You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

Had to laugh: a school friend is involved in her kids' school PTA and has just posted a photo of the cakes and Prosecco that they had delivered to their school on Friday. And there were chairs!

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 14/02/2021 00:49

Chairs! Shock

Will no one think of the children?! Shock

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/02/2021 00:55

Chairs! The horror! People might sit on them.

Then where will we be?

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 14/02/2021 01:18

Worse -tjeu might drape them with fabric... And ...tie bows.
EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 14/02/2021 01:19

They... I swear my eyesight is getting worse!

This might put a dampener on opening if the government really have started learning how to deal with things.

Where are ghosts and detectorists please?

I'm nearly out of Deutschland on more 4.

My body clock has gone. After my epic Friday night/half of Saturday sleep I fell asleep for a few hours Saturday night and then woke up at 1am. Confused if it's night or day so had a coffee which felt wrong so poured a glass of wine Confused

Have confused the dog by taking him for a walk at 2 am and ds who hasn't slept yet seemed annoyed at me being around in his awake shift as he's gone nocturnal again.

I need to find where it's been proclaimed we're not allowed chairs. My school was doing the masking tape on chairs you're not allowed to sit on but have gone all the way and removed the taped ones now.

The detectorists is an absolutely delightful (I'm not usually one for such a word but it really is ) prog on 4. It's about 2 blokes (one of whom is the dude from the Office ) who do metal detecting and are constantly hoping to find a massive haul of stuff. It doesn't sound like it would be good from that, honestly, but it is. It's just really chilled out (and soporific as well - perfect for relaxing ). I can't really say much more because that's literally all its about, there's just something about the vibe/ atmosphere about it... Just give it a try!
TheHoneyBadger · 14/02/2021 05:41

You were up at strange time too then. Hope you're ok.

I'll give it a go thank you.

Saucery · 14/02/2021 07:26

Our chairs were removed back in March! Food is brought in and shared (cakes Etc, not whole buffets) which I don’t think is advisable, but then again I don’t have takeaways or treats from cafes or anything like that.
What other people do is up to them. No one has called me an excessively cautious loon to my face yet Grin
Anecdata suggests the key risk for getting Covid at my school is having a child of school age in the household, anyway.

OpheliasCrayon · 14/02/2021 07:41

@thehoneybadger yes I've been up most the night annoyingly. Not watched anything either.

There's been a woman shouting most the night (and day to be fair ) but I did laugh when I heard a HCA say to the bloke in the room next door to me at about 5.30 "no John, you can't have a bottle of cider, it's a hospital"

The whole chairs thing has made me laugh as well to be honest because a couple of months ago I banned chairs in my classroom! Unless the children were actually sitting on them, they are now kept in a locked room, because several of my students are using them as a means of escape constantly. So I literally don't even have chairs

GuyFawkesDay · 14/02/2021 08:03

iPlayer for ghosts and detectorists @thehoneybadger . Detectorists has been on Netflix too.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 14/02/2021 08:05

I loved detectorists so will give Ghosts a try. We've been enjoying Upstart Crow on iplayer too.

If anyone enjoys a graphic novel www.amazon.co.uk/Flake-Matthew-Dooley/dp/1787330583?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 this is similar humour to detectorists.

From a parent's perspective I will be glad to have my children taught again - they haven't had any live or recorded lessons whatsoever since the week before the Christmas hols. However I don't think reopening without mitigations or vaccinations can work so we may well spend the summer in lockdown.

Why has no fucker got any sense?!

Why has no fucker got any sense?!

This is what I'm worried about.

Schools open.... And then have to shut again. It seems endless and at this point im not sure which is worse, them being just ...shut, or the constant not knowing what the hell is going on.

I mean even in SEN we are open but the guidance is constantly changing and I don't feel like I ever quite know what will happen from one week to the next.

I just think when they open they have to open and stay open but ...I don't know what would need to happen to actually achieve this!

OpheliasCrayon · 14/02/2021 08:32

I'm trying to choose some books for my 5.5 year old. She's a super good reader (she can read dirty bertie, the worst witch, flat Stanley etc)... She taught herself honestly this was NOT my doing! .. but I'm a bit stuck because whilst she can read the words she obviously doesn't always get the meaning behind things because she's 5 so doesn't have the life experience yet that the books are writing about. (especially since most of her school career this far has been homeschool!!).

I've found some lovely looking Sophie Kinsella ones called "Mummy Fairy and Me' which I think she will like (I've read samples on amazon), and I'm thinking about getting her a "horrible geography" set as she likes fact books. I think it's easier to understand as facts are facts they don't need a back story.

I've seen "Daisy and the Trouble" collection but I'm not quite sure about them - has anyone any idea? I've read samples but I'm undecided.

I'm steering clear of J.Wilson as the context is definitely too much.

Has anyone got any suggestions for me? I'm thinking asking a group of teacher / parents I should hopefully get somewhere!!

Ps. We don't buy Roald Dahl. We're Jewish and whilst I do think the stories are great, he was a nazi and so it's not something we feel we can buy.

Thank you

TheHoneyBadger · 14/02/2021 08:34

I guess it was worth an ask. Tellingly I didn't even think about a drink when I was in hospital so I must've been in a bad way. Though the morphine drip probably helped Wink Hope you can get home soon.

I thought I was going to get back to sleep a while ago but it didn't happen.

TheHoneyBadger · 14/02/2021 08:35

The how to train a dragon series is good.

namechangedyetagain · 14/02/2021 08:43

Did post a message up last night but then asked to have it taken down as a bit outing and unprofessional.

Anyhow, on reading the application pack that job is only for experienced teachers so back to plan A.

Some others already have posts, or have been promised them. I'm getting a little stressed about the whole thing if I'm honest.

Yeah I guess at 5.30am it's worth asking for anything. I don't drink either. Or eat. IV all the way & morphine. It sucks though I hate it, my DH made mac and cheese for my kids yesterday and I'm absolutely fixated on being able to eat that. As I can't drink water though it's unlikely.

Yeah I have long since given in on sleep.

Will check out how to train a dragon - I think she'd like that!

OytheBumbler · 14/02/2021 08:53

She might like the Dick King Smith 'Sophie' stories. My DD loved those at a similar age.

Also Enid Blyton's 'Faraway Tree'.

JanFebAnyMonth · 14/02/2021 09:04

Okaaay, so all the Sundaies (?) are full of 'All pupils back on Mar 8th plus picnicking in the park' .....

I guess there's still a week for some more actual science to come to light... or scientists to be listened to, indeed.

namechangedyetagain · 14/02/2021 09:07

Wasn't there supposed to be a big announcement tomorrow about schools? That would two weeks notice (if we don't count half term, cos you know, lazy teachers do bugger all over holidays)

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 14/02/2021 09:07

Kitty and tge Moonlight Rescue by Paula Harrison - a series, small girl fantasy stuff.
Princess in Black - a series, small girl fantasy stuff.
