What normal question do you hate being asked?

timple · Yesterday 18:39

Maybe not a normal question but to me it's anything to do with my first relationship. It's come up many times in different ways.

I was on a Hen do and we were playing games and it was 'whoever lost their virginity the latest has to take a shot'

It was me, I was 19 and it wasn't consensual. It was an abusive relationship. So I don't know whether to count that or the sleazy boyfriend I had right after aged 20.

It comes up very occasionally 'have you ever dated a scotsman?" Yes, my abuser but I can't say that so I just lied and said no.

"How old were you when you had your first relationship?" again the dreaded question.

I asked a lady who was telling me about her son the other day how many kids she had. She told me that just one as her other had died.

How many children I have.

I had two but DD died, people looked so uncomfortable if I said two but DD died I stopped saying it and said I just had one. Then I thought I’m not denying she existed so they just have to tolerate their discomfort,

“Why aren’t you married? It’s been eleven years!”

Fuck off is the answer.

I hate being asked 10 times a day ‘what part of America are you from’.

So ignorant. So I say Toronto and watch them figure it out and look uncomfortable.

Just say ‘I detect an accent where is it from’.

When I lived and worked in Canada for a while my work colleagues kept drumming it into me that Canada was in America too.

For example, when I said I wanted to go to America on holidays they told me I was already there, and so on.

As a multi bereaved parent I hate being asked how many children I have.
ig I tell the truth, people are horrified and can’t get away fast enough. It’s a real conversation stopper.
if I tell a white lie, I feel guilty and sad that I’m not including all my children.

Sorry for your losses ,my DW has the same her boys are gone one in infancy the other in his 20s.

I DO like music, but I can't answer this question. Or about a favourite anything, no favourite song, film, book, nothing...

I agree. I hate the ‘favourite’ question as I like lots of books and music and films equally. I just end up making something up which I can’t remember again. Same as colours.

i want your to know you are absolutely not “less than”. I have 4 children and when our cleaner comes I always tell me children “this is name she helps me get to spend time with you and makes the house lovely and clean to help Mummy”

Our lovely cleaner is a treasure and I am so grateful for her business model, skills, time management, foresight and dedication to her job.

do not ever, EVER feel less than. Your job is so pivotal and important and you give families the gift of a reduced mental load and time with our children and that is utterly priceless

What a lovely post. Thank you so much for saying that. It's actually made me quite emotional. I'll go to work today with my head held high. Thank you x

What are you eating?

Especially at work when people loom over me and make comments about my lunch. I don’t know why it bothers me so much.

Have you lost weight?

This throughout my life I've hated this question with a passion, particularly if I have lost weight but also if I haven't

Plus nowadays ' How is your DS?'

The truth is he is is 23 has barely left the house in nearly 4 years, is awake at all hours with absolutely no routine and has recently started talking gibberish to himself loudly and almost constantly yet absolutely refuses to get any help or speak to a medical professional. The unbearable sadness that overwhelms me when asked about him is hard to disguise and often embarrassing when talking to strangers, even if it don't actually say anything other than an airy" oh he's fine"

this is why i go to a hairdresser who doesnt ask questions

oh yes,
there was a rude woman, i presume on a diet, who was derogatory about my pasta salad and you should have seen the look she gave when I ate a slice of cake.
it is your diet, not mine,
i started eating elsewhere after that

pilates · Today 06:48

Did you have a good weekend?

I then feel obliged to ask back and I am not the slightest bit interested.

itsgettingweird · Today 06:57

Why don’t you drink?

For almost identical purposes to you OP.

My first sexual encounter was being raped at 19 when I’d been drinking.

I don’t feel safe being drunk.

Sorry you went through that and I totally understand why those question make you catch your breath.

and reading is my hobby!

I feel similarly if anyone asks about DD2, she has severe depression and doesn’t like to leave the house. She’d hate me to talk about her so I don’t do it and just say she’s fine.

Anything about my love life… I have a short but shitty history that’s enough to put me off ever trying again. I’m single and embracing it but that isn’t the answer people want to hear.

Lentilcakes · Today 07:56

Dating history/losing virginity.

I lost it fairly late with a horrible bloke who pretty much coerced me in to it. I wouldn’t say rape but it wasn’t a pleasant experience. A few weeks later i met DH. No-one asks it now I’m in my 50s but a few years ago I was w some women (some I knew/some were friends of friends and we were pissed and got on the subject).

Now it’s people excessively asking me about my health. It’s shit and I don’t like talking about it much. People are being nice so I just say ‘it’s boring let’s talk about something else.’ and move on.

@timple- reading isn’t boring! It’s my main hobby.
