I’ll start. DH’s Sister & BIL asking DH to pick them up from the airport this evening.

No big deal you might think, except they live exactly 3km from the airport, their house is about 100m from a stop for the airport bus that goes every 15 minutes, they don’t have luggage to carry and are a family of 4 healthy adults with no mobility problems. A taxi door to door would likely be the same if not less than 4 x the bus fare.

Meanwhile we live almost an hour’s round trip along winding country lanes from the airport, in the opposite direction, and have to empty the car of isofix car seat / pram etc to get them all in.

I don’t know whether I’m more aghast that they’ve thought it reasonable to ask, or that he’s thought it reasonable to agree. Should I LTB?

suggests you don’t want him to 🤷‍♀️

No it doesn’t. OP is amazed and amused at the sheer effrontery but it doesn’t affect her. Her DH was free to agree or not. The OP just eye rolls. As would I.

I’d be a little 🤔 at my husband but obviously they’re very close

A close friend of mine recently died , I shared his funeral arrangements on Facebook. Another friend said "if you need a lift to the funeral I can drive "
A lady who I vaguely know jumped in and said yes please I'll have a lift ...... ERM. Really think he was asking me :)

AralVorkosigan · 30/09/2026 08:52

BIL often visits our city for work (self employed) so stays in our spare room so he gets to see us and the kids.

Generally he texts asking if a particular day is ok, occasionally SIL has texted asking.

She texted last week asking for a date in a few weeks, I confirmed that’s fine, she then replied saying great she’s let her friend (who I’ve never met or heard of) know that the room is free that night, the friend is visiting with her 17 year old son to look round the university, they’re fine to share the room but he’ll need the blow up mattress.

She is very annoyed that I have told her no chance I’m letting total strangers (including a basically adult male) stay in my home.

flowerkiller · 30/09/2026 08:56

We had neighbour who were always after a little borrow of something. The odd dishwasher tab or toilet roll, little things really. Then last year we mentioned we were going away for a couple of weeks and could she put our wheels bin down for us. She says yes no problem at all.

just as our airport taxi pulls up she asks if we can lend her our car while we are away seeing as it will just be parked up on the drive!. I don’t understand the cheek of some people

Yes that’s some massive CFery!! I would be embarrassed to ask! I really don’t get what goes through people’s head sometimes. Oh well, you get an hours peace with DH out the house!

Me too. I don’t understand the whole ‘lifts to the airport’ thing. People manage to get through the rest of their lives without asking for lifts. But even though airports are usually well served by public transport, so many people will ask friends or family for a lift to the airport. It’s as though they think buses, trains and taxis don’t go there.

Laying in bed with my 5 year old daughter.
Daughter gathers her teddies and gives them to me.
"Mummy on our way downstairs can you pop these on my bed thankyou"
Me. "Why cant you do it yourself?"
Her "i just feel like you would like to do me a favour"

Cheeky madam

Thats so cute 😍 😆

And leaving you on a weekend with the kids so he can go off on a solo trip to do this?

It was an hours trip not a week in Benidorm 😅
But still CFs though

Don’t get me wrong I’ve willingly done many an airport lift in my time (transport to the airport not so great to some local areas and taxis outside of standard daytime hours are £££) but the circumstances of this one tickled me! I wouldn’t in a million years dream of asking someone that lived much further away from the airport than I do.

From reading Mn, I conclude it’s because some people (or at least some Mners) regard holidays as sources of unbelievable stress, from the moment they click ‘Book’ or put their first pair of socks in a suitcase, and the airport basically is a place of torture.

So for them, asking for a lift to the airport isn’t ’Please put yourself out to give me a wholly unnecessary lift to the airport, when I could easily get there on public transport, via taxi or by driving and leaving my car there while I’m away on an optional trip entirely for my pleasure’.

What they think they’re asking for is the equivalent of a lift to the hospital for a necessary surgery they’re really stressed and nervous about.

Dragonfly97 · 30/09/2026 09:28

A neighbour asked if she could put some rubbish in our bin, as her adult son ( who lives away) had brought some of his rubbish and filled her bin. She has 2 bins. We have one small bin, which was full, so I said no. Thought it was a bit cheeky when she has 2 bins for some reason, one small, the same as ours, and a large one.

