You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

@borntobequiet, am interested in yr comments in the Data thread about graphs etc feeling designed to confuse for those with poor maths, tell us more (or PM me if you really think it’s too boring!)

DreamingofBrie · 04/05/2021 10:25

Great news about jabs for you, ds and dh, MonkeyTennis. Lovely to hear from you again.

LolaSmiles · 04/05/2021 10:36

Iamnotthe1 Teaching has definitely driven me to swearing more. You're not alone.

MrsHamlet · 04/05/2021 11:20

Science (and some other subjects) get massive bursaries.

TheHoneyBadger · 04/05/2021 11:48

I'm a lifelong swearer so found it hard when I started teaching to keep it in check and used to do a good ten minutes of swearing like a trooper after school to get it all out of my system.

I'm so bored of marking. I am definitely too slow and put too much into feedback but then that's what makes it worthwhile doing so?? Meh. Only 5 essays to go and I'm procrastinating.

MrsH - thank you - I thought no wonder there are shortages in maths and science if they're making them pay nearly 10k to train. My pgce was free and I got a training grant/salary that worked out at about £600 a month and I was able to negotiate my first contract starting from July 1st so I got paid over summer. Thinking back I couldn't have paid to do it - if I was in a position to afford post grad education I would have done an MPhil.

What the world needs is more classics teachers...

Quick question - dd is starting KS4 and could do with a bit of support with Science. Is it possible to have a "Science" tutor, who could work with her on each of the three subjects, or do tutors tend to only teach one of the sciences? She is not getting on very well with Biology this year, and although she enjoys Physics and Chemistry, could do with more confidence in herself (which I think she could get with 121 support and extra time spent on past papers etc.)

LolaSmiles · 04/05/2021 12:31

MrsHamlet
I wonder which sector those heavily bursaried classics teachers will work in 🤔

TheHoneyBadger · 04/05/2021 13:17

Got through the marking then realised just how much planning and photocopying needs to be done.

I also made the mistake of looking in ds's bedroom and seeing what a state it's in. Having a fml moment. The weather's not helping.

Piggywaspushed · 04/05/2021 14:39

We had one applicant for 3 core subject NQT type jobs...

To be fair, we also couldn't recruit a Latin teacher. But we could recruit for Classical Civilisation.

MrsHamlet · 04/05/2021 14:53

Our law teacher offers Latin as a fun club. She's actually an English teacher.
We're desperate for good physics and maths but we tend to lose physics to the local nuclear industries!!!

borntobequiet · 04/05/2021 14:53

@JanFebAnyMonth I don’t want to bore on on the thread but I’ll PM you!

HobnobbingAboutHobnobs · 04/05/2021 15:42

Toddler won't nap! And she's being a limpet! I foresee a very late night to get my year 11 papers marked. Stupid hobnob, I need to get more organised! 😔

CarrieBlue · 04/05/2021 16:54

@DreamingofBrie - I’ve tutored all 3 sciences before, but it depends on the tutor. I’m confident enough to cover all but some prefer their own specialism only. You’ll likely get Bio/chem or Physics/chem but less likely to find someone happy to tutor bio/phys. Some will only tutor one of them.

Piggywaspushed · 04/05/2021 17:55

So my school has just readvertised the jobs.

Anyone fancy it? Bottom of scale is £2,571,400 rising to £4,160,400 if you are top of scale. Per year obviously.

JanFebAnyMonth · 04/05/2021 18:00

Er would they consider someone who’s not taught properly for nearly 30 years and has a primary qual piggy?!

Piggywaspushed · 04/05/2021 18:03

Possibly. Maybe a few Russian oligarchs.

MrsHamlet · 04/05/2021 18:05

Input needed. I'm applying for a job out of the classroom, in teacher education.
I need two referees, one of whom must obviously be my HT.
Do I put my current line manager who knows me well in my school role (which includes teacher Ed) or my former colleague who has a very niche role but is likely to be known by the people involved and worked with me in teacher Ed?

TheHoneyBadger · 04/05/2021 18:07

Even I'd work full time for that salary!

My ankle support/strapping thing has arrived and it feels good to have it compressed and elevated. Will wear it tomorrow to work as it's a long day with a fair bit of moving and it definitely got set back last time I had that kind of day.

My planning is a bit half arsed for a couple of lessons tomorrow but I'm really running out of steam and have assessments coming in dribs and drabs and constant marking. Obviously nothing compared to those of you with exam groups - sorry - but still sapping my energy and time for planning.

Week 4 of a 7 week term here and good to know we're over half way and that bank holiday was a bit of a god send.

ArnottsUnderpass · 04/05/2021 18:07

I've got the joy of a MAT "deep dive" this week. As the non specialist, guess who's lesson they're gonna come and see??! Bloody good job I'm up to date marking them. Tomorrow I'll prep.

Much as I love them, I cannot wait to get some time back after Yr11 and 13 go!!

13luckyblackcats · 04/05/2021 18:12

My instinct is the second option (former colleague) @MrsHamlet.

HerdyGerdy · 04/05/2021 18:16

@MrsHamlet

I'd go for the former colleague unless you have the option to add in an additional reference (was an option on one of my recent applications). Sounds like it would work more to your advantage.

ArnottsUnderpass · 04/05/2021 18:40

Yes I would go with relevant contact too for the reference

eitak22 · 04/05/2021 18:40
@eitak22 you know there’s (ehem) a few more threads than just one?
Yeah I realised it was same person once I read it. Have read a few of the previous threads.
