I'm new at veganing and I'd like ideas and somewhere to record my meals... please let me know what vegan food is on the menu in your house tonight (or eating out too actually) I am really interested 😊

So tonight I am making veggie chilli out of sweet potato/courgette/peppers/carrot/baby corn/kidney beans etc served with guacamole and tortilla chips. I have homemade vegan brownies for dessert.

Don't think I will miss meat/dairy at all Grin

heyhey here is the recipe
Gluten and Dairy free naan
500g gluten free self raising flour
4tsp sugar
1tsp salt
1tsp baking powder
4tbsp oil of choice
up to 300ml non dairy milk of choice

Place dry ingredients in a bowl, add oil and milk till a soft dough. Leave to rest for 10 min. I usually then divide mix into 4 or 6 balls and flatten on a lightly floured surface. Heat a frying pan on a med/high heat, dry no oil, cook a few min each side till lightly brown. You can brush with some melted non dairy spread but i don't bother.

Iamastonished · 25/03/2017 19:14

We are having one pot creamy garlic pasta with broccoli. The non vegans will have some parmesan with it.

AliceByTheMoon · 26/03/2017 08:50

Can I join?!

DH and I have been talking about going vegan for ages- we were years ago, but meat slipped back in.

DH used to hunt, shoot and fish, but is totally committed the other way now.

I'll veganise DS by stealth. :)

AliceByTheMoon · 26/03/2017 09:02

I am definitely up for those sweetcorn fritters, they look amazing.

Last night we had a green curry with tofu and green veg. Tonight I am not sure, but whatever happens we will be having a side of tomatos, cucumbers and jarred marinated artichoke salad with fresh basil.

I have a few of Dreena Burton's books. She brought up three DCs vegan and has some great recipes.

Hi alice of course - all welcome!

How old is your DS? I am stealth veganing two 12 year olds - DD is a commuted carnivore and DS has asd so is a bit restricted in his eating so I don't expect them to take to it 100% but I can definitely steer them know the vegan direction Grin

Thank you!

DS is 7 and has some issues around food also. But he has recently been (unprompted) asking me if the lamb we eat is the same as the lamb we coo over next door and 'why' do we eat it? Good question.

DS is not that great with spicy food so last night he had noodles in broth with broccoli and sugar snap peas and baby corn and ate it with relish which pleased me enormously.

Home made Pizza made with Asda garlic pizza bread with tomatoes, herbs, peppers, sweet corn, vegan quorn pieces and grated violife along with leafy green salad and McCain nacho cheese wedges. Making some vegetable soup for a healthier dinner tomorrow!

Vegetable Penang curry, rice noodles and Thai spiced crackers with raw brownies for afters. Yum!

AliceByTheMoon · 26/03/2017 19:04

Oh that pizza looks amazing.:) I love sweetcorn on pizza. There is a pizza place near us that do 'vegan' pizza which usually has jarred artichokes and black olives on it. With a bit of chilli oil.

We are having pasta with a plain tomato and herb pasta sauce - but I have just wizzed up a handful of walnuts into it to make it a little more interesting. :)

We unexpectedly ended up at a Harvester for lunch which was better than I'd have thought - I had a salad bar starter and then veg tagine with couscous from the four main options. The tagine was v rather than ve due to a sour cream dip which I didn't have. DH had veg jambalaya.

The wines and beers weren't marked as vegan so I did fall down a bit there, but overall not a bad experience considering we are very new to this and it wasn't where we'd planned to go.

kikisparks · 26/03/2017 20:00

Thanks Alice artichokes and pizza are an amazing combo for some reason I only get that when I'm out, could totally start adding it to my home made ones'

wejammin · 26/03/2017 23:48

Just placemarking really, as we went out for tea and I had a giant mushroom and rocket pizza (No cheese) from Prezzo. Brunch was my absolute favourite, mashed avocado on toast with salt, Tabasco and spring onion (in bed, for mother's day).

LaContessaDiPlump · 26/03/2017 23:52

For wine/beer when out and about, decent beers on tap are generally not vegan; however horrible soulless lagers like Fosters are generally fine Wink conversely, bottled decent beers (like Badger brewery) are more likely to be vegan than not!

As for wines - just assume they're not suitable, saves time. Alternatively you could have a lovely G&T!

Barnivore is helpful (www.barnivore.com/).

Spag Bol with soya mince went down fine for the kids and I stuffed aubergine with the Bol and baked it with breadcrumbs on top and had long stem broccoli on the side for DH and I. Lindt dark chocolate with seasalt has milk in it which is disappointing. Fortunately I had ikea almond thins as a backup snack which are fine Grin

We've had friends for dinner the last two nights - yesterday I did a carrot and chickpea tagine with cauliflower Moroccan couscous and courgette/gf brownies for pud. Tonight was smoked sweet potatoes, beyond burgers and an aubergine/lentil/bruschetta concoction with apple pie for desert. Dips and chips to nibble on beforehand for both (fig and olive dip and a shop bought one last night, good old guac and houmous tonight)

AliceByTheMoon · 27/03/2017 07:49

I love the idea of stuffing an aubergine.

Smoked sweet potatos? That sounds intriguing!

Tonight we are having tofu baked in the oven with cheese free basil pesto and green veg on the side. Ds is getting quorn chicken nuggets. I seriously doubt he will notice ...he loves th Aldi chicken chicken nuggets, and they are about the most tasteless things I have ever had so I think he will relish the animal-free version!

Fevertree · 27/03/2017 14:49

Hi all am really excited to find this thread. I finally went vegan about 3 weeks ago and all family meals are vegan. We have been having stir fry, lentil chilli with rice/ baked potato, lentil and veg curry, beans on toast, big salads with falafel and pitta, quorn fishless finger sandwich, soup, sandwiches. Xxx

wejammin · 27/03/2017 19:49

Tea was carrots cooked in coconut milk with spices, steamed green beans, basmati rice and tomato chutney. DS and DD mostly ate rice and green beans, and had soya yogurt with raspberries for pudding.

FauxFox · 27/03/2017 20:04

Kids had ikea veg balls chips and sweet corn for quick tea. They complained but ate it.
DH and I are having sweet and sour tofu and veg stir fry.

Oat milk appears to be acceptable to the kids for drinking on its own. I have switched to black tea and coffee because none of the milks really work for me. Almond milk is yummy on cereal though...not so keen on soya milk.

The baked tofu went down really well with DH and I. We had sweetcorn and sweet potato fries on the side.

TwentyCups · 27/03/2017 20:59

Spinach curry tonight at mine with chilli and garlic fried rice.
I'm constantly impressed by how delicious meals made from vegetables and whole grains can be!

Iamastonished · 27/03/2017 21:18

If anyone is in Sheffield there is an excellent vegan cafe called Make No Bones. It is very small, but the food is great.
