Colgate Total taken off me at airport security

If you’re flying, you might want to think twice about packing Colgate Total. Mine got flagged twice at airport security and was taken off me. The security guy said they’d already had 20 tubes taken off passengers that day! Makes you wonder what we’re actually cleaning our teeth with.

This is the same with 6+ calpol we had it taken off us at airport security. They said it gets flagged everytime.

Our Calpol was flagged and tested, but then returned to us. It was the baby version though, at Gatwick, earlier this year. Liquids allowed up to 2L and no need to put into plastic bags.

OneMentalBastard · 17/08/2026 22:39

These scanners are such a disappointment. You still have to keep to 100 MLS and they seem to be stopping loads of people post-scan, more than they used to stop . It's more of a faff than ever.

Also, every single fucking airport everywhere I've been in the last couple of years has a problem with my hrt gel, which isn't something I encountered previously.

Meanwhile, we can still take cigarette lighters on board, always have been able to. But not toothpaste.

Not necessarily.

I’m talking about Stansted

Aptapt · 17/08/2026 22:42

At Stansted airport, its still a 100ml limit. A 250ml pot of vaseline was detected and confisicated. It was in the front pocket of my suitcase and i didnt even realise it was there!

Surely your toothpaste is in checked luggage? Maybe the rules are different for long haul?

Do you think that travelers without checked in baggage dont brush their teeth? You don't have to check in bag regardless of how far youre flying I'd you're a light paxker

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:02

Nope UKlaws changed: you can take 2l liquids now, so all good! Colgate whitening fine bigger size! Left that. Colgate Total was only half a tube. ‘Explosive material components flagged’ were his words!

My stepdaughter had Savlon spray removed from her some years back. Think it was Gatwick. A similar reason was given.

You don’t. I took all my liquids through fine at Heathrow in March. The only exception was a bottle of water I’d refilled, which was fair enough

MyLuckyPeachOtter · 17/08/2026 22:53

I’ve just flown to Heathrow and back with a mini Colgate in my bag no problems. Strange that he said that though.

Surely, if your checked luggage got delayed or your flight got hugely delayed you would want toothpaste with you. I always have a small toothpaste in my carry on.

I had a bottle of “Matey” bubble bath confiscated about 25 years ago. In retrospect a torpedo shaped plastic bottle filled with gel may have been a bit suspicious in my hand luggage. Apparently it’s trace was very similar to Semtex.

ClairDeLaLune · 17/08/2026 23:16

My HRT gel was taken off me for testing, and luckily was returned to me. If they’d confiscated it, I would’ve been arrested for air rage!

OneMentalBastard · 17/08/2026 23:21

Yeah I've always had it returned so far. Lucky for them because I'm much more dangerous without it than with it. It's all such a farce though. Especially because like I say they've never stopped people from taking lighters on board, even though the incident that prompted this involved a liquid substance and a lighter. The liquid itself wouldn't have done anything.

One of the well known suncreams was removed from a friend's luggage due to the chemical ingredients it contains.
I cannot for the life of me remember which brand though!

Apparently everyone on here does a two week holiday with carry on luggage only. Fuck knows how.

Well for a family of four that brings it up to 40kg. My teens bring (small) clothes, two or three pairs of shoes, minimal toiletries and a couple of books in their luggage which gives me plenty of room to put a hairdryer, extra toiletries, light beach towels etc into their bags. We all carry hand luggage with books, electronics as well.

I'm sure I'd manage one 10kg bag though as I wash and re-wear clothes when I'm somewhere hot. I wasn't always like this though. During my twenties and thirties, I brought far too many clothes on holidays and didn't wear half of them.

This is not the same for every airport.

Presumably OP was at an airport with the new rules! Otherwise it wouldn't be remarkable that only Colgate total was confiscated!!! Sheesh Mumsnet is a dense place sometimes

Not everyone checks luggage for every flight!?

I love the way so many posters are telling the OP she went over the measurement allowance 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mumsnet can be very thick sometimes

User573359 · Yesterday 02:30

What is the tube made of? I remember the security alarm going on my carry-on and they asked me if I had Mitchum deodorant. I did, and they said that would be it, as the aluminium is so high in it and always sets it off. They didn't confiscate it though. It is quite concerning, however, no other deodorant works as well so I'm still using it.

Dovesono · Yesterday 03:26

Whosthetabbynow · 17/08/2026 22:39

The OP didn't say they were flying from Stansted. In fact they didn't even specify it was a London airport.

oliil4l · Yesterday 03:53

Didn’t the other side provide any reason for the confiscation?

Trompettes · Yesterday 04:54

It depends which airports have the new scanners. I took all liquids through at Heathrow and Rome with no problem. But not in East Asia.

nb full plastic water bottles are fine. Not the insulated double-walled ones.

Saddaughter999 · Yesterday 05:05

I was double checked for Lidl baby wipes too. And I'm pretty sure their new scanners is the problem. Lots of people at the same queue with me, wondering what is wrong with their toothpaste, shower gel or foundation.

Morepositivemum · Yesterday 05:28

Op just to warn you those rules changed in Ireland too and coming back from holidays two different friends got things taken off them so you may be able to get your toiletries out of the country but not in!!!!
