Somewhere that is pretty and has something to look at like a cathedral, canal or river and you can spend a couple of hours just exploring?

Thinking mainly England for a day trip but other areas too for weekends.

Whereabouts in the country are you?

Cambridge
Canterbury
York
Bath
Oxford
Rye
Brighton

I loved Peterborough cathedral, although Peterborough itself isn't very big.

JassyRadlett · 21/02/2025 09:04

I used to love York for this but it's so often absolutely packed with tourists now.

Some of the usual suspects - Bath, Winchester - are always enjoyable for this sort of thing. Norwich is a bit out of the way but lovely to walk around - the river winds around the centre and the cathedral is excellent.

I really rate Ripon too, and the cathedral in particular is worth exploring. Ditto Hereford, which is lovely. Ludlow is nice, especially on market day.

Big ones- York, Bath, Chester, Brighton, Edinburgh etc.
Smaller but gems- Winchester Chichester, Salisbury. Not a couple of hours but Peebles is beautiful and Bromley has great shopping!

I have recently found a new love for Canterbury. I live about 45 mins away and often go shopping there. I had a walk in the summer through the gorgeous old back streets, round the cathedral and then down to Westgate Gardens which runs alongside the river and it was gorgeous. I've been back several times since then and surprised by how much I've fallen back in love with it.

I also love wandering around Oxford, gorgeous place.

I like coastal towns, so you can have a pootle around the shops and then a walk along sea front.

Whitstable
Cromer
Broadstairs
Deal
Worthing

I'm in the bottom part of the country so a few of the repeated locations are the ones that are my general go to places. It's good to see some other places nearer and further afield as I don't mind travelling.

Windsor I think could be next on the list.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but Richmond appeals also.

Bath

Stratford upon Avon

Lichfield isn't terribly exciting but it's close to us and I can usually manage to find a book or three in the charity shops

I like to choose an area of London and spend a day or half a day there - Highgate / Hamstead / Richmond for example / a walk down the river Wapping way and a pub lunch

InWithThePlums · 22/02/2025 16:54

Chester definitely

wonderstuff · 22/02/2025 17:00

Guildford
Winchester
London (we are on the Waterloo route for trains and Southbank Soho and Covent Gdn are all walkable from there).
Norwich, Brighton, Edinburgh all a long way from me but lovely if you’re that way.

saveforthat · 22/02/2025 17:03

Wells is really lovely. Big cathedral, lovely walks. Market if you go on the right day and a fantastic independent Italian restaurant.

MoggetsCollar · 22/02/2025 17:09

Sherborne is good for a few hours if you are within reach- it has two castles, a lovely abbey, a museum, an art gallery (The Sherborne) and a medieval high street. Plenty of cafes, independent shops and a great farmers' market if you hit the right day.

SkaterGrrrrl · 22/02/2025 17:16

Bath or Edinburgh!

taxguru · 22/02/2025 17:17

Definitely York. Nice relatively small city with lots to do, lots of history, and the locals are remarkably friendly.

Threewordseightletters · 22/02/2025 17:20

Not yet mentioned and a real gem is Ely.

Ripon is a lovely small city, with a large, newly refurbed hotel too.

Some fantastic indies (shop, restaurants, cafes and bars) as well as great parks, the cathedral and a racecourse.

Harrogate is also good.
