... does it really have to be called My little pony? I am sorry if that sounds ungrateful but I am worried we might upset people who really want to discuss what to do about Glittery Prancer's lost sequinned comb.

I think 'Mumsnet pony club' would attract the right sort.

thanks advocateofthedevil!

mysterymoniker · 09/01/2009 20:44

oh so much more than pets

I think small domesticated animals can be lumped together quite easily, but horses are a massive topic! mumsnet is now complete

pointydog · 09/01/2009 20:45

horses aren't that far off pets, face it

PoloPlayingMummy · 09/01/2009 20:46

Horses are more a way of life than a pet tbh

cazboldy · 09/01/2009 20:50

and you have a horse pointydog?

unless it's a falabella or a miniature shetland that you just have because it's pretty then they are more than pets!

mysterymoniker · 09/01/2009 20:55

I suppose if you keep your horses at home they might feel more like pets, but I bet lots of us don't live with them unlike other pets. Even if you don't compete and are just a happy hacker (like me, but with a rich fantasy le trec/team chase life) it's a huge part of life.

I love my cats, dog and fish but they are not so all-consuming - financially, mentally and emotionally.

PoloPlayingMummy · 09/01/2009 21:00

DH would have a fit if i brought one into the house and let it snooze by the fire like the dog or cat! Might give it a go and tell him it's a pet

pointydog · 09/01/2009 21:01

hoi. People don't need to have a horse, surely

mysterymoniker · 09/01/2009 21:02

I would love it if I could do that! he wouldn't get through the little doors in my house though

sometimes when I can't sleep I think about driving over to the yard and having a quick snog in his stable

cazboldy · 09/01/2009 21:06

pointydog? "need" to have?

what's that got to do with it?

cazboldy · 09/01/2009 21:08

I keep mine at home, and they are definitely not pets......... the relationship and the bond you have with them is on a completely different level.........

I suppose if you have a working collie, that might come close to the teamwork, and trust, but really......

If you don't understand then don't bother!

Pixel · 09/01/2009 21:08

MysteryMoniker, you might be surprised. We used to keep our horses in a big barn that had a big roll-up door and a little human-sized door next to it. One night the mechanism for the big door got damaged in a storm and the farmer refused to repair it so we always had to use the little door after that (normal house-size). My mum's part-shire went through it quite happily but we had to take his rug off first!

What you need to worry about is how big is your hearthrug?

SwedesInACape · 09/01/2009 21:40

Threadworm - "Actually, I've changed my mind again. I think MN will become a bloated 'all things to all women' with this proliferation of topics." Actually I think the reverse is true. I think Mumsnet is now to big for everybody to join in everything.

OP posts:
Threadworm · 09/01/2009 21:41

But doesn't that make it more nec to retain community as far as possible?

snoringnightmare · 09/01/2009 21:41

Yay a horse thread! Another vote for "The Tack Room".

Have to disagree a bit about horses just being another pet. They take up enormous amounts of time and energy in a way dogs, cats, etc., never do. (And I do have dogs, cats and hens as well btw.)

Have a boring horse related question so off to start a thread.

SwedesInACape · 09/01/2009 21:49

Threadworm - Yes. But a community is made up of lots of little diverse groups. I thoroughly disapprove of the majority always legislating for the minority.

OP posts:
Threadworm · 09/01/2009 21:51

The groups need to overlap and coalesce, though. If they become too numerous and specialised that is less likely to happen. A generalist 'pets' topic is likely to stay on most people's unhidden topics list. But specialised pet areas won't.

Threadworm · 09/01/2009 21:52

It's as if you had 'short stories', 'magic realisam', 'romance' as topics instead of the Adult Fiction topic

SwedesInACape · 09/01/2009 21:53

I personally don't hide topics. I just look at active convos and am terribly swayed by names of most recent posters. Regardless of topic or subject.

Should I ask for a sheep topic?

OP posts:
Threadworm · 09/01/2009 21:54

I think we need a topic topic, for discussing topics

Threadworm · 09/01/2009 21:56

I feel a bit churlish, dissing the horse topic. I'm not anti-horsiness. Did my share of dashing about in jodphurs in my youth.

whitenoise · 09/01/2009 22:06

but whhhhhhyyyyyyy?

OK so horses are different to pets but you still OWN them like you do a dog...why not have an "animal keeper" section and then start threads in there for chickens or horses or dogs or cats or seventeen fish and a budgie

SwedesInACape · 09/01/2009 22:16

Shall we organise a Mumsnet Pony Club Camp? Without the ponies though because I don't have one.

I think all you neighsayers naysayers are being truly rotten. The horsey ladies are really the most diverse group on the whole of mumsnet. And all post frequently elsewhere - they are not one trick ponies.

pointydog · 09/01/2009 22:25

actually I would quite like to join in a little horsey chat from time to time. Just occasionally, because dd1 is a huge fan. But I'm not getting a friendly feel here.
