Airport security discarded ALL my frozen expressed milk before our flight

Nadsthakur · 12/07/2026 01:40

During security screening, approximately 25 ounces of my frozen expressed breast milk was confiscated and discarded. I was told that because it was frozen, it could not be tested and therefore could not be taken through security.

I explained several times that this milk was for my 8-month-old daughter, who is unable to latch and is exclusively fed expressed breast milk. This was not simply a drink or an inconvenience, it was my daughter's only prepared source of nutrition for our journey. Despite explaining this, I was told there was nothing that could be done, and I had to stand there and watch as the milk was thrown away.

I cannot put into words how upsetting this was. Expressing 25 ounces of breast milk takes an enormous amount of time, dedication and physical effort. It means pumping throughout the day and night, carefully storing every bottle and planning ahead. Every ounce represents hours of work. To have it thrown away in front of me, after explaining exactly how important it was, was absolutely heartbreaking.

What made the situation even worse was the attitude of the officers involved. Throughout the interaction, I felt they showed very little empathy or understanding of how serious this was. I was clearly distressed and repeatedly explained that they were taking away my baby's only food for our journey. Rather than trying to help, showing compassion or explaining whether there were any alternative screening options, my concerns were simply dismissed.

After my daughter's food had been thrown away, I was handed a customer feedback card and sent on my way. It genuinely felt as though nobody cared that an 8-month-old baby had just lost the only food I had prepared for her. The complete lack of compassion shown towards me as a mother was deeply upsetting and made an already distressing situation even worse.

Instead of looking forward to our holiday, I boarded an international flight feeling anxious and devastated, worrying about how I was going to feed my daughter while we were away. No parent should ever be put in that position.

Before travelling, I checked the guidance available to passengers. Ryanair's website clearly states that parents travelling with an infant can bring as much baby milk as needed for the flight, provided it is presented for inspection. I relied on this information when preparing for our journey. At no point was I made aware that frozen expressed breast milk could be refused because it could not be tested, and I was given no alternative option when I reached security.

I do not know the names of the officers involved, but im sure they can be identified through CCTV footage and staff rosters for the security checkpoint.
I want Manchester Airport to provide a full explanation of why my daughter's expressed breast milk was confiscated.
The specific policy or security procedure that required it to be discarded.
An explanation of why no alternative screening method. The time and physical effort it took to express and store it, and the significant distress, anxiety and disruption this caused to both me and my family.im supposed to enjoy my holiday and now im stressed in morroco about how I will feed her. She doesnt latch and only has expressed milk. Besides complaining to the Airport what else can I do so no other family goes through this.

This must have been distressing. I'm sorry you went through this. However, the error is entirely yours. Trying to find ways of punishing staff for doing their job, is not fair. This is also not a tiny baby; your child can eat other food so would not be starving.

Manchester airport is the shittiest airport in the UK. Last time I flew from there, the gate agents for my flight were yelling at and insulting the passengers waiting for our delayed flight. I never fly from there if I can help it.

Definitely complain at the highest level you can, OP, and put it on social media as well.

Her complaint will get nowhere because they followed the regulations for the UK.

You’ve flown from every airport in the UK? Really?

Did your child manage to feed the entire journey? Or did they end up starving?

No way! Tell us more 🤣

I’m not sure though as it was up ahead.
But it was bloody annoying as held things up because everyone was looking. She just wouldn’t accept the very simple rule. I can’t be sure but she had a baby and I definitely heard breast milk in her very raised voice!

Her complaint will get nowhere because they followed the regulations for the UK.

If they let it through by making an exception against the rules, I'd be making my own complaint about security. Even though I'm as pro-breastfeeding as you can be.

She is NOT delaying it with a baby of only 8 months old. What a stupid, ill informed comment.

I didn’t say fully weaned but most babies by 8 months are having some form of food. It isn’t their main source of nutrition but if OP was on a short haul flight had some breast milk in liquid form and was worried about baby being hungry some solids would have helped.

I’m assuming she would start expressing as soon as she could as even her frozen breast milk wouldn’t have covered the whole holiday

Soontobe60 · 12/07/2026 09:19

EyerollSeriously · 12/07/2026 02:23

No. She’s a breast-fed baby. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that she would continue pumping during the trip too. Hope that helps.

OP, I’m really sorry that happened, I would’ve found that so destroying as well.

Edited

So presumably she had a pump with her so could have expressed enough milk for a feed?

