Somewhere that is pretty and has something to look at like a cathedral, canal or river and you can spend a couple of hours just exploring?

Thinking mainly England for a day trip but other areas too for weekends.

Exeter is lovely too

I can't believe some people said Brighton. Please don't come here. It's shit!

York.
Son is at uni there. Will be sad when he moves on.

I like Rye , Bath , Brighton , Ludlow although in 2 of those the parking is absolutely dreadful .

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 22/02/2025 17:57

Ely, Rye

HappyChappieDappe · 22/02/2025 17:59

Definitely York. It's beautiful there.

macshoto · 22/02/2025 18:18

Not seen Ludlow or Shrewsbury mentioned yet.

Would echo the many recommendations for Chester, and also for Edinburgh - particularly the less touristy bits (i.e. away from the Royal Mile and Princes Street).

Shrewsbury is a good call.

I’ve only been to Ely once and it was a very long time ago. I remember being in awe of the cathedral, but there was very little to the town itself then. Sounds like I might need a return visit.

I love York, Bath and Lincoln. Basically old and/or cathedral towns. Oxford and Cambridge also nice but a nightmare to park.

Hay on Wye for the bookshops and antique market.

I went to Rochester on Monday and was shocked at how awful it is now. The High Street is dying. Really sad.

Bath
York
Durham

Chester is pretty much perfect for an easy stroll although you'll rarely be on your own and always avoid race days. You can almost encircle the city walking the walls. The river is lovely. There's a castle. A cathedral, Roman ruins and great shops.

Ludlow is small but perfectly formed and Durham has the most beautiful cathedral

Big ones- York, Bath, Chester, Brighton, Edinburgh etc.
Smaller but gems- Winchester Chichester, Salisbury. Not a couple of hours but Peebles is beautiful and Bromley has great shopping!

Bromley has great shopping? Are we talking about the same Bromley or is there another parallel universe? Bromley is awful. I live here and avoid the centre as much as I can!

hollyblueivy · 26/02/2025 07:23

I think Chester will have to be an overnight trip in the summer.

I agree. Brighton is a dirty shit hole.

Bath is lovely. Liverpool is brilliant. Berwick also a gem.

I was in Chichester for the first time recently, and really enjoyed it — the Pallant House gallery has an astonishing collection of 20thc British art, and the cathedral is a great combination of old tombs and memorials (including Philip Larkin’s Arundel Tomb) and modern art (Chagall window, Graham Sutherland crucifixion, Elizabeth Frank sculpture etc), plus the walls walk was very pleasant.

PermanentTemporary · 26/02/2025 07:57

Another vote for Rochester.

Is this true about Brighton being a dirty shithole or are you trying to put off tourists 😁 I've never been and was thinking of visiting.
