VB's dress on Mrs Burnham - horrible

I'm not a fashion expert and I really don't care much for it but this was the most horrible dress I have ever seen. Even on a coathangar bodytype like VB herself it wouldn't look good but on an average body it's just hideous. That's 850 £ unwisely spent. She could and should have gotten a dress from M&S for 50£ and actually looked good.

For god sake slagging off a woman for what she is wearing. I quite like it, but regardless I would rather wear a crappy dress than start a thread bitching about other women. Just unpleasant.

This is tiresome. Not Mrs Burnham and not Mrs Heel. I think you're being disingenious- we all know who we are talking about.

I find it quite hurtful the way you are mocking my taste. But I suppose it's only famous people's feelings that are important.

I think the dresses you have picked are hideous, you take offence at people mocking your choices, whilst mocking a woman who has to face the world press. I would have never said anything about your selection had you not been so utterly hypocritical.

VoteForCountBinface · 21/07/2026 01:20

The dress is just all kinds of wrong.

LBFseBrom · 21/07/2026 01:45

I think the dress is OK but could have been looser around the abdomen.

‘Sisters’ FFS. She’s now in the public eye. I don’t think saying an outfit doesn’t suit someone is betraying any bollocky ‘sisterhood’.

We comment on fashion because it’s visible, not because we dislike the person. There’s a difference between discussing a dress and attacking someone’s character or appearance.

She wore a bad dress that did her no favours. People are going to comment. It’s human nature.

She’s now in the public eye. '

  • why is what she wears relevant though? Or Ms Murthy's , for that matter, as she got flack too?

We're not in the Victorian age where powerful men's wives tended to focus on supporting their career. Ms Van Heel and Ms Murthy etc both had their own careers, kids to raise etc They weren't professional political wives, I don't see why they should be scrutinised. We're not like the US where the First Lady is a job in its own right.

How is he a hypocrite for his wife's choice of dress? She may have bought it with her own money, or borrowed it or rented it? I don't think he has a say in the clothes that his wife wears. I think she deliberately chose a British designer, other than that the style and colour, etc. was up to her.

Yes. He wants to be “one of the people” then his wife needs to stop wafting around in a dress more than many people’s rent for the month.

How strange when VB's fashion business is totally build on vanity and pretentiousness. She couldn't have chosen a dress more symbolic of such superficialness. People in the public eye can should be talked about. It's an odd choice of dress, not rocket science, not that deep and thanks nor virtue signalling needed.

VB's fashion business is totally build on vanity and pretentiousness.'

  • doesn't that describe most fashion businesses?
Jane379 · 21/07/2026 02:03

I do wonder if VB was maybe a non ideal choice due to the recent controversy with Brooklyn etc but no one really knows the backstory & plenty of designers were & are unpleasant people.

SummerPeonies2026 · 20/07/2026 22:16

Oh and it’s worth moting that Boris and his wife were truly torn to shreds endlessly and much more ruthlessly on here, and the very same hypocrites now on here complaining! It’s staggering.

I don't think Carrie Symonds' dress sense should have been criticised either. She was his wife, not in a political role.

Otoh I support mockery of Boris' hair as he DID choose - and court- the limelight as a politician.

I also think Symonds may have drawn more dislike due to her role as OW when he was still married to Marina Wheeler (who I do like somewhat after reading the book about her mother's life, The Lost Homestead). Still, that's no excuse for dress nastiness.

Clearly people's political leanings are interfering with their logic in this thread.

Do you ask your husband for permission before you choose a dress?
Do you think that politicians should only represent the interests of low income earners?

Jane379 · 21/07/2026 02:10

TheBlueKoala · 20/07/2026 22:20

Well, that dress is objectively not flattering. To anyone. Ever. The only one to get her feelings potentially hurt is VB but I really don't think she's on MN.

How do you know? The Princess of Wales supposedly is, for one.

Jane379 · 21/07/2026 02:12

RosemaryMintSageThyme · 20/07/2026 22:30

Exactly this! He even removed his podium to show he relates! It’s not consistent. For starters - how representative is VB? Never mind the dress, what’s the message it gives? Disappointing, Ms B could have used her new roleas PM’s wife to promote something more interesting.

