Veganuary 2018

Myself and DD aged 16 are going to try a vegan diet for January. DD is already vegetarian and I was vegetarian for many years although recently not. I really want to try a lighter healthier plant based way of eating, feel blurgh after all the rich food of Christmas, and am really keen to see if it helps my psoriasis. If we like it we may well continue but I signed up for Veganuary to give us a focus. DD2 is a fussy eater and not a big fan of vegetables so that may be tricky, DH is happy to eat vegetarian but vegan may be a step too far for him. Would really welcome any tips for adaptable family meals eg. sausage and mash, I can do vegan sausages for us and meat for them. I'm actually really looking forward to it now!

Thanks will look at Pinterest and the Hairy Biker recipe looks yum

HemanOrSheRa · 04/01/2018 22:15

I didn't do to potato topping Princess. I think that is an optional tweak in the book.

that looks great!

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2018 13:41

Ooh hello Japanese Smile. It was delicious!

DH and I are both working from home and have really enjoyed this Cashew Mac dish from Allplants who deliver boxes of vegan ready meals. We are using these as a bit of a cheat on busy days and instead of takeaways. Really enjoyed it.

@maybeshesawomble wow looks great!

Went out for lunch in Shoreditch and so many vegan options available. Had a falafel box with lots of salad. Delicious.

Also bought the Hugh FW book on a recommendation from a PP and am planning on finding some exciting dinner options in there.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2018 14:16

Oooh womble they come up on my FB feed. That looks absolutely delicious!

maybeshesawomble · 05/01/2018 14:26

I’ll keep everyone posted on the other dishes!

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2018 14:50

I'd be really interested in the other dishes womble. Did you order the Jerk Jackfruit? I'm off work still at the moment as DS doesn't go back to school until Monday. Once he does and we are back in the swing of school/work/activities a few easy freezer options would be brilliant.

Magpie24 · 05/01/2018 16:58

I fancy a junk food treat dinner tonight, any ideas?

My go to would be pizza, I suppose I could make one without cheese but quite fancy something new!

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2018 17:21

We've got a vegan junk food cafe close to us Magpie. Their Nachos box is delicious. And their burritos. Something like that? Or veggie burger loaded with salad etc and chips?

Magpie24 · 05/01/2018 17:42

@HemanOrSheRa lucky you! Where are you based? I was thinking of veggie burgers and chips! Maybe with some curry sauce

Woolfrai · 05/01/2018 17:46

I've read lots of brilliant things about the jackfruit from Sainsbury's. @Magpie24, following on from @HemanorSheRa 's suggestion, apparently the jackfruit makes a great burrito!

My lunch today was a vegan club sandwich from my local independent cafe. It was a delicious Friday treat. The cafe also do a vegan supper club so I'm going to see if some friends are free to go to that.

I also ate a raw Pulsin berry brownie - which I recommend.

Husband is cooking tonight, he's making something with sweet potatoes and vegetables.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2018 17:48

I'm in Bristol Magpie. We are really lucky here - there are loads of good places to eat including veggie/vegan food. Here is their menu just to tempt you Smile. www.vxbristol.com/menu/.

I am winging a lot bit here and making a beluga lentil ragu for spag bol. I thought I may have to get takeout myself but it actually tastes really good. Made an absolutely huge quantity though Confused so I hope it freezes OK!

babybobobear · 05/01/2018 18:08

The thing that surprised me most when I went vegan is how many things are actually vegan friendly which you would have never thought such as beef and tomato pot noodles and Oreos (yes my diet isn't great lol)

WhyDidIEatThat · 05/01/2018 18:38

If anyone ever comes across burrito sized tortillas anywhere please share! Mexgrocer do 12” vegan tortillas but have to buy in bulk - which is fine because make and freeze in bulk but would be good to get in smaller quantities sometimes

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2018 18:52

I have just eaten my lentil spag bol and I can honestly say I prefer it to the meat version. It was really good. Who knew?!

AdalindSchade · 05/01/2018 19:01

Aargh my skin has broken out in a massive patch of spots. I'm prone anyway and I ran out of the serum I use so it could be that. I was hoping going vegan would improve my skin! Grin I barely drink much soya milk but maybe that's the problem.

Vitalogy · 05/01/2018 19:02

I had Quorn chilli, pasta and garlic bread today.

MongerTruffle · 05/01/2018 19:04

I'm overjoyed that Starbucks have oat milk now!

Woolfrai · 05/01/2018 19:09

@MongerTruffle. There does seem to have been a break through in good milks at coffee chains recently! Coconut milk too. Oat milk and cashew milk are by far my favourites though. Delicious.

PrincessoftheSea · 05/01/2018 19:37

I paid £2 and downloaded the oh she glows app. Looks very good. I should be glowing by the end of next week right? Just having the app on my phone has given me a little glow I thinkSmile

PerditaNitt · 05/01/2018 19:38

Coming on to recommend the M&S beetroot and apple slaw vegan sandwich. Really nice to buy a ready made option which doesn’t involve yet more falafel and hummus!

Littlepig8834 · 05/01/2018 21:12

Vegan spag bol for tea, made the sauce in our slow cooker so it was super easy to do. Added some marmite to give it some depth and dried mushrooms. We often have this and enjoy it. Plus we have leftovers for lunch!

Discovered that ready made puff pastry is vegan so may be making a pie tomorrow.

maybeshesawomble · 05/01/2018 21:39

@HermanOrSheRa. Yes, I’ve got the Jerk Jackfruit so will let you know what it’s like. I bought the Sainsbury’s jackfruit yesterday and plan to have it for brunch tomorrow
