Airport security discarded ALL my frozen expressed milk before our flight

During security screening, approximately 25 ounces of my frozen expressed breast milk was confiscated and discarded. I was told that because it was frozen, it could not be tested and therefore could not be taken through security.

I explained several times that this milk was for my 8-month-old daughter, who is unable to latch and is exclusively fed expressed breast milk. This was not simply a drink or an inconvenience, it was my daughter's only prepared source of nutrition for our journey. Despite explaining this, I was told there was nothing that could be done, and I had to stand there and watch as the milk was thrown away.

I cannot put into words how upsetting this was. Expressing 25 ounces of breast milk takes an enormous amount of time, dedication and physical effort. It means pumping throughout the day and night, carefully storing every bottle and planning ahead. Every ounce represents hours of work. To have it thrown away in front of me, after explaining exactly how important it was, was absolutely heartbreaking.

What made the situation even worse was the attitude of the officers involved. Throughout the interaction, I felt they showed very little empathy or understanding of how serious this was. I was clearly distressed and repeatedly explained that they were taking away my baby's only food for our journey. Rather than trying to help, showing compassion or explaining whether there were any alternative screening options, my concerns were simply dismissed.

After my daughter's food had been thrown away, I was handed a customer feedback card and sent on my way. It genuinely felt as though nobody cared that an 8-month-old baby had just lost the only food I had prepared for her. The complete lack of compassion shown towards me as a mother was deeply upsetting and made an already distressing situation even worse.

Instead of looking forward to our holiday, I boarded an international flight feeling anxious and devastated, worrying about how I was going to feed my daughter while we were away. No parent should ever be put in that position.

Before travelling, I checked the guidance available to passengers. Ryanair's website clearly states that parents travelling with an infant can bring as much baby milk as needed for the flight, provided it is presented for inspection. I relied on this information when preparing for our journey. At no point was I made aware that frozen expressed breast milk could be refused because it could not be tested, and I was given no alternative option when I reached security.

I do not know the names of the officers involved, but im sure they can be identified through CCTV footage and staff rosters for the security checkpoint.
I want Manchester Airport to provide a full explanation of why my daughter's expressed breast milk was confiscated.
The specific policy or security procedure that required it to be discarded.
An explanation of why no alternative screening method. The time and physical effort it took to express and store it, and the significant distress, anxiety and disruption this caused to both me and my family.im supposed to enjoy my holiday and now im stressed in morroco about how I will feed her. She doesnt latch and only has expressed milk. Besides complaining to the Airport what else can I do so no other family goes through this.

Not sure why you think the law shouldn’t apply to you?

hugasaurus · 12/07/2026 08:56

I understand how upsetting that would be. I had to pump for DD1 for quite some time and losing any of that milk was awful. But in this case I would be annoyed with myself but just would have bought some ready made formula for the immediate term, baby isn’t a newborn and is having solids now so using some formula wouldn’t have bothered me. Don’t let it ruin your trip.

They aren’t being ‘jobsworths’. These aren’t some petty rules akin to not going in a nightclub with trainers on. They have to follow the rules for very good reason.

The rules are clear, enough for the flight. Remember mum will still be producing milk so could feed from the breast on the flight or express on the flight.

warmdreams · 12/07/2026 08:58

I suspect this thread will rumble on for most of the day it I don’t think the OP will be back.

Petrolitis · 12/07/2026 08:58

Clearly airport security acted correctly but goodness it must have been so awful for you.

I would drop Ryanair a line asking them to put a further clarification on their website explaining that breast milk must be in liquid form. Might save someone else the same upset.

Thats quite a sensible thing to do.

I know it seems petty, and splitting hairs. But they will define milk as liquid, not a solid.

I’ve worked in food testing for decades and a lab can’t physically test a frozen solid product, a soft whip ice cream is the exception. Anything else has to be defrosted. On-site testing would be even more limited I’d imagine.

It’s a shame it wasn’t suggested to you to pop to the food hall, get a glass of hot water and defrost one of the milks in the cup of hot water, to make it suitable for testing. This is what I would have suggested to you in their position.

I think this is exactly what should happen, the OP asked to quickly defrost some in a hot cup.