Ms B could have used her new roleas PM’s wife to promote something more interesting.'

  • Otoh, why should the PM's spouse feel that pressure just because they're female? Philip May didn't. (Won't mention Liz Truss' husband as that hardly counts!)
Holidaymodeon · 21/07/2026 02:36

BeeBerry · 20/07/2026 19:55

It's fine. It absolutely doesn't deserve your hyperbolic description. She looks perfectly nice in a simple, understated dress. Wildly overreacting to women's clothing is sexist and boring.

Understated at £800+ ? I think people have completely forgotten how and why the Labour Party started. It’s a shocking amount of money to spend on a dress as the wife of the leader of a nation where the regular folk are one step away from financial dire straits and we have millions of people including families, children and vulnerable people in poverty.
i know it’s the norm on mumsnet to post about buying dresses for thousands of pounds each but that dress cost an obscene amount and would be hideous on anybody.
vb should stick with her overpriced unoriginal slip dress nightie themed clothes.

Meckrel · 20/07/2026 23:59

She's not Mrs Burnham. Does a wife have to share her husband's political values?

Well she’s literally being called Mrs Burnham in some newspapers. I don’t care what her political views are, but the fact that Andy Burnham has “not Mrs Burnham” right by him in a ridiculously expensive VB dress is not a good look for him, given his principles. But I expect those principles will apply to us not him anyway as usual.

JoJuniorShabadoo · 21/07/2026 03:49

It doesn't matter what she wears because she doesn't fancy herself as much as he fancies himself

Stopsnowing · 21/07/2026 04:59

It doesn’t fit properly but for me the issue is why is she wearing such an expensive dress (if it is really 850 quid) - even if borrowed or rented it doesn’t seem on
message. I also really hope it wasn’t a freebie.

SummerPeonies2026 · 21/07/2026 05:24

Well it’s not the best of starts!

What does the dress tell us? Fiscal
rules are for other people, not for Burnham whom is happy to spend other people’s money on ill fitting, ugly vanity projects.

What does the cabinet choice tell us? There are no real principles or values in place, as the cabinet contains convicted fraudsters, tax evaders and back stabbers.

Monty36 · 21/07/2026 05:47

Moment I saw it I knew this would happen. People judge her judgement.
Dress was wrong for the day and wrong for her shape. To make matters worse her hair pinned back so harshly aged her by a decade. Style is not her thing.

Myli1 · 21/07/2026 06:06

Goodness me. The man’s only been in office for a day and we’re already bitching about his wife’s dress?? First world problems.

Oh no, not a hairstyle that gasp ages her. She looks fat AND old. How very dare the witch. Doesnt she know she has to look skinny and young so that peoples eyes dont bleed. Let's drown her.

You’re right, she doesn’t need to, but she has a political history herself. I was thinking more along the lines of Michelle Obama, or in this country Cherie Blair or Carrie Johnson. You’re right, those spouses didn’t have hands on involvement, and stepped out of the limelight. And so they should!

Agree with this, but why were his family there at all? I don’t take my husband and kids to work. He’s leading the nation and should be focussed on that.

This is unbelievable. You start your thread of saying you’re no fashion expert. You then go on to prove that by picking dresses that are really dated and with a myriad of style errors, seem to feel markies is the epitome of fashion, whilst slagging off another woman’s dress,

then you feel hurt people agree with you you’re no fashion expert and don’t know how to dress??

if you give it be prepared to take it back. If you posted some tasteful dresses that were current you’d have been ok, people would have thought this woman has taste, but you clearly do not.

What am I reading? His wife is a successful businsss person, she will vastly out earn him,

im no Labour supporter but this thread is bonkers, women thinking it’s the 5os and husbands buy their wives clothes and recommending dresses even your nanna wouldn’t wear.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 21/07/2026 07:06

She looked alright. Not the most flattering but a regular person on the street would get away with it. Because she's in the public eye she's expected to look perfect.
