I’m obviously enjoying my food far too much at the moment as I’ve put on a few pounds.
I don’t believe in diets but need to show some portion size control and not have seconds Grin

Sendmetobarbados · 11/02/2021 10:08

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! @parttimedomesticgoddess I've tried about three dishes from Dr Greger's book and they were all good. Chickpea and cauli curry was really nice. I'll try and post a pic of the rice recipe here...

@DialsMavis I had the Persian legume soup! It was absolutely DELICIOUS. I had two massive bowls of it as well. My Iranian neighbour poo-pooed the addition of the white wine vinegar and lime when I asked her advice, so I didn't put those in and at her insistence, did put in some dried mint. But to be honest I suspect it's one of those dishes -like stovies in Scotland - that every family has their own very definite take on and all else is sacrilege.

Otherwise:
B: hearty muesli mix (oats, chopped dates, maple syrup, cacao nibs, peanut butter, half a banana) again.
L: sourdough toast, hummus, tomatoes
Snacks: satsuma

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 11/02/2021 19:38

Ooh I love these!

For breakfast we had a fry up. Tried the new vivera sausages which had a lovely skin on them.

For dinner we’re having Jamaican beef patties, curried sweet corn fritters and mango and avocado salad.

We also had bourbons and a cup of tea watching love it or list it this afternoon.

sweetkitty · 11/02/2021 19:42

Can I join? Vegan for about 5 years and feel like I’m stuck in a rut looking for some new ideas. Here’s my today
B:Weetabix soya milk
S:Nakd bar (don’t usually have anything at break time but there was cake in the staff room and felt deprived)
L:homous sandwich and a banana
D: pasta with tomato sauce and Linda McCartney meatballs
S: salt and vinegar kettle crisps

KobaniDaughters · 11/02/2021 19:42

Does anyone have an air fryer? DH bought it on a whim (he loves a kitchen gadget) but we still haven’t got into the game it ofnusing it

Have just had the arrival of a lovely kitchen aid navy blender. Finally I have a good blender and I am looking to start having a filling, tasty smoothie for breakfast. I like the cocoa, peanut butter, date and coffee combo some of you have spoken about. Is it hideously calorific I read a similar recipe online and it was 400c per seving. Has anyone got good bfast smoothie recommendations. I am also looking for a late afternoon recipe to tide me over till dinner. I am trying to lose 2 stone unsuccessfully so far. Xx

KobaniDaughters · 11/02/2021 20:46

I do the breakfast smoothie and it’s not that calorific - it depends what you put in, mine’s banana, coffee, a date and some almond butter, it makes a small glass but super filling. Sometimes I forget to soak a date or if the banana was frozen when very ripe so it will be sweet enough

Have to say though I rarely eat breakfast so will often make it bigger and have it for lunch, if that’s an option?

I have one but I didn't really get on with it. I've found I prefer to just use a silicone mat in the oven and no oil for things like tofu or sweet potato cubes.
ElfAndSafetyInspector · 11/02/2021 21:02

Today has been

B: toast and marmite
L: quorn ham and beetroot sandwich
D: sweet potato rice bowl with leftover tempeh chilli

Also lots of crisps, because I bothered to weigh myself in the first time in months and I have put on a LOT of weight over lockdown, so I'd better eat all the junk food in the house in preparation for no more junk food, right?

@AlmightyBob so glad you enjoyed it.

I've eaten sparsely today (by my greedy standards) as I took a Wicked Kitchen Chocolate and Raspberry cake to my mums doorstep as it is her 74th birthday, and I knew I wanted a massive slab!

B: All Bran, berries and unsweetened soya
L:Tomatoes and mushrooms on seedy toast
D: smoked tofu, Quinioa and freekah mix, spinach, tomato, cucumber
S: cake! Protein shake

Tomorrow I am making my fave lentil dahl and having a vat of white wine and some Candy Kittens, not sure about the rest but counting down the hours to end of home school and work for a week

DialsMavis · 11/02/2021 21:31

We are having this on Saturday Smile

KobaniDaughters · 11/02/2021 21:47

Ok might be time to share your favourite Dahl recipes. I did one a while ago that was AMAZING and in the instapot and can’t for the life of me remember where I found it

Can I join? I’m a recent convert after 30 years of being vegetarian.

