Colgate Total taken off me at airport security

If you’re flying, you might want to think twice about packing Colgate Total. Mine got flagged twice at airport security and was taken off me. The security guy said they’d already had 20 tubes taken off passengers that day! Makes you wonder what we’re actually cleaning our teeth with.

I flew with Colgate Total in my hand luggage earlier this year. Gatwick, Oslo & Bergen Airports all with no issues - but it was just a small “travel size” tube.

I love the way so many posters are telling the OP she went over the measurement allowance 🤦🏻‍♀️

IKR? Annoyingly lazy. 😄

No, not because of decanting it, despite decanting it.

Thank you! I knew I must have misunderstood something but couldn't work out what!

Were the wipes confiscated?

Apparently the new scanners can't scan silicone bottles. A lot of the small bottle packs you can buy for decanting toiletries into include silicone squeezy bottles.

Edited

No, she let me keep them.

For a week away?!

Yep! Totally do-able...

My Lidi sun cream (spray can ) 250ml was taken for testing at Bristol. New scanners so fine to take it through. I wondered if it was because it was a metal can, security guard said it was random? Colgate total 15 ml was ok.

However I forgot I had a tampon in my pocket and the security guard wanted to see that, pretty mortifying showing a group of security guards that.

I once had to explain the stash of tampons in the top picket of my hand luggage (easy access for in transit.) My German wasn't really up to the job and the male security guy just hadn't ever seen tampons before, especially not in English. Eventually, my explanation of "für Damen, monatlich," clicked, and he suddenly got hugely embarrassed and rushed me through.

I did think that security staff should have some basic training on things people might be carrying through, because of babies or dealing periods, incontinence, whatever, just so they have a starting point.

This is one of the horrible things about airports. You get a bunch of minimum wage oiks behaving as if they were your boss.

Have you considered that you and your perhaps less than sunny attitude might be the issue there?

Neither I or anyone I've ever travelled with has been treated like that

They are doing their job, which is protecting everyone flying out of that airport. Your attitude towards them stinks.

I treat everyone with respect. But there are def some security staff who are unnecessarily rude and abrupt with polite customers who are doing their best. I too work with the public (NHS) and would not dream of talking to people like this (though some of my colleagues can be rude which I abhor).

I flew out of Manchester last month, I had to have my feet swiped for drugs (??) and then my hand luggage got flagged for further examination. Before he'd even opened my bag, the security guard asked if I was carrying a Kindle. I said I was, and he said that was most likley the issue. I presented him with the Kindle, he swiped it for 'explosive particles', it passed the test and I was allowed my bag back!

It's kind of weird that we are allowed to take kindles and phones on planes. I get why, because you can't take people's phones away in this day and age, but its ironic that everything else is so tightly controlled but we are allowed Lithium ions on board, not because phone batteries are safer than a bag of lithium but just because they are so central to our lives now.

Apparently Colgate Total has high mineral density which airport scanners can interpret as explosives.

You never quite know what to expect, what goes through, what doesn't.

I took superglue, plastic cement + nail scissors through in with my toiletries - no questions asked.

(they were to go with my adult son along with other hobby items in his hold suitcase - but he had to cancel)

However I got swabbed after I forgot to take my watch off. May be there's a correlation between watch wearers and drug users?

Nail scissors with a blade less than 6cm are compliant.
