Colgate Total taken off me at airport security

If you’re flying, you might want to think twice about packing Colgate Total. Mine got flagged twice at airport security and was taken off me. The security guy said they’d already had 20 tubes taken off passengers that day! Makes you wonder what we’re actually cleaning our teeth with.

Why?

7238SM · 17/08/2026 18:59

Was it larger than 100ml?

titchy · 17/08/2026 18:59

Surely it was the size rather than the product which got it confiscated?

Whosthetabbynow · 17/08/2026 19:00

Nothing over 100ml

shineyshoess · 17/08/2026 19:00

Did he explain why?

NervousSheepy · 17/08/2026 19:01

Interesting, our different toothpaste flagged up and had to be scanned separately. Silly question, but I've noticed before that some of these tubes are 125ml, not the 100ml still required by some airports, could it be that?

SparklyBrickViper · 17/08/2026 19:01

Size matters

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:02

Nope UKlaws changed: you can take 2l liquids now, so all good! Colgate whitening fine bigger size! Left that. Colgate Total was only half a tube. ‘Explosive material components flagged’ were his words!

This is not the same for every airport.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/08/2026 19:05

I've had stuff removed from my little plastic bag and 'tested'. And something (can't remember what now) was taken away and binned. I think they test the PH, so maybe the toothpaste 'failed' that test?

Yeah I flew last week from Stansted and pretty sure was 100mls. And it’s the size of the container which matters, not how much actual product is in there.

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:05

Who knows, just letting you know for the those who want to pass through security quickly at this busy time of year.

No that’s right. At Stansted it’s 100ml max

Surely your toothpaste is in checked luggage? Maybe the rules are different for long haul?

Whosthetabbynow · 17/08/2026 19:12

Yeh as I said 100ml still at Stansted.

Laws for liquids have changed! New scanners are now at UK airports! Yahoooooo! Google it! https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/100ml-rule-at-uk-airport-security-new-scanners-avLDH4E9xSVg

Yes, the law has changed, but some airports don't have the up to date scanners so have to stick to the old rules for now.

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:13

Nope the U.K. airport I travelled from today took it from my hand luggage. I like to clean my teeth after eating as I have invisalign. Took it away as it was flagged twice.

Apparently everyone on here does a two week holiday with carry on luggage only. Fuck knows how.

This article says 3 airports (Heathrow, Edinburgh and Birmingham) allow up to 2L, and others are not yet up to speed with new scanners and so 100ml remains the rule.

Also worth remembering the return journey - lots of airports abroad still only allow 100ml. So have to check both ways.

But I’m off to check my toothpaste ingredients as that’s my toothpaste!

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:15

My airport was up today with new scanners! It was the ingredients that were flagged. My other bigger toothpaste tube was fine!

Why? Lots of people just travel with carryons nowadays.

^^This.

At UK airports with the new scanners it's now the higher limits but those without it's still old rules.

It's worth checking the airport's website to see which ruleset applies.

It seems unlikely that something specifically designed to go in people’s mouths would have a problematic pHConfused