B- gf oats with blueberries and vanilla alpro yoghurt
L- smoothie (apple, avocado, celery, spinach and parsley).
D- Spicy tofu salad
S- almonds and red peppers

AlmightyBob · 12/02/2021 06:33

Welcome @Reinventinganna , @sweetkitty and @intheenddoesitreallymatter

Your Valentine's day dinner à deux sounds exciting @DialsMavis - look forward to hearing about it! I love the sound of the trifle especially. It's been years since i had trifle and I miss it. I also miss tiramisu, I keep meaning to have a go at veganising it but I don't want the results to be depressing.

@KobaniDaughters My favourite dal recipe is the first one I ever made, it's an Anjum Anand one from a while ago. Like she suggests in the description, I add an onion to the tempering garlic and cumin seeds, also some whole mustard seeds. Sometimes I add some fenugreek to the cooking lentils, tumeric and ginger. It's a nice quick and easy one

kitchen.nine.com.au/recipes/anjum-anands-simple-spinach-and-lentil-curry/d6493e4b-fcbc-473a-8b6e-089fdf8733d4

My husband likes Tarka Dal, we've got a recipe written down that I would have got off the internet but I can't remember where. It have been another Anjum Anand one because this does look pretty much it:

www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/tarkadal_90055

I also recently loved that oven roasted dal from the Green Roasting Tin. it was more of a rich and luxurious take because of the coconut milk.

Your navy blender sounds exciting @Coconut80 ! I have a kitchen aid mixer that my mum gave me about ten years ago. It seems to be basically indestructible. It's been dropped on the floor twice (it moves around a lot when it's mixing dough and I'm easily distracted) and hasn't got a scratch on it. The floor, on the other hand...

Crackerofdoom · 12/02/2021 06:43

Ooh I'd like to join you! I have come back to veganism this year but am struggling as I live with 3 vegetable-critical kids and a husband who loves meat.

We have also just moved to France. Although the produce here is great and there are a lot of vegetarian options, there are very few vegan options here so lots more cooking from scratch.

My problem is that all the recipe books and blogs Ii look at want to show how amazing vegan food can be, which is great but I need alternatives to egg on toast and not meals which take 2 hours and 30 ingredients.

Any advice for more basic recipes? I love to cookout don't always have the time for super fancy stuff

AlmightyBob · 12/02/2021 07:20

Hello @Crackerofdoom ! Are you looking for basic recipes for quick one-person meals / snacks (like your egg on toast example) or meals for all four of you that can be vegan or not? Or both?

ppeatfruit · 12/02/2021 08:48

Ref. dahl and easy meals. Cracker We live in Fr. too!! Organic farmers are just incredible here for fabulous fresh veg. I discovered that the tiny orange lentils make a wonderful dahl in the microwave!! (mum only has a micro so I experiment with it when I'm in Eng. caring for her.) I also find that freezing rice, and vegetables dishes is great for once a week cooking.

B. My smoothies are easy if you have a hand held blender I often leave the dried fruit soaking overnight. Also I make enough for 2 and a half days. I only use fruit because I like to keep my weight in check!! (eating fruit on an empty stomach is the secret for that!).

L. leftover chestnut loaf onion gravy and brussels
S. Sn. 2 slices spelt toast with pnut butter, nooch and olive oil, with shallot and endive. 3 Ryvitas the same.

Oh another weight loss tip is not to eat heavily after 6pm. (some fruit is great) Also drink plenty of filtered water

Kintsugi16 · 12/02/2021 09:56

@ppeatfruit Dahl in the microwave? I need to experiment with this!

I need to eat after 6pm as DH is still working then but I often don’t eat until late morning and haven’t for years, which turns out is that 16:8 diet. I’m only a size 10 but this pandemic means I’m at home at the moment so eating earlier in the morning and I’m definitely more food focussed so a few lbs have crept on.

I will cut back next week, put the cashews on a high shelf and resist that evening chocolate digestive Grin

KobaniDaughters · 12/02/2021 15:17

Ugh cashews are so Morris’s @Kintsugi16 !!! I developed such a love for them when I had to have braces as an adult and started the road to veganism and they were the only nuts I could really eat!

Welcome @Crackerofdoom it is a transition - took me a while to relearn how to cook and eat and now I find it all pretty quick and easy. For your quick snacks mashed avocado or hummus on toast or rice cakes should fulfil your old egg roles and quick and easy meals
Abound - have you come across Oh She Glows? I swore by her blog and food when I was starting out, she’s pretty simple and easy to follow and in Canada where fancy ingredients are harder to come by
