feta, Parmesan alternative and there’s even a vegan frittata in the fridge for me!)

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 26/10/2021 10:21

@KobaniDaughters
@SapatSea

My phone has done something funny with that post when I've tried to include you in the same sentence. Hopefully you can work out the gist 😂

ppeatfruit · 26/10/2021 10:28

It's not just your phone Part it's also my laptop. I think that the MN office is still having an Autumn Clean Grin

Thank you for the reminder re alpro. I'll eat them but the kids don't, however I saw that there are more vegan ice cream options so I'll maybe stock the fridge with alternatives and see who eats them!

Your family sound so considerate. That's great!

KobaniDaughters · 26/10/2021 15:05

I don’t know what you can get in the U.K. these days but there’s been an explosion of vegan yoghurts here that can be coconut or almond or cashew based, worth checking out (personally find cashew yoghurts the creamiest but we also buy ours from a local farmers market)

ppeatfruit · 27/10/2021 08:29

Kobani Yes it does seem to be similar in Eng. not quite so many in Fr. (but we're in the country) I love the oat ones.

B. Apple\pear\date, linseeds, ginger and lemon smoothie.
L. Walnuts, endive, carrot, shallot salad with a mustrd dressing, spelt toast with yeast spread and pnut butter.
S. Pea pasta dish.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 27/10/2021 12:50

B: Richmond sausages and vegan tortilla with lashings of brown sauce
D: supermarket pizza with artichokes, olives, spinach and mushrooms with a salad
S: some (huge fat) chips on our day out, white bread/plant butter/ready salted crisp sandwich after the pub with SIL and BIL (can’t remember the last time I had a crisp sandwich but it was bloody lovely!)

KobaniDaughters · 27/10/2021 14:59

@PartTimeDomesticGoddess like a Spanish tortilla?!!

L: insipid soup from the freezer
S: raspberries, blueberries, cashews
D: spaghetti squash, home made roasted tomato and garlic sauce, feta, basil and pine nuts

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 27/10/2021 18:48

@KobaniDaughters - yes! I can't remember the make of the one SIL bought for me, but this one looks pretty much the same. It was ok, hugely improved with the lashings of brown sauce though

KobaniDaughters · 27/10/2021 19:29

Nice!!

I’m trying some new chorizo sausages I found in wholefoods tonight

SapatSea · 27/10/2021 20:19

KobaniDaughters this sounds great spaghetti squash, home made roasted tomato and garlic sauce, feta, basil and pine nuts although insipid soup doesn't Grin

PartTimeDomesticGoddess I like how you had chips and a crisp sandwiches later- Carbacide!

ppeatfruit I love the ingredients in your smoothie.

I had a lazy day foodwise:
L: a few falafels stuffed in a pitta with some salad, preserved lemon and harissa
Sn: crisps
D: I just piggybacked on my daughters cooking (as partner was having meat bolognaise and zoodles). DD's make basically the same dinner every single day - baked tofu (dipped in soy and olive oil), jasmine rice, sweetheart cabbage, leeks, petit pois, edamame, broccoli, carrots and corn on the cob, mushrooms.
It was nice to have something cooked for me.

KobaniDaughters · 28/10/2021 03:35

The spaghetti squash WAS delicious, leftovers for tomorrow

L: leftover veg soup (even better a few days later), blueberries
D: creamy white beans and shiitake mushrooms with chorizo and roast courgette, slice of sourdough to soak up the juices

ppeatfruit · 28/10/2021 09:07

Sapat It's a good way to get some of my 5 a day (I do Food Combining for health and weight so I eat fruit for breakfast, on an empty stomach) Your DDs sound amazing good for them.

Kobani Did you bake the squash 'a la moi?' Grin

B. Not feeling well today, some infection in my tooth. So made a garlic medicine with turmeric. Hardly ate anything.
L. Made some rice with baked butternut squash
S. 2 ryvitas with spreads

OP posts:
PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 28/10/2021 10:46

Oh no @ppeatfruit ☹️ Hope your tooth feels better soon
@SapatSea - love the sound of your DDs dinner, even better when cooked for you!
@KobaniDaughters - how was the new chorizo?

B: porridge with coconut milk, raspberries and blueberries
L: fake duck and hoisin sauce wrap, apple and mango juice
S: ready salted crisps
D: tarka dahl, gobi bhajee, rice, chapati and poppadoms (take away - last night with SIL and BIL)

KobaniDaughters · 28/10/2021 16:58

@ppeatfruit hope your tooth gets better soon, how miserable. I’ve always cooked spaghetti squash whole otherwise you don’t get it Spaghetti like, but I am going to try your method next time I do butternut!

@PartTimeDomesticGoddess they were pretty good! Pre-vegan days I used to make this dish of chorizo and butter beans and I love love loved it, so excited cos these sausages I think will hold up in that dish so I’m going to give it a go maybe next week