What, do a two hour round trip in the middle of the night to save someone paying a £12 taxi fare to drive 3 miles. Because I’m not a bloody doormat, that’s why!

problembottom · 30/09/2026 09:44

Haha your post reminds me of one of my SILs.

We live very near an airport which is a northern hub. After I moved in with DP I had a friend coming up from London to stay for the weekend. SIL then told him she was taking an early flight from the airport that weekend (she lives a couple of hours away) so would be using our spare room.

Despite DP explaining I had a friend staying SIL proceeded to arrive in the middle of the night anyway and her miserable family of four sat in our living room until the early hours, when DP drove them to the airport. So weird.

She pulled a few similar stunts after that - DP works away loads and I think she'd gotten used to using his house as she pleased and was pissed off I was there every weekend with my friends and family popping in and out. She spent the first couple of years I lived there totally blanking me in my own home until I told DP who seemed terrified of her he could either sort it out or I would.

My retired parents booked and paid for two apartments on holiday as a treat for us, our partners and children. Three bedrooms in apartment A and two in apartment B, to accommodate three couples, a single adult, 3 young children (aged 3-6) and a baby under 1 year old in a cot (i.e 10 people). Each room slept two (in single beds) so should have been plenty of beds to go round. Only that SIL insisted that the single adult should not stay in “their” apartment because their PFB (of school age) should have their own room and not have to share with a relative.

So the 3yo had to sleep with their parent in a single bed because no one had the balls to stand up to her.

booksnbaking · 30/09/2026 09:55

@problembottom You can’t leave us hanging! Did you sort it out or did he? Is your weird SIL still talking to you?

(Invested because at the moment my life is quite boring BUT also a CF-free zone, touch wood)

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 30/09/2026 09:55

I visited a popular city to stay with a friend and we ended up on a hen do. I got talking to a woman there who then added me on Facebook.

Fast forward to a few months later I get a random message from her.

"Hey hunny. I was thinking it would be lovely to catch uo. Why don't I come and visit with the dc's"

I realised she had assumed I lived in the popular town rather than the rather grim mining village I actually live in and just fancied a free holiday.

So I played along and sent this back

" Hi sweetie. Omg, yes that would be fantastic. I actually live in 'grim town' rather than 'really popular town' but it would be soooo lovely to catch up. Let me know when you are thinking so I can get the spare room ready"

I never heard from the cheeky bint again and she deleted me off Facebook a few weeks later

So that is why the OP is pissed off I reckon.

No wonder! That’s a wild thing to agree to.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 30/09/2026 10:00

So not sure if this is CFery or me just being a mug. Probably the latter. I looked after a ‘friend’s boys or 4 years - 3 nights a week in term time and they lived-in at my home for 6-10 weeks (In 7-14 day stints) when she travelled with her job or visited her dying mother in France, post divorce as the ex was useless. For free. Because the boys were sofa surfing when she was away and I felt they should have stability.

Then Covid happened - no travel, WFH so no help needed - but one of my DC had severe MH issues arising from AuDHD and gender issues and I would have appreciated the emotional support of being at the end of the phone at least. Did not hear from ‘friend’ ever again once lock down announced. Not a dicky bird since 2020.

Her youngest is now 18, but in the last 6 years she has continued to ask friends for lifts and help with her boys to footie and cricket etc. They know what she did though and give her the cold shoulder. She relied on the innocent mugs.

Thing is, for her boys, I’d still do it all again. I just wouldn’t emotionally invest in her. So, yeah - she was a CF and I was [am] a mug.

My husband is an amazing baker , a family member of mine asked him to do two large deserts for her daughters party , he did a fabulous pavalova and a huge banoffee pie caramel etc all home made ) he asked her a few weeks later if the guests enjoyed the deserts “ they were a bit sweet she said” no thank you , bottle of wine etc

This. The ‘make life easier’ sentiment would be all very well if the ‘make life harder’ people would stop taking the royal piss.

A few years ago now, so I'm not sure if this counts: I was a student at a University and was approached in the library one day by another student. He asked would I write his thesis for him. I thought at first he meant proof read, which I might have done. But no - he meant come up with ideas from my own head and write them down so that he could pass it off as his own work.

really???
