You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask. Finally, upload your covid test results twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

We’re a football and family. DH is Irish and extremely patriotic but even he was caught up in it all last night. We let DD stay up. She’s still asleep. The latest I can wake her to get to breakfast club on time is 6.50. Still, history in the making. What’s funny is since she’s been playing for a team - she’s a defender - we get a tactical commentary, and with DH being a PE teacher the sit and discuss performances. DS fell asleep on the sofa before the game began!

Anyone seen the news that pubs can open longer on Sunday?

Might as well give up in the restrictions then and not wait another week as I imagine there's going to be little social distancing then.

HarrietDVane · 08/07/2021 07:04

I missed the pub news but instead woke up to see that Johnson is still blathering on about extending the school day Angry

TheHoneyBadger · 08/07/2021 07:09

Oh mother I never realised that. Hope you haven’t been offended by the pe teacher ribbing!

With any additional funding?!
JanFebAnyMonth · 08/07/2021 07:17

Let’s have a Point Out Good Things about PE Teachers Day. And mother, tell us about the education world from your DH’s POV, will you?

It’ll distract me from the “discussion” on my thread, sigh.....

Hercisback · 08/07/2021 07:18

mother Please tell us about PE from the other side....

You kept that one understandably quiet!

JanFebAnyMonth · 08/07/2021 07:21

I’ll start: the members of our PE Dept all seem lovely, especially the HoD. One (female) is joint Head of Sixth Form, the others “just” teach.

I imagine they can be key in dealing with the Bobs of this world, making positive relationships etc?

Did he blather about paying for it?

Iamnotthe1 · 08/07/2021 07:34

But it's all just waffle. He says extending it is "the right thing to do" but openly states that he doesn't know what that time should be used for. How can you know it's right when you don't even know what it is?

They aren't going to pay for it so nothing significant will happen. At most, it'll be telling schools to stay open so that for-profit organisations can come in and run after school activities/sports. However, even that won't work logistically. There isn't enough physical space in a school for every child to do a club every night.

DH being a PE teacher

Awks.

Was he one of the ones who got annoyed when Joe Wicks was called the nation’s PE teacher? Grin

Timeturnerplease · 08/07/2021 07:50

I’ve never been so pleased that my PPA is a Thursday morning. My class is mainly girls but a straw poll yesterday told me that most of their parents were letting them stay up last night as a special occasion. They’re Year 3 and excitable at the best of times.

HT messaged on WhatsApp this morning saying don’t worry about getting too much done with the kids today, aim for survival instead. And to say good luck with any kind of learning next Monday too…

motherrunner · 08/07/2021 08:13

I think I’ve mentioned it before? Oh, he knows he has it ‘easy’ but I get the following arguments in return:

  1. We have to do fixtures
  2. You will never know the frustration of teaching cross country and the Yr 11 girls saying ‘we’re walking from the start’
  3. We have to do fixtures
  4. Getting students through GCSE and A level who are only there to play football and don’t want to do theory
  5. We have to do fixtures

My sister in law is a PE lecturer at our nearest Uni so I’m surrounded by them!

Did I mention they do fixtures?

Oh no. He loves Joe Wicks and he and the kids took part ever day whilst I was seething in the next room as I taught live from Lockdown Day 1.
motherrunner · 08/07/2021 08:17

The only real moaning from DH is about the DCs provision of PE at primary. The first thing he asks DCs on their PE day is ‘did you do PE or was it cancelled?’.

He would love my school! Massive investment in PE, it’s hardly ever cancelled, even in these days of having to have it outside and they have even bought all the staff a PE top and hoodie (optional) so we lead by example. I was never a huge fan of school PE and sports but we inject a hefty dose of “you are only competing against your own personal best” so the competition element is not the be all and end all. Those who like to compete against others are catered for, but Sportsmanship is heavily emphasised. We get specialist coaches in and pre-Covid we had several after school clubs, subsidised. He might be pleased to know there is a primary that has them outside in all but the most horrendous weather! Grin.
noblegiraffe · 08/07/2021 08:40

Well if he loves Joe Wicks then he is ok with me Grin

motherrunner · 08/07/2021 08:41

@Saucery He would love that! He often has pipe dreams of setting up a as a PE primary consultant. I am often listen to his rants about why kids are turned off sport. He doesn’t like the ‘waiting for your turn’ and trying to explain too many tactics at a young age. He’s like ‘let them run and play games!’. He loves to win but mainly he plays sports - and encourages the DCs to - because it’s fun. I maybe biased as he’s my husband but I think if he had been my PE teacher at school, I would have liked PE.

JanFebAnyMonth · 08/07/2021 08:46

And ours seem to have (?) to give up a fortnight in the summer holidays to do a sports tour to somewhere like Canada....

No idea how that works contractually etc.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2021 09:11

Not sure a free trip to Canada is that much of a trial!

We’ve got parents starting to take their kids out of school as cases are too high and it’s not safe. What about those ghost children eh?

I don't like Joe Wicks or Chris Hemsworth Blush.

I'll be at the opposite end of the table with the pate and gherkins

Staff: next thread title is “The Fall of the Republic”

Don’t like Joe Wicks?! Shock

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/07/2021 09:29

Well I LOVE the football. Last night was officially The Best Night Ever. At my brothers pub, so much fun, we’ve waited forever to get to final. Sorry but IT’S COMING HOME 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🎉🎉🤣

I’m part time so all my classes are split - last few years with lovely people there is really only one dick in my department to share with and guess who I’m mostly sharing with next year?!?! I’ve already planned my christmas exit should I need it….

DreamingofBrie · 08/07/2021 09:31

Noble I find him shouty and terrifying Grin. If you were as unfit as I am, you would understand why!
