In the absence of staff and her fabulous thread titles and witty openers here is a 67th thread. The broom cupboard is overflowing so time for another Republic. Hopefully we hear from staff soon.

Stolen from thread 66.
'You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.'

Oo just been to BBC Sounds for Radio Northampton’s Breakfast Show as I think our DPH would have been on today…. nada, they haven’t put the show up for listening again yet!

Why? Worried about more searching questions from your truly??? Grin

Information about availability of NPQ funding (all teachers) and increased teacher training bursaries in this article.

However, I gasped at this line:

"However, classics has been removed from the list of eligible subjects for 2022."

Someone, somewhere, finally realised that a massive bursary for classics when they all go off to teach in private schools was a bit of a pisstake.

The DfE have been stalking you on MN again.

What's really interesting is many classics teachers have history degrees. They may have realised this was a loophole that allowed some historians to gain bursaries...pesky history. What use is that to the elite/proletariat?!

TheHoneyBadger · 12/10/2021 16:26

Haha! Sorry already well funded chaps who did latin at university, you can't be fully funded by the gov to train as a teacher only to immediately decamp to the private sector after all.

Very happy about the NPQ funding - had an email from the DfE today telling me that my NPQ would be fully funded after all (after my school made very clear they wouldn't contribute at all towards costs). Good call imo and one of those small things that actually can make a difference to retention when you feel like you're in a dead end job and not really being stretched or appreciated anymore.

TheHoneyBadger · 12/10/2021 16:29

Obviously we're stretched as in crazy workloads that could fill 24hrs a day if we let them but I mean stretched as in growing, feeling challenged and developing and like you're progressing and learning in an area you want to develop in.

Radagast · 12/10/2021 18:14

@JanglyBeads

Have any of them had positive lateral flow tests but negative PCRs, when?
We've had a number of students/staff at school over the past week or so where this has been happening, absolute nightmare.
JanglyBeads · 12/10/2021 18:18

Someone on Parents Utd (may be a teacher) has posted that they’ve been sent this by their school!!!

I've seen a few people asking about thresholds for schools and thought I'd pass on this which I've just received in a message from our secondary school:

“Thresholds - Public Health England are now advising that they do not need to hear from schools unless 25% or more of the school population has tested positive in a ten-day period or within a single outbreak.”

I would discount it but it doesn’t seem like the 10% threshold is being observed, does it?

JanglyBeads · 12/10/2021 18:21

Can’t read whole article but the DT has a story about how “false positive” LFT s among school children have doubled in a week…..

(Not biased or anything!)

noblegiraffe · 12/10/2021 18:21

25% or more of the school population

Well, that addresses all the theories about 10% of what. It wasn't intended to be 10% of a class then.

25% of the whole school coming down with covid and testing positive for it within 10 days....it's like they don't want to be bothered, isn't it?

noblegiraffe · 12/10/2021 18:23

The DfE have been stalking you on MN again.

I've got a whole load of other ideas they can steal if they're reading...!

I notice the Languages bursary includes ancient languages so the Latin teachers can get their bursaries that way. It does seem like they don't want the historians!

JanglyBeads · 12/10/2021 18:28

The DfE are carrying out a QA programme to assess LFTs against PCRs in schools. For some weeks…

So we’re not going to have any answers any time soon then

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/10/2021 18:53

I'm surprised by money for geography. About 80% of the geography degree course from my uni went off to do teacher training. Nothing else you can do with all those colouring in skills.

Bloody Covid fog.

My very clear advice would be that if you have a respiratory infection, stay at home because you’re going to pass it on

I think every teacher in my school has symptoms of a respiratory infection-that’s pretty morning or this time of year, isn’t it Grin

borntobequiet · 12/10/2021 21:10

It does seem like they don't want the historians!

Possibly because, famously and attributed to more than one person

“Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it.”

As to Geography, if a bursary attracts DD into teaching, I’m all for it. She could train in Biology, but doesn’t want to. Says there’s more narrative in Geography, and I agree. If I had my time again, I’d do Geography.

JanglyBeads · 12/10/2021 21:32

What was the BBC report like piggy?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/10/2021 21:49

I did my MSc with an eye on secondary geography teaching. Got sucked into the civil service because I did my thesis about a thing John Prescott was interested in. 13 years later I did primary.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/10/2021 21:51

Look at the heatmap - interesting.

Feeling a bit worried tonight as plans are for masks to go in school after the October break here. Will feel better to not wear one myself! But I've taught loads of pupils recently who have then been off with Covid, I do think the masks have helped.. But you guys have all managed fine without masks haven't you? Blush

Grin I’ve covered a few geography classes. So far zero colouring in. They must save the tricky lessons for cover teachers. I liked geography too. I’m afraid I hated history at school, I think a lot of teenagers do.
