To answer your question, there has been no parade on Garvaghy Road for 28 years, since 1997.
This is a deeply Catholic enclave, but within a largely Protestant area.
Due to what awful evebts happened in 1997, involving the murder of 21, including 3 young brothers and 10 x Catholic Churches being set alight, the Parades Commission have declined requests for the Orange March (Protestants/Prebytsrians) as its so contentious.
Yetvthey have applied every year, to make their point, sensibly their requests have been refused.
The Parades Commission declined again this year, BUT….
Fir reasons nobody of sound mind from either side will understand, at about 2am this morning, the High Court overturned the decision, instructing that the Orange March must happen no later than 8.30am
They assembled at a church at 8am but are yet to be permitted to March due to the PSNI stating they’re unable to facilitate it as there are 1000’s of residents and protestors linking arms blocking the road since late last night, despite torrential rain.
Neither side are backing down and both crowds growing in nimber.
Both sides have bussed crowds in.
Riot police are on site but not enough in number to move protestors or remove Orange men and their crowd.
Sun is now out.
Unhelpfully many senior politicians have publicly sided with crowds, one wearing a Rangers jacket (fgs) and Sinn Fein are adamant this March won’t happen.
if police in riot gear attempt to move Catholic protesters it’s safe to say any chance of a united Ireland will be decimated.
Yet the Orange men are insisting the “rule of law” be applied and are behaving as if these folks are all of the “help your granny across the street vsriety”. They’re not.
Neither are many being bussed in wearing balaclavas for the Catholic side.
I doubt this will end well, it’s impossible for authorities to make decisions as any decision is likely to result in a bloodbath riot.
This is a simplified explanation but I hope this helps.
