In the absence of staff and her fabulous thread titles and witty openers here is a 67th thread. The broom cupboard is overflowing so time for another Republic. Hopefully we hear from staff soon.

Stolen from thread 66.
'You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.'

Got my pcr and awaiting results. Pretty sure I'm negative as my scratchy throat has gone away, but I still stand by the fact I think it was a good idea to get one on day 8 of contact with my positive pupil.
My HT disagrees. When I told them I was going for the test (not in school time) I was reminded that they are only advisory, as if I was being told it wasn't needed and I didn't have a real cause to get one.

@Mistressiggi

Feeling a bit worried tonight as plans are for masks to go in school after the October break here. Will feel better to not wear one myself! But I've taught loads of pupils recently who have then been off with Covid, I do think the masks have helped.. But you guys have all managed fine without masks haven't you? Blush
At my school we’re back to masks in classrooms @Mistressiggi for 3 year groups. Let’s see if we can make it til half term by reintroducing them!
DanglingMod · 13/10/2021 06:46

I have taught around 35 children since the beginning of term who have tested positive for Covid in the 24-48 hours after me teaching them and not developed it (unless v mild symptoms/asymptomatic/false negative LFDs - quite possible). Yet. No masks obviously, windows open.

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

I'm surprised by money for geography. About 80% of the geography degree course from my uni went off to do teacher training. Nothing else you can do with all those colouring in skills.
Biology?
noblegiraffe · 13/10/2021 11:37

You can definitely do primary if you add in a bit of glitter.

In the mid- 80s, even the HOD Geography at the secondary school I taught in called it Colouring In Across the Curriculum.
borntobequiet · 13/10/2021 14:56

I’m afraid I hated history at school, I think a lot of teenagers do.

I discovered, somewhat to my surprise, that all the really naughty boys I taught who hated Maths really liked History. It got to the point where I used to say “So you hate Maths. I bet you enjoy History” and they would almost always reply yes.

DanglingMod · 13/10/2021 16:56

Yes, almost all students love history. A lot more than English. It's stories, innit?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 13/10/2021 17:42

Positive kids in my class now. J7st in time for me to get it in time to not go to Lisbon next Friday. Typical.

MrsHamlet · 13/10/2021 18:19

Every single one of my y11 has now had it or got it. I'm strangely healthy.

DanglingMod · 13/10/2021 18:26

It's most rife in our 7s. I think most of our 11s had it this time last year!

No sign of a vaccine date for us, yet...

chocolateisavegetable · 13/10/2021 18:38

@DrMadelineMaxwell I have the opposite issue - have been told to lie about my symptoms in order to get a PCR test!

AttaGirrrrl · 13/10/2021 18:58

I hope you stay that way @MrsHamlet

We seem to be coming out of the other side of a large outbreak. Fingers crossed we can hobble to half term and all get a rest.

My smell has come back but wine still tastes odd (devastated!) and I’m absolutely shattered. Otherwise, no major long term effects. I hope!

MrsHamlet · 13/10/2021 19:01

Me too although my holiday plans are buggered anyway!

DollyMixtureLulus · 13/10/2021 19:05

We had our mega outbreak at the start... will let you know this time next week if we get another one after half term Confused

ChloeDecker · 13/10/2021 19:33

You’ll all love this one! Hmm

My school had to contact whoever is the new PHE today, as we now have a class over even the new 25% threshold of positive cases and you know what they came back with?

  1. Teachers to stay at the front of the room when teaching.
  2. Pupils should wipe down their seats and desks after every lesson
  3. Pupils may wish to wear a mask if they choose too
  4. Pupils with symptoms should stay at home and take a PCR test.

That’s it.

That’s frigging it.

That’s in their letter they have told us to send to parents of that class (it’s a KS3 class)

So basically-bugger all.

DanglingMod · 13/10/2021 19:42

Apparently our local PH team can't answer the phone as they're too busy (took 4 days to get through to report 1/3 of a class positive.) They said do nothing. Parents don't even know.

Fenelladepompom · 13/10/2021 19:48

You just have to keep practising, Attagirrrrl.

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 13/10/2021 20:04

The problem in Bristol is the Plymouth lab or new variant. I have told zoe and phe South West they need to look into it. Had a very patronising reply from phe South West. There is no new variant and no issue with pcrs either. Apparently, we are all doing the lfds wrong, either because we are stupid or deliberately falsifying results. Weird how my family were all testing negative on lfds for all those months prior to getting symptoms. Weird how we all had the same virus and I got symptoms last but dh and ds didn't ever have positive pcrs. According to them, I had covid with by 4th pcr being positive but dh and ds never did. Ignorant tossers.

Just going to swig another fruit shoot before finishing my planning. Grin

JanglyBeads · 13/10/2021 20:47

I predict they’ll have o eat at least some of those words before too long Squashed…..

It’s all such a shambles isn’t it.

WhenSheWasBad · 13/10/2021 22:10

Chloe wow 25% of pupils is huge. And yes the Covid measures are basically keeping their fingers crossed and hoping no one gets too ill.

So many kids off sick at my school. Lots of it Covid. Plenty more the other hideous virus and a stomach bug.
If I get a stomach bug I’m not going to be happy.

motherrunner · 14/10/2021 06:09

Not going to bother reading the article but who can actually says this is surprising news?

MsAwesomeDragon · 14/10/2021 06:49

That is entirely predictable mother. Where else do you get large numbers of unvaccinated people mixing freely?

This article - ans reports elsewhere this morning, is both helpful to the current situation and yet not - depends how people interpret it.
