Somewhere that is pretty and has something to look at like a cathedral, canal or river and you can spend a couple of hours just exploring?

Thinking mainly England for a day trip but other areas too for weekends.

York, lovely city to walk around and you can walk on the city walls for some amazing views. However avoid the shambles street unless early or late, because the queue for the ghost shop has ruined it.
A walk along the river is beautiful in the autumn at Durham.
Skipton is beautiful can walk along the canal and thru the woods.

AnotherVice · 26/02/2025 08:15

Arundel?

RabbitsRock · 26/02/2025 08:17

Lincoln Cathedral is beautiful but I can’t remember what the town is like.

Chester is pretty much perfect for an easy stroll although you'll rarely be on your own and always avoid race days. You can almost encircle the city walking the walls. The river is lovely. There's a castle. A cathedral, Roman ruins and great shops.

Ludlow is small but perfectly formed and Durham has the most beautiful cathedral

And avoid race days, Saturdays and events (ice trail, Christmas markets etc) in York too.

So, so busy, full of hen/stag do’s and race days there are too many drunken people.
The events are just rammed.

If you’re selective about where to avoid, Portsmouth & Southsea. Follow the Millenium trail (what’s left of it) from the hard (Portsmouth Harbour train station), round gunwharf quays, up round old Portsmouth (including cathedral) southsea common, finish at the tenth hole cafe for the best selection of cake you’ll ever see. Many, many historical sites and visitor attractions along the way.

lots of the sea front is being reinforced at the moment though so might be worth putting off til 2026.

I'm biased but definitely Liverpool. I still get blown away by how beautiful it is here.

I'm not sure I'd recommend Chester, I've been there a couple of times this year and the moment the sun goes down there's open drug-taking on the streets and the main subway is impassible really. I was shocked. Don't stay after dark!

I went to Rochester on Monday and was shocked at how awful it is now. The High Street is dying. Really sad.

Oh really? I loved it for the Dickens connection. Walking around the old buildings in the back streets at dusk was lovely. Also enjoyed the Cathedral & Castle.

Can't believe Harrogate hasn't had a mention yet.

More votes for Newcastle and Oxford. I liked Cardiff too when I last visited, but that was pre-Covid. I don't know if it has changed much since.

If you like a seaside town, Folkestone is up and coming these days and Steep Street and the Harbour Arm are really good for a wander, plus you get the beach too. I'd add another vote for Faversham as well. Quite small but you can head out to the marshes for a longer walk. Morpeth is a good place for a wander in Northumbria.

Cambridge, Winchester, Windsor and Bath are overrated in my opinion and so touristy. With all of them you can get decent walks in along their respective rivers, but I think all three are overcrowded.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/02/2025 11:00

Agree with so many of these. Has anybody mentioned Totnes?

I think Brighton is a dump @CerealPosterHere but day trippers flock there so I must be missing something!

Lincoln Cathedral is beautiful but I can’t remember what the town is like.

theres some nice independent shops at the top of the hill and along the hill. Then at the bottom of the hill it’s pretty much a standard town centre, some nice restaurants. You were maybe traumatised by walking back up Steep Hill and have blocked it out your mind? 😆

Eyerollexpert · 26/02/2025 17:54

Come to the North West. Liverpool. Manchester, Skipton, Clitheroe, Haworth, Ribchester and Pendle witch country with Lancaster. To mention just a few. Also lots of coastline.

Suggestions of places that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

Gloucester/Cheltenham - Gloucester has a beautiful cathedral and converted docks; up the road Cheltenham has Georgian architecture and shopping.

Cirencester - Roman museum, medieval church & nice town for pootling.

Hastings/Battle - Abbey, castle and lovely walks.

Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold or Broadway - small market towns with great eateries and independent shops.

Picle · 26/02/2025 18:58

Bradford on Avon

Chichester

Bath - easy to get lost though!

Alnwick

Bishop Auckland and surrounding area
