You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement for school staff to let off steam.

Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask. Finally, upload your covid test results twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

My mum is on some chunky meds to get rid of the post AZ headaches. Considering she has the same blood issue I do, which would have meant no AZ once we knew about the clot risk, I guess that they were worried about the headache being sinister.

I had my second Pfizer almost 3 weeks ago and have been ill since - first with stuff I reckon was post vaccine, then awful cold thing. All have featured a massive headache. Weird. Partner had a banging head after AZ for a week too.

Guardian report this evening:

^Prof Ravi Gupta of the University of Cambridge, a co-opted member of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), also raised concerns. “If things go as I think they are going to go, we will likely end up with a third wave. It will be a big wave of infections and there will be deaths and severe illness,” he said.........

Gupta said he was in favour of delaying the planned 21 June relaxation in England until the summer holidays, when the chance of spread within educational settings is reduced.^

Sorry to jump in. I’ve not been on for a while. Bit of a rollercoaster time with both school and home life. My son is Y10 and was already struggling with his MH post lockdown but to make matters worse he was assaulted by a fellow pupil (a bit of a set-up outside of school including someone filming it but not put on SM). We reported it to the police and school. The trouble is he’s still dealing with repercussions of reporting it. The lad who punched him in the face (splitting his lip) has been warned by the police but his cronies are still making comments and sending unpleasant messages on SM. The school are trying to be their best but can’t control the stuff on social media. He is so miserable. Does have a small group of kind friends but a lot of damage has been done.

My dilemma is whether or not to move him to another school for Y11. I’m getting conflicting opinions on this. Some saying do it others saying it could be disastrous. I welcome any opinions from anyone one on here with experience or knowledge of having moved a kid mid GCSE.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 30/05/2021 20:52

@SarahLou67 Sorry to hear that. I can give you a perspective via PM. I don't have a child who has gone through it but limited experience of similar.

CallmeHendricks · 30/05/2021 21:01

That sounds tough, @SarahLou67, both for him (obviously) but also for you as a parent to witness his distress.
Flowers for you

SarahLou67 · 30/05/2021 21:05

Thanks all and yes happy to receive pm on this topic. I’ve come on here as I’m a teacher and enjoy the sanity of the “Staffroom”.

noblegiraffe · 30/05/2021 21:06

That's horrible, Sarah

Do you know if a move into Y11 would even be possible? I don't think we'd take a pupil that late. The latest I know of was Christmas Y10 and that was really difficult to catch up and settle in at the same time.

Can he delete his social media accounts? Give himself a break from the nastiness?

PumpkinPie2016 · 30/05/2021 21:07

Good to hear people are enjoying the start of the half term Smile

I've had a nice weekend Smile yesterday, DS and I walked to the next village to the park and had lunch. Today has been sunny so chilled at home and my parents came to visit.

I did attempt to start the timetable. It's impossible Angry ok, I'm exaggerating but it's very, very difficult. There are periods where we need every man and his dog and then some. Complicated further by the fact that two staff are SLT so only teach 3 periods a week. So, they can't have a full class of anything Sad

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2021 21:29

Pft 3 lessons a week? They might as well not bother.

I’ve been binge watching Before We Die.

Going to take the dog for a walk now to try and burn off some of the beer calories.

Jan needs to write a book about her mother I think. Fascinating.

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/05/2021 21:33

You’re not the first person to tell me that honey.

Yes. We are already about to delete social media accounts and set up new ones. Like you I feel we may need to grit our teeth and get through next year. I don’t even know if another school will accept him and indeed there is the whole exam board compatibility issue.
TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2021 21:52

Very tricky Sarah. Sorry that’s happening. Hopefully things might calm down with the big summer break? I hope so.

It’s still pretty warm out. Gonna be a sticky night I think

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/05/2021 21:55

KI’ve just been out to get my washing in and thought it was freezing honey! And my washing has gone all cold iykwim.

We have occasional admissions to year 11. It's not easy and it might mean dropping a subject but we have done it. My boss does the in-year admissions stuff and I know that we try to make it work in circumstances like those.
Could he move now and finish year 10 somewhere new?

echt · 30/05/2021 22:11

It's 3 degrees here in Melbourne, the temperature, not the girl band.

The first day of remote learning today, and with any luck the snap lockdown will be over and back to school on Thursday.

This won't be happening if the new trend catches on. Can't be arsed to wear mask? Just carry a coffee cup around all the time. Simples.
Absolute wankers.

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2021 22:12

You were cold when we were partly in the shade today then discovered you’d fried your phone when we sat in the direct sun. I think your thermometer is out of whack Jan.

JanFebAnyMonth · 30/05/2021 22:15

Hmm am often colder than other people but not usually hotter.....

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 30/05/2021 22:22

Very cold due to the wind where we are, sea breeze. Heading inland tomorrow in search of warmth.

Chilly here too, froze my tits off getting out of the sea after an hour of messing about in the waves.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 30/05/2021 22:37

Bit of a breeze here. Not much, but enough that plenty of tourists won’t have thought about suncream because it doesn’t feel hot.

borntobequiet · 30/05/2021 22:40

@CallmeHendricks

Didn't we all start planning a get-together on a hill, last year? There was mention of guitars and camp-fires and all sorts.
I live on a hill in a county some people on here seem to like. It feels pretty remote but is only six miles from the motorway. I have a big (ish) garden, room for tents and I have a fire pit. Might that do?
CallmeHendricks · 30/05/2021 22:51

The Lake District?
Do you have neighbours who would object to a bit of Kumbyah?

For 6 weeks? Not sure we could sort things on that timescale. The more I think about it the more I’m thinking he stays put till sixth form .
