My toddler wants to name his new mini Shetland mare 'Kevin' HELP

Collecting our new pony tomorrow. A tiny miniature coloured mare, who currently has no name. She is passported as 'Ponette deux' because she was the second pony to be passported that day, apparently they were all passported that way but with 'trois, quarter, cinq' etc...

So, I asked my dear son what he would like to call her.

Son's response: KEVIIIIN!

I did try to explain that, she was a girl, but I got a death stare in return, and I'm drawing a bit of a blank with names.

I was hoping I might get some ideas here that I can suggest to him. The little mare is the sassiest little thing I've ever met, so something different to match her larger than life attitude and that's fun and quirky enough too.

OR... do we just go ahead and name her Kevin?

Do it! My then three year old son called his guinea pig Ben.....she was a girl as every confused vet who looked at her! Love it.

Kevin is settling in well, she's surprisingly calm considering she never left that little field her whole life.

I've had several interesting conversations with people in the village already, the name has been a hot topic and everyone is taking about it! I've actually had a gentleman double check she was a mare incase I was mistaken. Our little boy is proud as punch, she's quite strong walking out in hand (probably because it's all new to her) but she's been following him around the garden like a little lamb.

Oh, and we think she might be in foal...

If I had a tortoise I'd call it Susan........

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 30/04/2017 19:39

I've always wanted a "scary" dog called fluffy or bunny.

And a fluffy rabbit named Nero, Medusa or Achilles... It might still happen ;) (Maybe we'll get a pet one day...)

Kevin is such a cool name for your gorgeous girl. She's so adorable and pretty!!

Awww. Seriously, your posts have honestly brightened up my evening. This is so adorable! :)

Omg! Itty bitty baby on the way? If she is you HAVE to call the baby Perry Grin

I have been lurking on this thread and I have to say I don't normally like people names for animals but Kevin is an awesome name for her!!

RoseAndRose · 30/04/2017 19:45

"If she is you HAVE to call the baby Perry"

Agree Grin

Kyyria · 30/04/2017 20:03

My 4.6 year old DS insists on calling everything 'Geoff'

QuitMoaning · 30/04/2017 20:11

When will you find out for sure that Kevin will have a baby?

awesomeness · 30/04/2017 20:22

quitmoaning without a doubt.....best comment ever Grin

Well, we have the vet on Tuesday for a general check over and dental work so I'm going to discuss my concerns with her then.

Kevin was a broodmare her whole life, she's ten now and had four foals previously. Her first when she was just 18 months and her last was apparently weaned last June.

We actually asked if she was pregnant when we went to view her, she struck me as pregnant then - my non horsey other half thought the same, and we asked again when we collected her. She has that typical broodmare body, not carrying excess weight anywhere except her belly, which is low and at times is bigger on one side than the other, but the biggest concern at the moment is her udder, it's quite distended, not full, but has fluctuated a bit the last 48 hours more so in the morning when the grass is lush.

So she's either pregnant or there's something hormonal going on. If she's pregnant I doubt scanning is an option at this stage, so I'll have the vet take some bloods, palpitations might shed some light as well. If it's hormonal we can address that as per vets guidance, because she'll be getting uncomfortable with the size of her udder if she isn't in foal.

Lab results for bloods should take a day or two to come through so we should have a better idea by Thursday Smile

Perry will be on the list if she is expecting Grin

Wait, what? Kevin might be PREGNANT?!Shock Well that's an unexpected twist. I like Kyyria's DS's suggestion of Geoff, especially if it's a girl.

LynetteScavo · 30/04/2017 20:49

Kevin is just perfect.

Your toddler is very wise.

User2468 · 30/04/2017 21:01

I already love Kevin!

Orrieonko · 30/04/2017 21:35

We have just bought an 11.2hh pony called Gavin! So Kevin is perfectly sensible!

Badcat666 · 30/04/2017 22:13

Is it weird that I'm overly excited that Kevin might be up the duff??

I really need to get out more....

ABitCrapReally · 30/04/2017 22:26

Isn't Kevin the name for the female bird in the Pixar movie 'UP!'?
Flowers for Kevin's (possible) pregnancy. Maybe you should name the foal egg (in line with the Up/Bird theme) Smile

MoiraRosesMeltdown · 30/04/2017 23:26

Kevin the pony is wonderful. I know a Jack Russell called Dave. However Rodney has me laughing out loud!

SeamusMacDubh · 30/04/2017 23:59

Ahhh I love this thread. I'm shamelessly placemarking so I can find out if Kevin is indeed going to have a baby Perry.

We moved out of the city to a small market town in the countryside 18 months ago and we see loads of horses all the time, it's making me wish we were horsey people!!!

user1243 · 01/05/2017 00:11

Can't wait to find out if she's pregnant.

LemonySippet · 01/05/2017 00:17

Oh this is just awesome, she's gorgeous and utterly suited to Kevin. Hope all goes well with the vet check and that it's nothing too serious if she's not in foal.

Tabithatwins · 01/05/2017 08:26

Kevin is tremendous and noble. My old cat was called Nigel and she didn't give a witch's tit about it!

Libitina · 01/05/2017 09:19

DS (when still a child) named one of his hamsters John.

I hope Kevin settles in well and I really hope we have a baby Perry on the way.

BertrandRussell · 01/05/2017 09:21

My friend has a budgie called Bernard.
