Yeah they would not be what anyone would ever class the most law abiding among us.

I didn’t mean that actually, but more that they don’t recognise the authority of British courts in NI & have never hidden that fact.

@Hopeitsokaytomorrow
‘The people wanting to march at the moment see themselves as British, not Irish (although they may accept an Irish passport for ease of travel!).’

NI voted to remain in the EU and yet the DUP supported and liaised with Teresa May for Brexit. The fact that any unionists/loyalists voted against freedom of movement for everyone else but then apply for EU passports for their own ‘ease of travel’ shows who they are.

That's what I was trying to say.
Not that I'm not advocating any of it, just trying to make the point that most of the rest of the UK really don't care much.

I think everyone knows that already though.

hi all. i have been a 'voyeur' on mumsnet for years and lost/forgot my login details years ago but felt compelled to reregister today because of this particular post. I am fro the garvaghy road, portadown. Born and reared. I have experienced first hand the violence and intimidation caused by the Orange Order. I even wrote my uni dissertation on it! the organisation itself should be banned/outlawed never mind this current march. It is nothing more than a hate filled, sectarian, white supremist organisation. Even members who are more 'liberal' are members simply because they hate catholics or indeed anyone who aren't like them. The OO were founded in the 1790's , not too far away from where I live, and it has been a constant hot bed of sectarian violence ever since. I rmember dreading the start of parading season every summer because of heavy police presence brought in to protect them and ensure they were facilitated to supreme over us. There is so much I could say but felt compelled to write this much even to try and reach out to people who are rightly confused and baffled by what is going on. It baffles me.

Hello @mumjustdoingherbest , pleased you feel able to speak and give your perspective from the area. How is it now, has it died down a bit or still tense and lots of people about? It's dropped off the news cycle a bit, or at least it has here in England.

Your experience of being there as a child is insightful. It must have been terrifying at times. I'm so sorry. 💐

Whilst it is quiet on the road today, there continues to be a presence both on the road and up at the church, both of which i can see for my house. There is a sense of simmering tension and waiting for the situation to implode, which it could do at any moment. The repurcussions are horrendous and far reaching but the OO seem to want Stormont to collapse and have in fact been outspoken about this. They really cant accept the idea of Sinn Fein being in governement. It sticks in their craw! I am not in favour of Sinn Fein myself, am more liberal in my beliefs but feel very strongly that what is going on no and went on in the past is just so wrong.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 29/09/2026 15:37

That the OO want Stormont to collapse rather than being willing to take the difficult way forward of power-sharing is very telling. I'm no fan of Sinn Fein but I do think they've come a long way from their past now.

Whereas the OO just seem, as you say, to want to stir the past up.

I hope things diffuse soon. God knows there's enough trouble in the world without stiring up Northern Ireland again.

Shloopie · 29/09/2026 18:35

It feels like the DUP and OO lose relevance in NI by the day. Lots of people who in the past might have been part of their demographic want little to do with their divisive antics. They've had Jeffrey Donaldson found guilty of multiple counts of child sex abuse, they hated that the Fleadh was held in Belfast and they really hated that people from all communities got stuck into the Fleadh ensuring its success, they've had old Trump saying he thinks their should be a United Ireland. Basically they're spiralling.

The parades commission were finding this whole peace malarkey a bit boring so decided to spice it up a bit by sanctioning an orange order parade (proddys) through the Catholic garvaghy road for the first time in 28 years.

Absolutely, well put!