And it could be tested frozen, all they need to do is chip off a bit, it would melt in seconds! I just don’t understand what the security risk difference actually is between frozen and liquid breast milk- does frozen breast milk resemble semtex? Then chip some off and test it FFS! I mean, how often is this an issue, that parents try to bring on frozen breast milk to feed their baby?

Im so sorry this happened OP, it’s frankly appalling they threw away all a baby’s food, that’s not on. When they could have asked you to defrost it first. Leaving a babe in arms to go hungry or assuming you can express enough in flight is pretty poor. And I would never want to fly with a hungry baby in the cabin. Glad you made it through and it’s helpful for others to learn about this too- I didn’t.

GreenAlgae · 12/07/2026 08:59

Ds couldn't have. He had allergies, including CMPA, and the only formula which he could have had is prescription only and tastes foul, so he wouldn't take it

Presumably that would have been known at the outset. If the baby had never had formula or cow's milk then you wouldn't know anyway. Not helpful, I know.
But you'd have known already.

Agreed she is quite literally crying over spilt milk

You’re not going to get any explanation other than the staff followed the rules and did their job. You can’t bring frozen breast milk through security.

Only correct response! Thank you!

Chenecinquantecinq · 12/07/2026 09:02

This is an airport with security rules did you check in advance if frozen was allowed? Why should you be the exception particularly where the issue is security.

She's stated baby won't latch.
So, pump on the flight?
Great. 😵‍💫
Needs must, I guess? 🤷‍♀️

Although, with my first dc I had to pump on schedule and took my pump everywhere and I remember sitting on the floor of a bathroom pumping as that was the only private/female/place I felt safe/comfortable to pull my breasts out. (I had almost forgotten that...)

Werhere · 12/07/2026 09:04

It was in an insulated container to keep it fresh wasn’t it @Nadsthakur ?

Notrainingbutpouring · 12/07/2026 09:05

Buttonspoons · 12/07/2026 08:18

What was the workaround for OP here?

Bring frozen on checked luggage? Use pump while on plane? Bring bm in one of those thermos style cups that keep liquids cool for hours? Plan a shorter flight/connecting flights so she has break. That’s all the work arounds I’ve come up with in ten seconds - just engage your brain and think for ten seconds. And if that’s a reach because critical thinking is in short supply, google it. Use AI. Ask someone like la leche league.

Werhere · 12/07/2026 09:06

If this is who im thinking… then I was in the security queue and the level of drama caused by the OP was insane

It’s very easy to find out.

You broke the rules, you got it thrown out.

What's wrong with taking 4 kids to Morocco?
What a stupid question.

Well the OP said herself that it was stressful! Taking 3 young children abroad, and a baby too. And going to Morocco will be harder than if she had just gone for a week in Spain to a resort.

So not a stupid question from @Jollyhockeystickss at all!

Pinkchickenwine · 12/07/2026 09:07

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/07/2026 08:53

Then their info should say that? That makes it even more confusing. 😵‍💫

Well anyone that read the Ryan air stuff as OP claims to knows it’s not allowed, if it’s their rules or airports it’s on their website, clearly stated.

Ss nevertheless it’s not allowed and was rightly disposed of! That’s it.

But keep clutching at those straws.

Not confusing at all, maybe some people just shouldn’t travel?

OP I'm so sorry. This is not right. I'm completely with you. This is about making sure your daughter has food. The irony in a country where mums are pressured through the roof to exclusively give breast milk. How are you supposed to win. I'm so impressed with your dedication to pumping etc you must be exhausted. Really hope you are getting some rest and have some opportunity to de-stress while you are away. Really sorry you've had to go through this. X

It’s not just this country every airport has the same rules. They are there for good reason and not just some way to piss off new mums.

wrongthinker · 12/07/2026 09:07

Manchester airport is the shittiest airport in the UK. Last time I flew from there, the gate agents for my flight were yelling at and insulting the passengers waiting for our delayed flight. I never fly from there if I can help it.

Definitely complain at the highest level you can, OP, and put it on social media as well.

Why? What did they do wrong? SM will give the same answers as here, the vast majority saying it’s her own fault and a few saying ridiculous things like this.
