First in tops up the gin supplies and turns on the tea urn.

Thread in AIBU at moment about parents not realising that household members don’t isolate if one is Covid positive. Think the penny is dropping that their child can be taught by a teacher who has family members positive and their child sitting next to someone who has families members positive too.

MrsHamlet · 07/09/2021 06:44

I'm going to anonymously correct the misspelling later, because apparently that's a thing now.

FlagsFiend · 07/09/2021 06:44

I think the numbers are about right for ventilation from my wider reading. Under 800ppm is a sign of good ventilation, over 1500ppm is definitely poor. However our CO2 monitors (science labs) are regularly over this - sometimes they alarm as it goes over 3500ppm which is where the CO2 starts to become a concern in and of itself...

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/09/2021 06:54

We had 7 positives in our in school testing yesterday, mostly year 11, but a couple of year 10. Interestingly, 5 of those 7 have a family member at home who is also positive.

JanglyBeads · 07/09/2021 09:15

Interesting that, MsAD, interesting..... 😠

I’ll try and copy what the techie bods in Parents United were saying, inc links to the SAGE paper.

JanglyBeads · 07/09/2021 09:34

There’s the original paper - long and detailed. It says that in rooms where there’s lots of exhalation (eg singing) you need to keep co2 levels to below 800 ppm. Parents United bod saying all children are shouty therefore everywhere should be below that. Arguable, I guess.

Beachhuts90 · 07/09/2021 09:44

I just stopped teaching and we went into the school library before anyone else nabbed it. Lay around on the floor reading books for an hour.

Sounds like the best kind of day!

TheHoneyBadger · 07/09/2021 10:14

Yes I’d love to be able to have a class lying around reading books for an hour!

I’m going off course this year and spending the first lesson with my year 8s (once all logistics are sorted) with them watching something and filling out a table whilst I have one on one chats with each of them getting to know them and setting up a page for each with any sen, interests, things that help them learn etc that I can also use to keep notes of behaviour, help, progress etc and what works with them.

It was a bollocks intro lesson on the sow anyway and the task I’m doing will consolidate what they were set for RL on Monday and get them thinking about the‘ordinary people’ side of history and themes like class, inequality and poverty.

I can totally justify it to myself and just hope hod doesn’t walk in and complain. Year 8 can be pains and I want to get off to a good start and they will be taking their options this year.

Sounds fab honey!

TheHoneyBadger · 07/09/2021 10:35

Thanks. I will try and find slots to do the same with the other year groups I teach over this half term. I hate how rubbish I was with names and really knowing them last year. I had so many shared groups and we were running between zones and then lockdown.

We’ve been lectured tons through inset and meeting on Monday about the importance of knowing our students so I don’t think they can complain about me making time to allow that.

I love having a class with readers. I will do hot chocolate reading, ice lolly reading, outdoor reading, anything to encourage them!

Tested positive this morning mind you, so that is out. My eyeballs hurt and I can’t smell or taste. One child has now infected two teachers!

JanglyBeads · 07/09/2021 11:32

Oh no Dolly!! Hope you’re OK. 💐

Beachhuts90 · 07/09/2021 11:46

Oh no!! Feel better soon x

TheHoneyBadger · 07/09/2021 12:00

Sorry dolly. Hope you are ok

noblegiraffe · 07/09/2021 12:49

Hope it passes quickly and easily, Dolly. Don’t put yourself out at all for school and focus on looking after yourself (not the usual teacher way).

Doesn’t bode well for England.

MsAwesomeDragon · 07/09/2021 13:13

I hope you stay feeling ok Dolly. Focus on your own health and don't worry about school. Your class will be fine without you for a little while.

noblegiraffe · 07/09/2021 14:20

"Of course the "levy" is also a 1.25% employment tax on all public sector institutions. So essentially an unbudgeted cut to schools of 1% (given around 80% of costs are staffing)."

From twitter. Because what schools need are budget cuts.

Piggywaspushed · 07/09/2021 15:18

Oh no dolly. Hers' hoping you fare better than me!

Hurting eyeballs is a Zoe symptom , commonly noted.

borntobequiet · 07/09/2021 16:06

I can totally justify it to myself and just hope hod doesn’t walk in and complain.

It sounds like a great idea. If HOD complains s/he is an idiot.

phlebasconsidered · 07/09/2021 17:48

3 of my year 6 are positive now. One came back from holiday and infected 2 others while he was out playing with them (hanging around the park with the rest of year 6 and 7) while waiting for his "real" pcr test result.

A total of 4 siblings will be coming in to other year groups regardless. It's farcical.

WhenSheWasBad · 07/09/2021 17:59

So sorry you’ve got it Dolly

I think it’s only a matter of time before most teachers get it.

JanglyBeads · 07/09/2021 18:00

I can’t work our why someone would have their child tested but not bother to isolate them?!

Unless other household members were positive and it was advised, in which case not isolating is completely and utterly fine....

PumpkinPie2016 · 07/09/2021 18:02

We have only had 1 positive in our pre term testing. Was a Y7 which is awful as she has now missed the start of secondary school Sad

One new member of staff hasn't started yet as she is positive but that was before term started.

Doubt it will take long though now the kids are back in 🙄

Today was good - didn't actually teach any lessons but met some Y7s/12s and had a meeting with my RQT which was nice.

Y11 P1 tomorrow so back to it with a bang!

Mistressiggi · 07/09/2021 18:03

Sorry to read that Dolly, do let us know how you are getting on Flowers
