In the absence of staff and her fabulous thread titles and witty openers here is a 67th thread. The broom cupboard is overflowing so time for another Republic. Hopefully we hear from staff soon.

Stolen from thread 66.
'You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.'

Here! Thanks!

DanglingMod · 04/10/2021 06:49

Aw ,that makes me sad nd reminds me that the point of a two week timetable in some schools seems to be to squeeze out the arts Sad.

Thanks for the thread, Herc.

motherrunner · 04/10/2021 06:54

I’m not sure which week I prefer. Week A I have a morning duty and a break duty on same day, Week B I have break duty and lunch duty on same day. Week A I see Yr 11 3x, Week B 5x. I do finish Week B with Yr 10 (my favourite class).

KatherineofGaunt · 04/10/2021 06:54

Thank you for the new thread, @Hercisback. I hope Staff is okay.

I'm just going to settle in at the back here with a large coffee. I applied for a non-teaching job yesterday, which I'm sure I won't get, but it would be a relief to think I may leave teaching at the end of December.

motherrunner · 04/10/2021 06:55

But on a week B I have back to back drama from P3 to end of day. That’s shit.

Hercisback · 04/10/2021 06:57

Good luck KoG. Please say the job is music related!

Checking in. Also applied for a job yesterday!

KatherineofGaunt · 04/10/2021 07:09

Grin No singing involved, @Hercisback, but I can always do that as a hobby!

JanglyBeads · 04/10/2021 07:14

How does a 2 week timetable push out the arts?

LolaSmiles · 04/10/2021 07:27

Thank you for the new thread herc.

Has anyone in our broom cupboard/republic taken a career break? I'm not sure if this year is unusually bad, but I'm temped to take some time away from teaching and have started exploring other options.

borntobequiet · 04/10/2021 07:33

One of the few constants for me on our two week timetable was the double first thing on Monday A and B with one Y10 group hence the feeling they missed so much.
I once got confused as to what week it was and totally forgot I had a Y9 ICT class last period on a Thursday. I spent the lesson planning (chatting) in the staff room with my TA. At about three fifteen, I headed up to the computer room to make sure the machines were off. There was a class in there, working away quietly, but no teacher. “Where’s your teacher?” I asked. “You’re our teacher” a kid replied. “Did you forget about us? We got on much better without you.”

borntobequiet · 04/10/2021 07:36

I'm not sure if this year is unusually bad

I’m totally certain this year (and last) have been extraordinarily bad for teachers in just about every way and am glad I’m no longer in school. I honestly don’t know how you all do it.

DanglingMod · 04/10/2021 08:36

Because you can put music, drama, art on the tt once per fortnight instead of once per week. That's what happens at a friend's school (grammar).

Beachhuts90 · 04/10/2021 08:44

When I worked in the arts it seemed most local schools only had one session per fortnight, as running school visits for secondary schools ran into a lot of scheduling issues.

It was always a lot easier to schedule something with primary schools.

Mistressiggi · 04/10/2021 08:47

Borntobequiet that story is great! Grin
We have the two week timetable but I am preferring having a class for a double once a fortnight than two shorter classes. Mostly.

JanglyBeads · 04/10/2021 09:19

Ah OK I see.

Yes born that story’s very funny!

borntobequiet · 04/10/2021 10:59

that story’s very funny!

The kicker was, they really had done just as well without me. (Probably not better though.) This was because the schemes of work and lesson plans were bombproof as we had so many non-specialists working for us. They just downloaded the PowerPoints and any other resources and got on with it. In this instance they were building websites, which they seemed to manage much better with minimal interference.

CallmeHendricks · 04/10/2021 13:49

That's hilarious (or would be if it weren't so terrible).
5900 cases per 100,000 , increased from 600 at the start of term, but it's nothing to do with schools! They say it matches community spread, and then tell us community spread in the same period has halved.

phlebasconsidered · 04/10/2021 14:16

Still no results for me but if the pcr does come back negative I will argue for another one. My taste and smell have completely gone. I just spent an hour smelling things. I can't smell my dogs paws or garlic paste. Marmite has no taste. It's weird! I just ate siracha sauce- nothing!

phlebasconsidered · 04/10/2021 15:14

And i'm positive. Just got the text.

JanglyBeads · 04/10/2021 15:24

Welcome to the club phleb….

Iamnotthe1 · 04/10/2021 15:52

@DanglingMod

It was worse when I was at school. Music/Art/Drama shared a single weekly slot and you'd only do one per half term. You ended up with roughly 11-14 hours in each per year depending on which terms you got.

Deepti Gurdasani on the horrific figures, but also admitting that she sometimes can’t tell the difference between Boris’s Twitter account and its parody account…..
