Somewhere that is pretty and has something to look at like a cathedral, canal or river and you can spend a couple of hours just exploring?

Thinking mainly England for a day trip but other areas too for weekends.

I also like St Albans, the cathedral and Roman ruins.

RaraRachael · 26/02/2025 20:50

Stratford upon Avon although if can get extremely busy with tourists in the summer

Unless I've missed them, would add Great Malvern, Ledbury, Crickhowell (small but interesting), Dartmouth, Dunster, Clevedon, Marlborough, Stamford, Oundle, Oakham.

Beverley is lovely - nice minster, some very pretty independent shops, little streets, nice houses and architecture, big open fields, nice cafes.

I went to Barnard Castle today. It was lovely.

Sidebeforeself · 14/03/2025 18:37

Beverley is great
I am surprised so many people mention Chester. Been three times and each time I thought it was scruffy and quite a few druggies around. Also had appalling service in cafes and restaurants for some reason
York is beautiful but avoid high season for hens/stags and I do think the Harry Potter stuff is old and overdone now
Love Windsor

I like Bristol. Will be back and forth there a lot as my DD has moved there. You’ve got a decent selection of museums; the main museum (free) SS Great Britain ship and museum (not cheap but you can return as many times as you like in 12 months) M-shed (free), We The Curious (educational/science). Gutted they’ve closed the zoo though.

Ludlow is really pretty with a river, nice shops, a castle and it’s scenic. I was really impressed by Ironbridge too

4babycubsx · 14/03/2025 18:53

The last few years we've done:
Cambridge, great for live music bars, punting, tours round the stunning buildings.
Lincoln, probably the most beautiful cathedral I've seen, not a massive amount else to do but pretty all the same
Lancaster, brilliant little town, lots of nice bars and historical buildings. 5 mins away you have a lovely long beach at Morecambe, also eden project going there soon I think?

I'm following this post as we have really started enjoying our UK breaks

Abracadabra12345 · 14/03/2025 22:16

@4babycubsx
Im also following for the same reason as you. I’ve been to a fair few of the places mentioned but not Hereford, Worcester or Lancaster so those are ones to look into. We loved Stirling if the OP is ever up that way.

I adore Stratford upon Avon and go regularly, in and out of season. I like the vibe of summer when it’s at the height of its season, with happy holidaymakers soaking it all up, and I love low season too when it’s quiet
