You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask. Finally, upload your covid test results twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/07/2021 21:22

Right.
Have you ever sent them the creepy/vampy pic?
Or is that just for us?

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/07/2021 21:23

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2021 21:24

Thread on AIBU Lola! Are you the joyful dancer?

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/07/2021 21:27

@MrsHamlet

I went out with our maths dept once. They were not expecting to play "snog marry shag"
That would cause upset at our maths socials. They are quite a straight-laced bunch in general, although some of us would happily play "about marry shag". I have to time it carefully when I arrive at our nights out, so I end up sitting with the less serious people. I do not want to spend my Christmas night out talking about work!!! One year, when I was "ill" on the Christmas maths social, they went to one colleague's house and several of them stood around in silence for a while as nobody had anything to talk about Hmm

We're still trying to organise a retirement do for someone who actually retired last summer, but we just haven't managed to find a time when we're a) allowed to meet in such a big group (15 of us) and b) everyone is available and not having major life crises (ill health has been the big one this year).

LolaSmiles · 04/07/2021 21:28

I wish I was a joyful dancer. I might have a dance over to AIBU for a read though.

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2021 21:30

they went to one colleague's house and several of them stood around in silence for a while as nobody had anything to talk about

😂 😂 😂 that’s so maths.

I can talk about kids with a lot of my colleagues so that’s not too bad.

MrsHamlet · 04/07/2021 21:32

I have nothing to talk to my own dept about either... it's not just maths.
One colleague was genuinely shocked that I had an opinion on bottoms.

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/07/2021 21:38

Delighted you feel you can be yourself here MrsH!

MrsHamlet · 04/07/2021 21:43

🤣

Piggywaspushed · 04/07/2021 21:49

The email on AIBU is not an English teacher. That has been changed because it was apparently too identifying . Unlike all the other precise details.

I have been known to gie it a laldy and sing like Kate Bush. But as you know, I have an aversion to noisy neighbours.

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2021 21:50

I think we can safely assume it's not a maths teacher.

Piggywaspushed · 04/07/2021 21:52

Dunno why I wrote email there!

Hercisback · 04/07/2021 21:57

I may have to mute Michael Rosen on twitter. How does he have time to retweet so much?

I regularly dance round the lounge alone. No one has made a petition about me yet. That thread is so precise, it's not about me.

eitak22 · 04/07/2021 22:02

As someone hoping to do my ECT in a year time the talk of support etc have been interesting.

This year I worked with an NQT who did a SCITT last year but never planned and was basically a HLTA so this year has been a shock and they're not continuing. When I did my training 8 years ago, there were so many people on the course who should have never made it on the course and some were let in during clearing by phone and it was so obvious that if they had met them they weren't cut out for it. Also find it weird that they have done away with skills tests, I was the cohort that didn't get lots of chance to retake them just 3 but at least it put some emphasis on subject knowledge.

Did notice on some groups I'm on that Paul Dix is a recommended read for PGCE what happens when you're new and children don't respond to you or you don't have time for follow up.

Rule Your school dynamics sound like a nightmare. It's not fair for it to fall on a few adults shoulders to deal with the challenging children.I feel that as a 'strong' LSA ive ended up with a lot of challenging classes and 1:1s because 'I can handle it's. Yes I can but I'm exhausted by it.

LolaSmiles · 04/07/2021 22:04

I like Michael Rosen, but sometimes feel he has to wade into any, and every, topic in education. A lot of education issues at the moment seem to boil down to progs vs trads, with each group thinking they care most about the children.

CallmeHendricks · 04/07/2021 22:13

I remember feeling furious during a joint parent consultation with a job-share partner whose behaviour management was non-existent. The class just used to run riot on her days and were appallingly rude and disrespectful to her, but I had them pretty well sorted on my days. I mentioned to a parent that I had one or two concerns about their child's behaviour and this bloody woman next to me went and said, "Oh, they're fine for me!" Well, yes, because you have low standards and never pull them up on anything!!
So I looked like the one who had discipline problems!!! Angry

Piggywaspushed · 04/07/2021 22:13

I would think that thread was ridiculous beyond belief if it weren't for the fact that some people complained to my school about a young teacher having her boyfriend stay overnight at her own home. And then she got spoken to...

DreamingofBrie · 04/07/2021 22:17

I may have to mute Michael Rosen on twitter. How does he have time to retweet so much?

I feel a bit like that about David Baddiel, but he's very amusing and I guess he got a tour out of the content (it was very amusing).

I did my PGCE 7 years ago. Am sure there are fewer than 1/2 of us left teaching. My university Maths tutor was excellent though, I think 25 out of the 28 of us graduated. Individual school placements were of varying levels of support - I was lucky that I got two great mentors - I've seen other PGCE students get ripped to shreds in the same schools by different mentors and wondering how on earth the feedback they were getting could possibly be construed as constructive?

I know we've moved off food, but how do people feel about pate? I'm clearing out my fridge at the moment so have just had some on crackers.

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2021 22:25

how do people feel about pate?

You know those tiny jars of meat paste that people (my mum) used to put in sandwiches? Undefined meat that tasted weird?

That's how I feel about pate.

DreamingofBrie · 04/07/2021 22:27

See Noble, I think we can still be friends, as long as we eat at opposite ends of the table Grin.

I love Marmite.
