Are stables entitled to weigh my daughter rather than just take my word for it?

In the context of welfare, height isn't an issue for the horse.

They kind of go hand in hand. A far too tall rider at a show would still be likely be asked to dismount as unsuitable for the pony. If they are way too tall they are highly likely to be too heavy too.

Too heavy and too tall are different issues.

Welfare and showing aesthetics are different issues. Prince Philip Cup has completely different aesthetics regarding long legs.

The focus on this thread should, imo, be that poor little pony's back legs taking off for that fence (we'll ignore her appalling hands for the moment! ) not whether her legs are too long.

I’d actually question whether some of those teenage boys and girls on the little Welsh section b’s in games are within weight ratio and wonder where that will go in future if it’s brought to attention. As it is it’s pretty niche and they are rarely on their backs for long. Generally legs down to the ground as you described isn’t great and not likely to be in weight ratio either so not really a separate issue as such

There are plenty of tall skinny girls and boys and some adults who would cause no welfare issues at all riding small ponies.

tnorfotkcab · 06/05/2026 11:27

the person in the phots isn't a child, she looks like an adult to me

Full disclosure

That is quite horrible to see. Thanks for sharing what we all suspected.

I'm not a physio but used to be an equine vet nurse & did some basic physio training.

That is not a happy pony at all & yes they will jump or gallop until the point they are injured or in pain (racehorses often gallop or jump to their death)

That pony will inevitably end up with irreversible damage to the back & joints.

We’ll need to agree to disagree on that. I wouldn’t let anyone whose feet were nearly touching the floor on my pony and I wouldn’t let my dc or ride myself something where feet nearly touched the floor regardless of weight. Way too wobbly even with the most balanced rider with nowhere to steady the leg and head and shoulders so high

XelaM · 06/05/2026 16:51

I may have been unlucky but unfortunately I have seen way worse than the photos posted 🤦‍♀️ bigger riders on even smaller ponies. It's so awful to watch, but what can you do when it's not your horse (and everyone around appears to condone this)?

Balloonhearts · 07/05/2026 12:47

Seen the photos. That is not OK. She is far too big for him. She is clearly unbalanced as she is hanging on his mouth over the jump, probably because she is too tall and having to jump bareback, which is likely because she can't fit in his saddle and he is clearly just uncomfortable in general. At some point, we outgrow our childhood ponies. She needs to stop riding him.

BeAmberPanda · 04/05/2026 09:46

you wouldnt say that if you saw her riding. PM me.

No of course I won't PM you. If you are so sure just crack on, you don't need my agreement.

bumptybum · 07/05/2026 14:42

Seriously OP. If you’ve regularly Ben at yards then it’s remarkable if you haven’t seen people putting children on that are too big for the Pony

It’s not really for us to do your homework if you want to find out about it going and research it it’s very common

daysofpearlyspencer · 07/05/2026 14:45

Now just seen the photos. That's quite distressing me, that poor pony is struggling. Wish I hadn't seen them.

Ineedanewsofa · 07/05/2026 15:06

I’m a stone lighter than that “child” in the pictures and there is no way I’d ever get on something smaller than 15.2 as I’m 5ft 10. DD is 4 STONE lighter and 5ft 3 and starting to make her 13.3 looks small, I cannot imagine putting her on her bestie’s 12.2! Absolutely appalling behaviour

Balloonhearts · 07/05/2026 21:24

Just to add, I'm 5 stone heavier than her. I don't get on anything less than 16.2 and sturdy. 12 stone and a 12hh pony is absurd.

TalulahJP · 08/05/2026 09:14

this thread has really upset me too. that poor little pony trying its best to do a good job.
so cruel.
i just dont understand why she still thinks it’s ok when loads of us have told her as well as the pony club or riding club person who wanted to weigh the “child” and wouldnt let her ride their tiny pony.

if anyone knows where the pony is and recognises it - not one that similar, that ACTUAL pony) then feel free to phone the rspca (or sspca in scotland but i think they are in england). Or even the police. And show them this thread. They need to know what they are doing is wrong.

this thread has got so toxic. POLICE???

tinyspiny · 09/05/2026 17:21

The police is a bit silly , the RSPCA or world horse welfare would be more appropriate

Neither will do anything. This is so common it's almost normal.

I'm sorry, but you're are deluded because it's your daughter.

The only way she is managing to stay on that pony as he jumps is by hanging onto his mouth. The tension in the bit, the reins, her hands, her shoulders and her face makes it perfectly clear.

For anyone who loves animals and horses in particular, it's a truly horrible photo of an oversized rider holding herself on by the pony's mouth, while his back legs buckle trying to lift her weight off the ground.

You are now laughing at your daughter abusing that pony by riding him when she is too big for him?

You know you're a cunt, you don't give a shit bout animals so clearly this is all falling on deaf ears. I hope you physically feel the way the donkey you put your oversized kid on does

No, you are insane if you think a girl of adult weight should be riding a bloody 12hh pony. You can see her hanging on his mouth, you can see him struggling to push off. She's too big. I work with horses, no way would she be allowed to ride a pony that size. Don't believe me, take them to a show. I guarantee she will be told to dismount and disqualified.

The adult in the photo should know better than to ride that tiny horse.
