You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

The papers seem to be gunning for getting those lazy teachers to work through their summer holidays which they clearly think is the solution to everything but ‘might meet some union resistance

The government can fuck off and then fuck right off again if they think I am working during my holiday. I have drawn literally no lines over the last year, just done as told - even when that meant bringing my then 18 month old with me to do KW care over holidays last year because we couldn’t afford extra nursery days. This summer I will be enjoying some actual stress free time with my child, hopefully in our new garden.

And the government can fuck off again, just if that part was unclear.

CallmeAngelina · 29/01/2021 08:58

Even if, EVEN IF the Government paid us, I would point blank refuse to do this.
But they won't, so it won't happen.

TrashedWarrior · 29/01/2021 09:08

Heads won't do summer. They're on their knees. Many leaving.

TrashedWarrior · 29/01/2021 09:09

Also, parents will be taking their kids for holidays left right and centre.

It will be a mess.

Appuskidu · 29/01/2021 09:10

No-I agree. They won’t pay us our normal teacher rates and I think our TAs largely won’t want to.

I would imagine they’ll want to pay their mates who run tutoring agencies so anyone actually doing it will get £22 an hour before tax. My head will probably have a breakdown if another holiday is lost.

I’m planning on taking a tent and disappearing for 6 weeks into a forest, I think. I might not even tell DH and the kids where I’m going! The DfE will never find me.

I bet there will be oodles of posters saying that their holiday has been ‘postponed’ due to covid though, so teachers should lose theirs. Think I shall ignore.

thecatfromjapan · 29/01/2021 09:12

I can't get worked up about summer working.

We've been here before - I seem to remember lots of huffing and puffing about an army of tutors for the most left-behind, to be delivered last Summer, and then to be delivered in school.

Well, we all saw how that went.

It would require massive, massive amounts of planning (identifying locations, ensuring they're cleaned regularly, ensuring there are staff there to monitor access to locations, identifying and monitoring attendance by children, ensuring provision of resources, feeding the children attending ... that's before we get to the question of who will teach what and how you actually pay them) and the one thing we know about this government is that they don't do serious, hard-core planning, delivered through the state. They like to privatise anything like that, for a start.

So, although I probably would be interested ... it's not going to happen - or if it does, it will happen in a way that is so shambolic/dodgy, no-one with any sense (or a DBS they want to take care of) will go anywhere near it. 🤷‍♀️

thecatfromjapan · 29/01/2021 09:14

Appuskidu
Totally agree.
And I think you're spot on that this is going to turn into another nightmare for Heads.

I really wonder about the toll this last year has taken on Heads.

thecatfromjapan · 29/01/2021 09:16

You know, I really am bad at camping. Just bad at it.
But the idea of disappearing into a forest with a tent is just incredibly appealing ...

RigaBalsam · 29/01/2021 09:17

My oh school does summer school every year anyway. Think they get about £600 a week. Quite a few do it for the week. Doubt they would do it unpaid. I never bothered when I worked there.

noblegiraffe · 29/01/2021 09:18

The teacher tapp stress graph showed how insanely stressful it has been for heads. Every stupid announcement causes a massive spike.

I mean, when the guidance is released we come here and slate it, they have to actually implement it.

noblegiraffe · 29/01/2021 09:21

Parents don’t want The Great Summer Catch-Up.

They want a summer where their kids can go to the beach and visit their nan.

I know that’s what I want.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 29/01/2021 09:26

I'm not going to spend 1 second considering the thought of summer school - apart from this 1 second. Kids are also tired - they haven't stopped learning/fighting with their parents about learning etc, they need the break too. Also I've booked a Eurotunnel ticket for the day after we break up (gamble).

Registration period this morning really fucked me off - kids interrupting left right and centre, ended up finishing early because I was so fed up of them. It's the same ones who shout out all the time in class. Raaah.

RigaBalsam · 29/01/2021 09:26

That's what I want too. I want socialising and fun not Newton's laws. On second thoughts....
TheHoneyBadger · 29/01/2021 09:27

I'm going to Sinai for 5 whole weeks. If they want to give me an additional £600 pw to teach remotely from the beach I'll consider a week or two Wink

Cracklefraggle · 29/01/2021 09:31

Working over summer? Haha ha ... NO!

Monkeytennis97 · 29/01/2021 09:33

Hi all :) have become a bit of a hermit so I'm going to go out for a walk today (my first time out since Boxing Day), I really need to get out. Have a good day all!

Monkeytennis97 · 29/01/2021 09:34

That's two more 'no's' from here too about summer working

Monkeytennis97 · 29/01/2021 09:35

Noes...

EnemyOfEducationNo1 · 29/01/2021 09:44

I wouldn't mind doing 1-2 weeks on the same conditions as the DfE . You know, usual pay plus £1000

thecatfromjapan · 29/01/2021 09:45

I love your common-sense, noble. I do wonder if it's one of your super-powers.

I think you've identified the major flaw in this scheme.

Even larger than recruiting people to teach.

The children.

I think you're right. Who would attend? The most educationally vulnerable are often vulnerable precisely because their engagement with school is difficult at the best of times. The majority of children (and families) are going to be exhausted and in real need of a break come Summer ...

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 29/01/2021 09:48

I've just made the error of going out into the health branch again. There are people celebrating the EU not having as many vaccines as the UK. What the fuck has this year done to us all? I'm sure people weren't this stupid and mean before. Maybe they were, it was just well hidden and not cheerled by the media. It's embarrassing.

TrashedWarrior · 29/01/2021 09:48

Dejavu obvs, as we said before, run summer camps with sports, arts etc and young people desperately seeking jobs so kids can reconnect and have fun.

It's all there logistically as so many companies have been running these things for years and are desperate for the money.

Ds did two weeks of a local sports one late august last year and absolutely loved it after not being in school since Easter.

I managed to tidy and get prepped for going back to work.

Appuskidu · 29/01/2021 09:48

Oh, now then-I might do it for normal pay plus £1000 a week, yes. I’d delay my tent trip for that.

I don’t actually own a tent. Or trainers. But I don’t see that as a huge barrier to my summer plans!

MrsHamlet · 29/01/2021 10:25

I don't camp. I made an exception for Alaska, and I yurted in Kyrgyzstan... but I'll camp on a roundabout before I do summer school.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/01/2021 10:56

I love camping. I was in Brownies and guides, and still run Brownies. I love going away camping, with a lovely campfire toasting marshmallows in the evening. Unfortunately, dh doesn't like camping, so it's only ever dd2 and me that go now, and she's too puny to help me put up the tent. I'm trying to buy one I can put up single handedly but that's big enough to maneuver to get changed and stuff inside.

I definitely won't be working over the summer. That's not my job. I'm relaxing, and enjoying my time with dd2 before she grows up and decides she hates spending time with me. I'm hoping we can get a family holiday with my parents and my sister's family.

We've got a dog arriving for the weekend tonight 😃 Dd2 is so excited it's unreal. We really want a dog but it just doesn't seem like the right time to try and get one.