BakedPotatoBeansCheeseColeslaw · 12/07/2026 09:23

Airport security staff are dicks in my experience. There is simply no reason for them to be so rude, bellowing instructions at you, changing the instructions all the time - electronics in, electronics out, belt off, belt on, liquids in clear bag (pointless), or not now at Stansted.

I’m sorry you had this experience. I recently had a poor experience at Stansted where they were obsessed with my Nivea suncream. They kept taking my bag away, bringing it back, taking it away again, swabbing it, swabbing it again. No explanation of what or why. I eventually got sent on my way with the very normal suncream but it was quite a distressing 20 minutes being separated from your belongings, no communication when you haven’t done anything wrong.

Honestly I think they just enjoy the power trip. I wouldn’t mind so much if I could see the point in it all but there have been numerous research papers highlighting the ineffectiveness of their “safety” measures, it’s all theatre to try and make people feel safer or dissuade people. It doesn’t actually do anything.

I’m sorry this happened to you OP and I would be putting in a complaint.

ThatCyanCat · 12/07/2026 09:23

I'm a bit surprised at how many people seem to be very confident that air travel is very safe, but don't seem to understand why that is and how those levels of safety are maintained.

Let me guess

you think the police are jobsworth
teachers are lazy
and basically anyone with authority is a “dick”

Soontobe60 · 12/07/2026 09:24

LondonPapa · 12/07/2026 07:49

Frozen breast milk is not allowed in hand luggage as per UK hand luggage restrictions. If you had refrigerated breast milk, they would have let it through. You should have checked in your frozen breast milk.

Unfortunately, I do believe ‘security’ would do this with little care too. A bunch of AO/EOs on non-Civil Service contracts makes for a shit service.

Maybe the staff tried to explain why the Op couldn’t take frozen milk through but she didn’t accept what they were saying. Maybe she was shouting at them or telling them how ridiculous they were being with ridiculous rules? We don’t know do we. I know that having flown out of Manchester many many times, staff have always been polite, I’ve never witnessed them being anything but polite.

I definitely do not think that teachers are lazy!

I do think that a lot of police officers go into the job for the wrong reasons and that’s why we have issues with police brutality.

I understand they are there to do a job but there is simply no reason for them to be so rude about it.

She is being weaned but shes not really a big eater. Would only have few spoons of food. Mainly milk. Ive never given her formula. I had just enough for two feeds then I would need to express again. But travelling isn't easy with 3 other young kids too.

What was your plan for the return journey?

Really?

You got distressed because your suncream was being swabbed?

Like it or not these people are trusted with the safety and security of the thousands of people travelling through their airport. They’re trained to be on the lookout for threats and to do a job. They’re not there to be your mates.

OP has nothing to complain about.

Really distressing for you, sorry, OP.

Unfortunately it does say no frozen liquids so they were only doing their job.

You don't have grounds for a complaint.

Its not 'distressing', OP or her child havent been harmed.

Talk of 'empathy and compassion' through this thread are misdirected. These are security officers doing a high profile, pressurised, fast paced job. There isnt space or time for 'there there', OP didnt follow the rules so they're not going to be sympathetic or 'sorry', its on her.

Airports are a nightmare for all of us, they're stressful and busy and you have to be herded around and do what you're told. If you cant manage that (and my OH can no longer manage that) dont fly.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 12/07/2026 09:28

@Nadsthakur I appreciate the work involved in pumping, however this is not on the staff at Manchester. This is on you not doing the research ahead of time.

How are they to know you are not a terrorist with posion/explosives within the frozen pack?

They have to apply the rules across the board for everyone. They cannot make exceptions.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your milk and the time and effort it took you to make it.

Unfortunately airport security staff can be absolute jobsworths. How it's different to testing a laptop (also a solid object) I don't know.

It seems a daft rule to restrict frozen breast milk, especially given you could very easily have been allowed to defrost one for them to test. Heck even just the time taken to discuss this with them would have been enough for it to defrost enough to test.

I wonder if this is something the breastfeeding network or la leche league could challenge at a bigger and higher level?

Hope you were still able to enjoy your trip 😊

Laptops don't contain irregular and unpredictable crystal structures. Frozen liquids do.

This is complete nonsense. The staff do a really important and stressful job and they do not make up arbitrary rules. They implement the rules that apply to keep everyone safe.

But 25 years ago some terrorists hijacked some planes! Don't you see how vital these rules are for public safety!

Part of why they've not done it successfully since is the liquid rules.

No, because my things were taken away with no explanation. There was nothing wrong with them and I was made to feel like some kind of terrorist. I simple explanation of what they were doing, where they were taking my things, why and when I would get them back would have gone a long way. Airport security lines are stressful enough.
