Colgate Total taken off me at airport security

If you’re flying, you might want to think twice about packing Colgate Total. Mine got flagged twice at airport security and was taken off me. The security guy said they’d already had 20 tubes taken off passengers that day! Makes you wonder what we’re actually cleaning our teeth with.

Which airport is this ?

PunksVersusBrats · 17/08/2026 19:17

Teen DS had his little bottle of Head and Shoulders tested this summer at Manchester. Maybe they though, "a sixteen year old boy? Washing? This can't be genuine!' 😆

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:18

@cafeconronI travelled from one on your list today! That one had the new scanners!

Ah well, who knows?! Dd's trainers had to be checked twice there and back this time, I was quite glad they weren't confiscated!

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:19

@PunksVersusBrats so funny!😆

Why? Lots of people just travel with carryons nowadays.

For a week away?!

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:20

@NervousSheepy that’s such a good story!!

I had a small unopened pot of M&S moisturiser taken off me and binned a few years ago. They said something in it was flagged up by their system. I alerted M&S in case they wanted to do something about it. They did send me a new pot to give them their due.

I think it was because they can light up.

Surely your toothpaste is in checked luggage? Maybe the rules are different for long haul?

No, rules for what goes through security OK are (and have to be) the same regardless of Longhaul or Shorthaul.

Only other issue here, as some have mentioned, is that there's something in the current Colgate formula that's triggering a warning if it's tested...

Laws for liquids have changed! New scanners are now at UK airports! Yahoooooo! Google it! https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/100ml-rule-at-uk-airport-security-new-scanners-avLDH4E9xSVg

Did you actually read this article you linked? It’s very clear it only applies to some UK airports.

silverbirches · 17/08/2026 19:23

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:02

Nope UKlaws changed: you can take 2l liquids now, so all good! Colgate whitening fine bigger size! Left that. Colgate Total was only half a tube. ‘Explosive material components flagged’ were his words!

Edited

MIL once had 'explosive material' confiscated when she was catching a flight to see family for Christmas. The culprit was a home-made Christmas pudding!

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:23

Yeah I flew last week from Stansted and pretty sure was 100mls. And it’s the size of the container which matters, not how much actual product is in there.

I have flown twice in the last 3 months once from Stansted once from Southend it's 2L now at Southend but you're right Stansted is still 100ml but no little plastic bags needed, the problem is the airports coming back are not the same so if you've not used things up you have to cram them in your suitcase. They did take DSs (very obviously not a gun) water pistol though

Not at each airport.

I’m willing to bet it was 125ml.

islingtontrial · 17/08/2026 19:25

I decanted some Roche posay sun cream into a 100ml squeezy bottle that I bought in boots and that was tested and taken off me too.

I'm glad it's not just me. I think if something is flagged, they test it, and if it's acidic or whatever they take it away. Lots of hair products are probably slightly acidic. And skincare, due to the acid mantel of the skin, or something? Oh, and glycolic acid toners maybe. So not dangerous, just doesn't past their rudimentary tests.

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:26

My colgate total was 100ml!

Blimey. Mind you, my own mum's contains A LOT of brandy so might well be a fire risk too 😬

Bjorkdidit · 17/08/2026 19:28

All UK airports have the new scanners but many still have the 100 ml rule.

So either the OP breached the limit or suddenly there's a detection problem with this brand of toothpaste.

Emiliana52 · 17/08/2026 19:29

My other colgate white 100ml was fine. Luckily!

You have to be careful at every airport every time you fly.

Manchester have changed it backwards and forwards and changed their criteria.

silverbirches · 17/08/2026 19:31

Are there nitrates or phosphorus in this particular toothpaste?

NewAchievement · 17/08/2026 19:35

Funnily enough we flew from Bristol last year which has the new rules. (Thank god) and my sun cream lotion got though no probs but my mate, who had decanted hers into a small 100ml bottle, as she didn’t know the new rules, had hers taken away and tested. It failed!

Same bloody suntan lotion!
